BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team wrapped up its west-coast road trip in style, rolling to a dominant 36-0 win against CSU Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 8). The Wolverines, who improved to 5-0 in duals this season, earned three bonus wins and earned their first shutout win in five seasons.
Jack Medley kicked off the dual with a 10-4 decision against Richard Castro-Sandoval at 125 pounds. He scored four takedowns, including two in the first period, and rode for 2:10 for his second win of the weekend.
The Wolverines earned back-to-back ranked wins from Dylan Ragusin and Cole Mattin at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively. Ragusin, ranked fifth nationally, secured a 7-3 decision over 19th-ranked Chance Rich -- his second win over the Roadrunner wrestler this season -- with three takedowns, including a slick second-period ankle, and a third-period rideout en route to 3:06 in time advantage. Mattin, ranked 20th, defeated 28th-ranked Angelo Martinoni, 4-1, on a first-period single leg and third-period reversal.
Chance Lamer, ranked 20th at 149 pounds, earned bonus points with a 12-3 major decision against Josh Brown to stay unbeaten in dual competition on the season. Cameron Amine, ranked sixth at 165 pounds, was dominant out of the intermission break, rolling to a 19-1 technical fall over Braden Smelser. Amine scored on three takedowns and three four-point turns -- a bow and arrow and two leg turks to end the bout in 4:14.
Max Maylor earned an 8-4 decision over Albert Urias at 174 pounds -- after an exhibition win at Cal Poly on Friday -- with takedowns in the first and third and a second-period reversal; he earned 2:03 in riding time. Matt Finesilver, ranked ninth at 184 pounds, shook off a deep cheek laceration to beat Jacob Hansen, 7-1, with a single-leg takedown in the second, two back points out of a third-period scramble and 2:42 in riding time.
Brendin Yatooma preserved the shutout with a last-second takedown to defeat Mateo Morales, 8-3, at 197 pounds. Trailing by one late after a Morales duck under for a third-period takedown, Yatooma shot deep on a double leg in the final 10 seconds, lifted the Roadrunner high and returned him to his back for four additional back points.
Mason Parris, ranked second at heavyweight, closed out the dual with a first-period pin against Jake Andrews in the final bout. He scored three takedowns and two back points before ending the bout with an arm bar at 2:23. It was Parris' second pin this weekend and eighth of the season. He improved to 15-0 this season.

AMES, Iowa – No. 4 Iowa State (9-2, 2-0 Big 12) held on to defeat No. 3 Arizona State (2-2, 0-0 Pac-12), 19-15, in a top-5 wrestling matchup Sunday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.

This was the first top-5 dual matchup in Hilton Coliseum since 2009 and ISU's third win over a top-three opponent in the last 14 seasons.

Both teams won five matches each, with the Cyclones winning the first five beginning at 157 pounds and the Sun Devils claiming the final five. Bonus point victories for ISU at 165, 174 and 197 was the difference.

Jason Kraisser got the Cyclones rolling in the opening match at 157 pounds. Kraisser took down Max Wilner and finished the first period out on top. He countered a Wilner shot for a takedown in the closing seconds of period two enroute to a 7-0 victory.

Bonus points are huge in top-5 dual, and No. 3 David Carr chipped in with a dominating technical fall victory (17-2, 5:35) over Tony Negron at 165. Carr had five takedowns and tallied nearfall points on two occasions to remain unbeaten (12-0).

Julien Broderson padded the Cyclone lead to 12-0 with a 17-5 major decision over Josh Nummer in the 174-pound matchup. Broderson had six takedowns.

No. 4 Marcus Coleman won a 7-2 match at 184 pounds over Anthony Montalvo. Coleman was clinging to a 4-2 lead in the third period but got a takedown with 16 seconds left to seal the victory.

Yonger Bastida battled back from an 8-6 deficit to win 23-11 over Jonathan Fagen at 197 pounds. Bastida got caught on his back in the first period, but was able to get a reversal before falling down early. The third-ranked Bastida took over from there, registering six takedowns and a 2-point nearfall in the final two periods.

Sixth-ranked Cohlton Schultz got the Sun Devlis on the board with a hard fought 3-2 win against Sam Schuyler at 285 and Richard Figueroa beat Caleb Fuessley at 125 pounds, 7-5, to cut the Cyclone lead to 19-6 with three matches left.

Casey Swiderski lost a tight match at 141 pounds to Jesse Vasquez, falling 8-6 in the first sudden victory period. Swiderski fought back after falling behind. A takedown with :24 seconds left in regulation gave Swiderski a 6-5 lead, but the freshman was called for locking hands with three seconds remaining to send the match to an extra period, where Vasquez got the takedown for the win.

The marquee matchup was at 149 pounds, where No. 3 Paniro Johnson was pitted against No. 6 Kyle Parco. Johnson had two second-period takedowns to forge a lead, but Parco secured a takedown at the last second of the period to move ahead, 5-4. The match went into sudden victory, where Parco got the takedown for a 7-5 win.

PITTSBURGH—The Backyard Brawl proved to be just that in Sunday's Pitt-West Virginia wrestling match, with several contests coming down to crazy scrambles and last-second decisions.

Unfortunately for the No. 21 Panthers, the Mountaineers (6-1) won the majority of those crucial moments and emerged from Fitzgerald Field House with a 24-11 dual victory.

Winning bouts for the Panthers were No. 7 Micky Phillippi at 133 pounds with a major decision over WVU's Davin Rhoads, Luca Augustine at 174 pounds with a nice win over Brody Conley and No. 2 Nino Bonaccorsi at 197 pounds with a typically dominant performance against Brian Finnerty.

Close defeats defined the dual. The Panthers (5-2) fell in tight bouts at 125 pounds, 141, 157 and lost key scrambles that determined outcomes at 165 and 184 pounds.

"Disappointed with losing so many matches that were decided in the third period," Pitt head coach Keith Gavin said afterwards. "Give credit to West Virginia; they wrestled tough. But we need to work on some things and come back strong next time out."

PITTSBURGH, Pa. –The West Virginia University wrestling team used an 18-4 run to cruise past No. 21 Pitt by a score of 24-11 inside the Fitzgerald Field House on Sunday afternoon.

"It's big for our program when you are wrestling a ranked opponent," fifth year head coach Tim Flynn said following the victory. "Forget that it's Pitt, it's a big win. You have a top-25 team, so I don't care how you get it done, it's a big win for us."

This marks West Virginia's first win over Pitt since the 2018 season, as well as the first over a ranked opponent since 2021 against then-No. 17 ranked Northern Colorado.

Coach Flynn also recorded his 250th career win.

The Mountaineers (6-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after fifth-year senior Killian Cardinale, ranked No. 7 at 125 pounds, held on for a 5-3 decision over Pitt's Colton Camacho.

Cardinale scored the first takedown at the 1:17 mark of the first period and took a 2-1 lead into the second. He added an escape to go up by two before Comacho attempted a takedown but did not complete the move as time expired. The Bristow, Virginia, native added another takedown in the third and kept Comacho at bay to conclude the first bout of the day.

After Pitt (5-2) took a one-point lead by earning a major decision at 133 pounds, redshirt freshman Jordan Titus secured a late takedown to upset No. 2 Cole Matthews at 141 pounds, putting the Mountaineers back in front by two.

No. 24 Sam Hillegas followed up by outlasting Pitt's Tyler Badgett at 149 pounds. After battling through a takedown attempt by Badgett early in overtime, Hillegas secured the much-needed takedown with four seconds remaining to earn a 2-0 sudden victory and increase WVU's lead to 9-4.

Redshirt senior Alex Hornfeck added a 3-1 decision at 157 pounds to push West Virginia's led to seven (12-4) at the halfway point of the dual, while No. 8 Peyton Hall caught Holden Heller in a cradle and sealed the pin in the opening minute of the second period at 165 pounds.

Up next, WVU continues its road trip for another non-conference dual against the Chattanooga Mocs inside the Maclellan Gym on Friday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. ET.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oklahoma State wrestling team moved to 5-1 on the season as it pulled together four consecutive wins to close out the dual and defeat Oregon State, 20-12, inside Gill Coliseum on Sunday.

"We looked maybe a little lethargic in some of those early matches, just not ready to go punch someone," head coach John Smith said. "Losing at 165, 174, 184 and 197, that wasn't ideal, but I was pleased with Konner Doucet. I was pleased with our Trevor Mastrogiovanni and I was pleased that Daton Fix hammered out the team victory by extending the score to a major decision to put us up by five going into the last match. Carter Young with the win was a nice separation to close it out."

Trailing 12-7 heading into the final four bouts, Doucet turned the momentum in favor of the Cowboys with a 3-2 decision over J.J. Nixon. Doucet's victory ended a run of victories by the Beavers spanning from 165 pounds to 197 pounds.

When the lineup turned over to 125 pounds, Mastrogiovanni scored the only takedown of the match in a 3-2 decision over No. 12 Brandon Kaylor to put OSU up in the team score for good. Fix followed up with a 12-4 major decision over No. 18 Jason Shaner as the second-ranked Cowboy moved to 11-0 on the season. Young sealed the dual for good with a 6-2 decision over No. 23 Cleveland Belton.

With the dual starting at 149 pounds, the Pokes got on the board first behind a 10-2 major decision courtesy of Victor Voinovich. It was the second bonus-point win of the season for Voinovich after earning a major decision at the Southern Scuffle as well. At 157 pounds, Kaden Gfeller moved to 9-3 on the season with a 10-9 decision over Isaiah Crosby.

After the Cowboys went up 7-0, the Beavers responded by winning decisions at 165, 174, 184 and 197, which included No. 4 Dustin Plott suffering his first loss of the season to No. 29 Aaron Olmos at 174 pounds.

Oklahoma State will head to New York City next weekend for a dual with Columbia on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 12 p.m. CT.

Pucino’s Pin Catapults Illini to First B1G Win

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois wrestling team won their home opening Big Ten dual against Wisconsin on Sunday, Jan. 8. Sophomore Danny Pucino secured the fall over Wisconsin's Felix Lettini at 5:40 to give the Illini the six points the secured the victory.

"Today was a great day for our program," said head coach Mike Poeta. "The last three weeks I can't tell you enough how proud I am of our guys. We've been on a roll. We've been climbing, fighting and wrestling hard. The guys are doing exactly what we asked for. I can't say enough good things about Danny Pucino and Zac Braunagel. Zac has put together some of the best wrestling he's ever had. Dylan Connell is starting to get on a roll. Lucas Byrd is still Lucas Byrd. When he walks out there, I'm confident he can beat anybody in the country. Today was a fun day for Illinois wrestling."

Today's meet started at 157 lbs. compared to the usual 125 lb starts. It looked bleak early for Illinois when they dropped the first two matches and trailed 8-0. Redshirt sophomore Edmond Ruth set off a spark for the Illini when he won his 20th straight match. He decisioned Josh Otto (Wisconsin) 4-1.

Illinois went on to win the next two matches to take the lead 9-8. Redshirt freshman Dylan Connell defeated Wisconsin's Tyler Dow. Redshirt junior Zac Braunagel won his rematch against Braxton Amos by decision 4-3. Zac faced Braxton at Midlands just a week ago in the finals and defeated him in the second tie breaker round 2-1.

Redshirt sophomore Lucas Byrd continues to bring consistent winning to the Illini when they need him most. He took care of business against Wisconsin's Taylor LaMont via decision 5-1 to keep the Illini alive in the dual 12-14.

Danny Pucino undoubtedly answered the call when the lights were the brightest. Knowing he couldn't lose he went out and put on an absolute show. Securing multiple takedowns of Lettini racking up points. He had a four point near fall which secured the major decision for him, but that wasn't enough. He wanted the pin and got it at 5:40. The Illini needed that as those six points won the dual and gave them their first Big Ten win.

A MN fan on another thread said that Eggum didn't want to win that way so he FF 125 and that McKee weighed in and warmed up . I have never heard of anything like that before. A coach saying I don't want to win the dual that way so you FF 125 as well.
They have at least 2 125 pounders, so it does seem strange to me. Although, they would have lost the dual 18-17 if he had taken the forfeit. Weird to say the least.

Eggum said today McKee didn’t make weight. They didn’t bring another 125 on the trip because Spratley hurt at Scuffle.

It was speculation on my part given the fact that McKee weighed in and traveled. Truth is we really don’t know. There aren’t a lot of reasonable explanations.
I thought the announcer mentioned during MN vs NE that Mckee didn't make weight.
