That or UC San Diego coach. Dont think they will go the Utah State coach route again but another one to watch. Also Richard Pitino at New Mexico might be in play also.Russell Turner from UC Irvine is my guess. Craig Smith had great success at Utah State. He'll be a good hire elsewhere.
That seems to be the general rule of thumb. Some programs aren’t even that patient. No NCAA Tourney in four years or sweet 16 in 7-8 years generally signals the end of tenure. Iowa’s patience with Fran has been utterly ridiculous. This coach is in his 4th year without making the tourny. That is 4 strikes and you're out these days.
Also attendance isn’t great. Theyre kind of in an Iowa situation. Utah St has a great bball environment, as does BYU, plus trying to now compete in the Big 12.That seems to be the general rule of thumb. Some programs aren’t even that patient. No NCAA Tourney in four years or sweet 16 in 7-8 years generally signals the end of tenure. Iowa’s patience with Fran has been utterly ridiculous.
Wait. And you can fire a coach who has family associated with the program, too? How did I miss this Congressional legislation?
And Iona.BYU, Utah, Utah State . . . who cares?
Iowa, Idaho, Ohio . . . what's the difference?![]()
Pardon me if I dont feel terrible for Craig Smith and his family. The guy is getting 5 million dollars to be fired and will probably land a lucrative assistant job for a few years. It's not like he and his family are being thrown to the streets here, I think they'll be fine.
Not for sympathy. Just showing the human side of things. I think Craig will be fine and his kids understand the profession. They are both involved with it.
