My God, what a time to be a fan of that program. They fire their underwhelming coach mid season. They hire a guy ten days ago who got them on the list for many transfers. And that coach leaves today.

Assuming their incoming freshmen stay with their commitment, they currently have 5 scholarship players.

I don't know if there was anything going on in the background at UNLV and I get that Tech might have been this guy's dream job but I have very little respect for someone who would jump ship a week after getting hired. I know he can do it contractually but this just bugs me.

Where did he go?

UNLV underachieved with all the talent they brought in the past couple of years. Rashad Vaughn was a 5-star PG out of MInnesota in 2014. 5-star SF Dawyne Morgan and 4-star Center Goodluck Okonoboh were also in that class IIRC. In 2015 they added 4-star combo guard Eric Davis. All these players had offer lists a mile long. Basically nothing to show for it.

Texas Tech......WOW!!!!! You notice that Tubby got out of there as fast he could. UNLV is a lot better/easier job and place to live than TT, imo.

Vaughn got injured or they would have had a nice season. Eric Davis went to Texas. Their coach did suck though.

New coach Going to Tech to be near his children is a move I make 100 times out of 100.

Yeah, Tubby didn't strike me as a Lubbock, Texas sort of guy. Just used it as a stepping stone as fast as he could.

Most coaches would do the same.

I don't care what the circumstances are, if you leave one job to take another one after a only a few days of work, you are a gigantic toolbag.
Disagree. I think this is all about timing (from what I know about the timelines), and each case such as this should be judged separately based on the circumstances, IMO. Assuming this Beard fella has an ounce of integrity in his body (which I like to believe MOST people have), I don't doubt that he feels awful about how it all unfolded.

It sure sucks for UNLV (which many probably believe is a better job - not sure about the money portion), but this is the USA, where people are allowed to make choices, even very difficult ones that effect many people. If I'm a UNLV fan and I think Mr. Beard is a great hire, I am without a doubt pissed that he is leaving in such a short amount of time without ever Coaching a game. But if he did it for what I believe are the "right reasons", then I would have to understand and begrudgingly let him go.

He's from Texas, his kids live in Texas, and he's getting about double the $ from Tech as he was getting from UNLV. I'd've done it.

I was living in Vegas when UNLV won 1990 NCAA Championship. The next year they went back to the championship game with an undefeated team and totally blew it with a loss to Duke. Later that spring the Las Vegas Review Journal ran a story with a picture of two star players sitting in a hot tub with a notorious gambler and point fixer. That was the beginning of the end for the Rebels and they have never been the same since.

I don't care about the timelines. I get that people sign 6 year contracts and jump in year 2 or 3. I just think if you look someone in the eye and take their job you should be on it for at least a year and not jump out for something less than two weeks later. I think that is a selfish attitude and not responsible at all. He made his decision when he accepted the job and a stand up guy would stand by his decision. I am sure he would be incensed if Calapari became available and interested and Tech fired him to hire Calapari.

It is selfish. And one thing I've learned in life, if YOU don't take care of #1, ain't nobody else gonna step in and volunteer to do so on your behalf.........................

If we're going to pick on the UNLV coach for switching so fast, we should remember that Alford signed a ten year contract and less than (what, a week?) he was taking off for UCLA. So bash one, bash the other.......

...and I'm all for it. I'll even contribute some clubs. :)

He apparently didn't care about being near his children for the last several years, but now that it just so happens to coincide with his professional ambitions, it's suddenly a big deal.

He, and you, are hypocritical toolbags.
