Per ESPN. I definitely had him pegged for a 4 year player. Shows how much I know I guess.

Hope he enjoys the NBDL burnout in 4 years. Really should've stayed, he is still tiny.

Coach Cal can't afford to keep guys around 4 years. He needs 7 open schollys every year for all his 1 and dones

He is oversigned and has to push players out. Bad move on Ulis's part. He will be in the d league next year. He is projected as a mid second round pick.

All the folks suggesting he will fail and will burn and/or never rise above the D league are simply playing the role of a jilted lover with anger and jealously that had lingered since he picked Kentucky, as if he made a bad decision in not going to Iowa. It's laughable and sad at the same time

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, no reason for your reply. Just state your opinion on why you think he won't be a failure.

I think he goes in the early second round. This draft is really, really weak so that may be as high as he will ever get drafted. Other point guards projected around late first/early second are Monte Morris, Melo Trimble (if he declares), Malik Newman, and Gary Payton II. He's better than Trimble and Newman. I'd take Morris and Payton over him. They're both bigger and better shooters. Ulis doesn't look as athletic as Isaiah Thomas to me. He's an excellent ball handler, passer, and decision maker. He has zero problems breaking down the defense and finding the open man. That should have some play in the NBA. He'll get abused on defense. He's little and lean, not a good combination for defending at that level.

Not really. Any time you aren't a guaranteed first rounder it is not a smart decision to leave early. No guaranteed contract. The difference between him and someone like Isaiah Thomas or Nate Robinson is athleticism and scoring. He isn't a good shooter and he needs to be at that size to make it in today's NBA. He will get abused on the defensive end. He probably weighs about 150-155. Can you see him playing against Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Kyrie Irving etc? I can't. At least not next year. He could improve to the point where he makes a roster but that is yet to be seen. I would say the same about all underclassman leaving early to be a second round pick...it isn't a good decision.

I also think it's funny Cal is trying to prop this up like it's some amazing achievement that he is a projected mid second round pick.

Are you serious?

He's projected second round. Most second rounders don't make it long. So there's that bit of common sense.

Secondly he's tiny, not just short but skinny and not a great athlete. How many players do you see at that size in the NBA?

Very few, and the ones you do see are either amazing athletes like Nate Robinson and Isaiah Thomas or fantastic shooters, JJ Berea. And none are that skinny.

The odds are very heavily in favor of a short to nonexistent NBA stint.

A. He did make a bad decision in not going to Iowa...come on now. That one was obvious, and quite frankly I'm disappointed you set yourself up for that so easily.

B. This is explains why he chose Kentucky over Iowa. He'd never jump to the NBA in year two at Iowa. In fact, some of our fans would pessimistically argue that Ulis would be hamstrung on the bench because of Gesell and Clemmons.

C. I'm sure he'll be the next John Wall in the pros.

that is my opinion. Additionally, I can't help but think many of the posters/replies in this thread are incredibly biased and still upset that Ulis didn't come here, so they almost root for him to fail.

Ulis has incredible quickness and ball handling skills and can get to the lane against just about anyone at the college level. Plus the kid is hungry and confident. If memory serves correctly, a lot of folks on this very board, perhaps some of the same posters in this thread, that said Ulis would ride the pine for four years at Kentucky and would continually get recruited over and ultimately regret his decision for not going to Iowa. How did that work out?

I thought he was 4 year type also. Thought he would fizzle out and maybe transfer to Iowa. He just turned out to be a lot better than his initial ranking indicated. He is quick. I remember combes the ILLINI poster saying he wasn't quick and not being impressed. Give Fran credit for good eye, but I don't give Fran credit for not being to find a secondary target.
