UNIVERSITY PARK, Penn. – The Army West Point wrestling team fought hard in its first dual of the 2021 season, but ultimately dropped a 32-7 result at the hands of No. 2 Penn State while competing at the Rec Hall on Thursday night.

For the Black Knights (0-1), the action was highlighted by both Corey Shie and Markus Hartman, who picked up key victories for the team at 141 lbs. and 157 lbs., respectively. Additionally, of Army's losses, three were by margins of just four points or less against some of the nation's top-ranked competition.

The first two bouts of the night went in favor of the Nittany Lions (3-0), as the home team grabbed wins at both 125 and 133 lbs. Ryan Chauvin narrowly dropped an 8-4 result in the match-opener before Dominic Carone suffered a loss via technical fall (6:36) while taking on the reigning national champion.

Down 8-0, the Cadets got a big response from Corey Shie at 141 as he opened up the first period with a 2-0 advantage. Though Penn State's Brandon Meredith rode out the second period and responded early in the third, Shie was able to dig out a 5-2 decision to trim the lead in the team scores down to 8-3.

Following Shie's thrilling victory, one of the most highly-anticipated clashes of the night took place as No. 20 P.J. Ogunsanya took on No. 27 Beau Bartlett at 149. After battling through a scoreless first period, the duo traded points in the second and third to force the bout into overtime at 1-1. In sudden victory, the reigning EIWA champion dropped a 3-1 decision to allow Penn State to re-extend its overall edge to 11-3.

Once again, the Black Knights were able to respond to the Nittany Lions' push as Hartman posted a win at 157. Though there was no score at the end of the first period, he went on to grab a dominant, 9-0 major decision to bring the visiting team within four points of the lead at 11-7.

The four-point deficit was the closest that Army ever got, as Penn State was able to hold on down the stretch to claim its third win of the 2021 season and its 33rd all-time over the Cadets.

Coach's Corner
"We scheduled this dual because we want to challenge ourselves and see what we can do against one of the top ranked teams in the country. We learned a lot about ourselves tonight and what we can become capable of. Some of those scores got out of hand but that gal doesn't have to be that big. Hopefully this teaches our guys the level they need to train at everyday if they want to be the best in the country." - Head Coach Kevin Ward

Cadets' Corner
"Gritty, tough and focused are some of the the words that would describe my performance. Getting a win in the final seconds of the match felt good in the moment and will boost my confidence in my abilities heading into next week against Iowa State." - Corey Shie

"It felt good to take a match back against Penn State, and although the team score didn't necessarily look good on paper, I'm proud of our team's fight." - Markus Hartman

NEWARK, N.J. — Making a statement on the road, No. 15 Wisconsin earned two key dual-match victories on Saturday at the Garden State Grapple held at the Prudential Center in New Jersey.

Despite seven head-turning lead changes, the Badgers (4-0 overall, 0-0 Big Ten) defeated North Carolina in the final heavyweight match, 20-16, before cruising to a dominating 38-12 victory against Hofstra.

"What a great event! We love coming to New Jersey to wrestle," said Wisconsin head coach Chris Bono. "There were some great things today, but in the same breathe, we have a lot to work on. I'm proud of the effort."

Wisconsin senior heavyweight and fifth-ranked Trent Hillger led Wisconsin with two pins in his matches, including the dual-winner against the Tar Heels after the Badgers were down 16-14 with Hillger's bout still to go. He pinned UNC's Brandon Whitman in 4:08 and then picked up his second victory by fall in 6:56 against Hofstra's No. 20 Zach Knighton Ward.

At 125, Eric Barnett earned a 11-0 major decision against North Carolina's Spencer Moore. Then followed that up with a pin of Hofstra's Dylan Acevedo in 3:34.

Impressing the crowd, true freshman Dean Hamiti continues to surprise opponents. Wrestling at 165, No. 26 Hamiti improved to 4-0 this season with a 10-0 major decision over UNC senior Sonny Santiago to give the Badgers' one of their critical leads against the Tar Heels. He later used two takedowns and four near falls to earn a 16-0 tech fall in two periods against Hofstra's Ricky Stamm.

Wisconsin saw several other wrestlers pick up satisfying victories against the Pride in the second match of the night. Ethan Rotondo (133) pinned Hofstra's Jacob Moon in 6:02 and true freshman Joseph Zargo (141) followed that up with a 22-8 major decision over Hofstra's Justin Hoyle.

Ranked 19th in the country at 149, Austin Gomez earned a 9-4 upset decision against UNC's 16th-ranked Zack Sherman before turning around an hour later to tech fall Hofstra's Mike Leandroup 16-1 in just 1:38.

Andrew McNally also picked up a pin for the Badgers, earning a fall in 3:18 against the Pride's Corey Langer.

A year after going 0-4 in a pandemic-affected season, the Rutgers University wrestling team surged to 8-0 on Saturday with a pair of victories at the Prudential Center in Newark as part of the Garden State Grapple.

The No. 15 Scarlet Knights downed an under-manned No. 14 North Carolina, 28-9, and Hofstra, 35-6.

Rutgers has road duals against American and Army before heading to the Midlands Championship leading into the Big Ten schedule. There’s a good chance it will be 10-0 when the new year begins.

John Poznanski, who clinched the match with a pin at 184, said he is appreciating winning after going 0-4 as a team in his true freshman year.

“I was never on a winning team too much in high school,” said Poznanski, an All-American in March. “To be 8-0, it’s a great start for the team and great for me as well. This brought an arena feeling like NCAAs.”

The North Carolina match was expected to be much tighter but several ranked wrestlers did not compete for the Tar Heels, who also fell to Wisconsin, 20-16, earlier in the day.

No. 10 133-pounder Jaime Hernandez, No. 10 141-pounder Kizhan Clarke, No. 16 149-pounder Zach Sherman and No. 23 184-pounder Max Shaw were among the Tar Heels wrestlers who didn’t take the mat against the Scarlet Knights.

“I thought they would wrestle all those starters, but they have so much depth, they do such a tremendous job of recruiting, I’m sure they’re still figuring out their lineup,” said Rutgers coach Scott Goodale. “I wanted 49 really bad for (senior) Mikey (VanBrill). He put in a long week of work for that match, but the kid he beat (Mason Phillips) was No. 1 coming out of high school. The Sherman match we didn’t get, but that’s part of the sport. You wrestle who is front of you.”

• KANNIARD LIGHTS UP THE ROCK: Rutgers 157-pounder Rob Kanniard scored the first takedown and the last takedown in his matchup against North Carolina national champion Austin O’Connor, but ultimately fell 12-6.

His late points saved a major decision and his match - despite the defeat - got the biggest rise out of the crowd.

• GOOD STARTING POINT: The Garden State Grapple, which in addition to duals including Rutgers, Hofstra, Wisconsin and North Carolina also included the Garden State Scrap - high school and younger matches on an adjacent mat - was held in the Prudential Center for the first time.

Goodale said he’d like to see the event grow.

“This was a big deal for us, it’s our state, it’s our venue, it’s not Jersey Mike’s Arena,” said Goodale. “But we love the matchups, love the venue and keep wanting to make it bigger and better.”

• BEING CAUTIOUS: Sophomore All-American 174-pounder Jackson Turley remained out with an injury. Freshman Connor O’Neill took his place and went 1-1.

“We’re going to wait until we’re absolutely ready,” said Goodale. “January and February are pretty big deals. You might not see him until then, maybe Army, but we’ll see.”

• STAYING UNDEFEATED: Poznanski improved to 8-0 with a decision over nationally-ranked Hofstra 184-pounder Charles Small and match-clinching pin against North Carolina.

“Definjtely grown on top, definitely on my feet in the hand fight,” said Poznanski. “I want to be on the top of the podium in March. Every day I try to do something better to attain that goal.”
