TRENTON - The Rider University wrestling team only won one match out of 10 against No. 1 Penn State in Friday’s match at the Cure Insurance Arena in Trenton.

But boy, was it a big one.

Sixth-year senior 197-pounder Ethan Laird took down national champion Max Dean in overtime for a 3-1 win in what became a 37-3 Penn State victory.

“He was ready,” said Rider coach John Hangey. “He has all the intangibles. The thing he does the best is make in-match adjustments better than anybody I’ve ever coached. That’s not something you can teach. That’s something that’s internal. I don’t know what else I can say about Ethan Laird. He’s an awesome kid.”

Laird fought off three near takedowns by Dean during the match, including in the final seconds of the third period with the Broncs calling for a technical violation for Dean pulling Laird’s singlet. The review didn’t go Laird’s way, but it did give him a chance to rest and plot.

Shortly after the start of the sudden-death overtime period, Laird slipped behind Dean and brought him down to the mat. Dean slipped out of the hold quickly, but the two fingers went up from ref Gary Wade and the call stood after another review.

“You know what I’m going to say, it’s all practice for March,” said Laird. “I might see him in the national finals, semis, quarters. Now I know what he has, I’ve felt it and I know I can beat him.

“I went to an eye-level shot I go to when a guy has really good defense. I slipped him, got behind him and got the mat return.”

On the defense that gave him a chance to win, Laird said “That’s my thing. You can get to the hips. Good luck getting through them.”

There was a best-case scenario for the Rider from a team standpoint. There was also a worst-case scenario.

What happened pretty much resembled the latter until Laird took the mat.

The absolute best-case scenario for the Broncs was to win six of the 10 bouts - which still might not have been enough to win the dual.

A more likely scenario was to pick off two or three close wins and remain competitive in a handful more, and while the Broncs were in many of the matches until the third period they couldn’t finish the job in most of the bouts. In addition, they lost Jake Silverstein in the first few seconds of the 157-pound match with a shoulder injury that resembled the one that cost him his entire season a year ago.

Last year’s 45-0 drubbing against Penn State was expected as Rider was decimated by injury, but it hoped for a better score with a more complete and healthy team in front of a crowd of 3,229. It didn’t look like the result was going to be different until Laird took the mat.

“My favorite match in the six years I’ve been here, for a small school like Rider to put on a match like this in an atmosphere like this was awesome,” said Laird. “A lot of guys fought hard. That’s the No. 1 team in the country.”

Penn State’s Gary Steen opened the match at 125 with a 6-4 win over Tyler Klinsky, fighting off a late takedown attempt. Two weights later, Rider freshman McKenzie Bell (141) held a 4-2 lead with a minute left against seventh-ranked Beau Bartlett and seemed primed for another upset - he defeated No. 11 Parker Filius of Purdue earlier in the year - but Bartlett reversed Bell to his back for a stunning fall at 6:08.

In the next match - a toss-up between Rider’s Quinn Kinner and Penn State’s Shayne Van Ness- the Penn State freshman and former Blair standout scored four points to take an early lead. Kinner fought back to 6-5, but Van Ness closed out the match with an 11-6 victory.

Rider’s Hunter Mays was close to an opening takedown in his 165-pound match against Alex Facundo, but he couldn’t convert and the rest of the match went the Nittany Lions’ way, 13-4.

“We wrestled well at 25 and 41, everybody else let the wrestling come to them and that was frustrating,” said Hangey. “McKenzie wrestled on his butt, which you can’t do. He put himself in position to win the match, and he made a fundamental mistake. He pushed the pace, he should have won.”

Two other Penn State national champions Roman Bravo-Young (133) and Carter Starocci (174) both picked up bonus points, while their fourth national champion, 184-pounder Aaron Brooks, did not compete.

NEXT: Rider is off until competing in the Southern Scuffle Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tn. Penn State will face Lehigh on Sunday.

keckeisen's style is exactly what i want to see in black and gold up and down the lineup. pressure, physicality, but not just in the handfight. he knows how scramble and finish from every position and therefore has no fear. high attack rate + efficiency = what the iowa style should be.

Nebraska is putting together a solid run. My boy Hardy at 141 is in the finals. Decision over Rayn in the semi's. tOSU is looking pretty ordinary.

Well, he got to wrestle more than a minute in the finals...
You are truly one of the most smug and miserable posters I've ever seen here. Nothing meaningful ever comes out of your posts, so I suppose you are true to your word. How are you talking smack about some bum from Cornell beating some other bum from another school on an Iowa wrestling board?

Get back on your yacht and go visit Greece or something, stop rolling around with the pigs.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois wrestling team split their home opener between Chattanooga and #17 Pittsburgh on Saturday, Dec. 3 at the State Farm Center. Illinois defeated Chattanooga 32-9 in the first dual, but lost to #17 Pittsburgh 6-30 in the second.

UTC NOTES

Sophomore Maximo Renteria gave the orange and blue the best possible start to the home opener when he pinned Logan Ashton in 5:40. The Illini followed that up with two more wins in the following matches, including a pin from sophomore Danny Pucino over Dayne Dalrymple (4:00). Redshirt junior Danny Braunagel recorded a technical fall over Jackson Hurst at the 6:04 mark, 22-7.

Redshirt freshman Dylan Connell undoubtedly had the thriller of the Chattanooga dual. Knotted up 1-1, Connell trailed in ride time and would lose if time expired. He did not crack under the pressure; Connell registered the winning takedown over Matthew Waddell with 10 seconds left to win 3-1.

PITT NOTES

Danny Braunagel gutted out a hard-earned win over Holden Heller. Braunagel trailed 4-1 early in the bout, but fought back to eventually push the match to overtime. In the OT period Braunagel seemed to have the match won early via a takedown. However, a challenge from Pitt overturned the call. He later would leave no doubt and successfully recorded the takedown on Heller to secure the win 9-7.

Redshirt sophomore and newcomer Edmond Ruth continues to make and impact for the Illini squad. He defeated Luca Augustine in the first overtime period 3-1.

Top-Ranked Nittany Lion Wrestlers Take Care of Lehigh 24-12 For Another Road Dual Victory

Van Ness’ pin at 149 sparks Penn State to impressive win in Bethlehem

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The top-ranked Penn State wrestling team (3-0, 0-0 B1G) took care of homestanding Lehigh (3-3) 24-12 for a non-conference road win in Bethlehem, Pa. Redshirt freshman Shayne Van Ness sparked Penn State with a pin at 149 and Greg Kerkvliet finished off the dual with a technical fall at 285.

Redshirt freshman Gary Steen fought No. 26 Carter Bailey tough for seven minutes but dropped a 3-1 decision in the dual's opening bout. True freshman Karl Shindledecker made his Penn State dual debut at 133 and battled No. 19 Connor McGonagle but dropped a 6-1 decision, giving Lehigh an early 6-0 lead in the dual meet.

Junior Beau Bartlett, ranked No. 9 at 141, tallied takedowns in each period as he put Penn State on the board with a strong 8-4 win over Malyke Hines. His win cut LU's lead to 6-3. Redshirt freshman Shayne Van Ness, ranked No. 20 at 149, gave Penn State the lead by picking up a first period pin over No. 26 Manzona Bryant IV. Van Ness turned a low shot into a cradle and a pin at the 2:28 mark to give PSU a 9-6 lead. Junior Terrell Barraclough, ranked No. 30 at 157, battled No. 8 Josh Humphreys and kept the bout close with a full second period rideout. But the Mountain Hawk was able to work his way to a 6-3 win and the dual was tied 9-9 at halftime.

Redshirt freshman Alex Facundo, ranked No. 17 at 165, controlled NCAA qualifier Brian Meyer for seven minutes, using two takedowns, an escape and riding time to notch a 6-2 win and give Penn State a 12-9 lead in the dual. Junior Carter Starocci, ranked No. 1 at 174, then put on a takedown clinic against Lehigh's Jake Logan. Starocci rolled up ten takedowns, including seven in the third period, on his way to a 22-8 major decision.

Senior Aaron Brooks, ranked No. 1 at 184, took care of No. 22 Tate Samuelson, using two three takedowns, an escape and a stall point to roll to an 8-3 win and put Penn State up 19-9 with two bouts to wrestle. Senior Max Dean, ranked No. 1 at 197, had a first period lead over No. 9 Michael Beard when two stall calls put the Hawk back into the bout and forced Dean into catch-up mode. Dean was unable to battle back and dropped a tough 11-9 decision. Junior Greg Kerkvliet, ranked No. 2 at 285, dominated No. 22 Nathan Taylor and used four near falls (three fours and a two), to post the 18-0 technical fall at the 4:01 mark.

Penn State posted a 22-12 takedown advantage in the dual. The Nittany Lions picked up six bonus points off a pin (Van Ness), a tech fall (Kerkvliet) and a major (Starocci).

Penn State is now 3-0 on the year while Lehigh falls to 3-3. Penn State then returns home to Rec Hall on Sunday, Dec. 11, for a 2 p.m. match-up with Oregon State (in an ESPNU national telecast).

Minnesota Uses First-Half Surge to Knock Off No. 5 Cowboys

STILLWATER, Okla. - For the first time since 2014, the University of Minnesota wrestling program has defeated Oklahoma State after marching into the historic Gallagher-Iba Arena to knock off the No. 5 Cowboys, 19-13.

Starting at 165 pounds for Sunday's contest, the story of the dual was the front half of the lineup as the Maroon and Gold used four upset victories to take a 12-3 lead at the half, including two wins from Gophers who bumped up a weight class.

"We're always going to need guys that are going to have to battle, but those early wins were key for us to be able to build that momentum initially," Eggum said. "We're really proud of the guys and the effort they put forth. This is a great program down here, so that was a big win."

The dual kicked off at 165 pounds, where Andrew Sparks defeated Wyatt Sheets by a score of 5-4, using a first-period flurry in which he scored two takedowns to help lead him towards the upset victory.

After Bailee O'Reilly fell to Dustin Plott by a 10-5 decision, Isaiah Salazar got the Gophers back on track with an impressive 4-0 decision over Travis Wittlake. Salazar set the tone in the second-period with a suffocating ride to keep the match scoreless after two. Following a quick escape, the junior would clinch the upset with a decisive third-period takedown.

Michial Foy would make his return to 197 pounds by taking on a ranked Luke Surber. Foy also had a dominant ride in the second period of his bout, and prevailed from a crazy third period after getting the winning escape as well as a takedown in the closing moments to secure the win.

Garrett Joles would then continue the trend for Minnesota by also bumping up to heavyweight for his first contest at 285 pounds since 2020, where he knocked off No. 16 Konnor Doucet. After being knotted at 1-1 after the first overtime period, Joles earned his escape with seven seconds left in the second half of tiebreakers after riding out Doucet in the first half to help Minnesota earn their fourth upset in the first five matches.

"[Foy and Joles] have been in these positions before. Foy wrestled 197 last year and Garrett's a big guy for his weight, so we knew we were capable of making that adjustment," said Coach Eggum. "We felt like both guys were strong enough to give up a little weight and still go out and battle, and they did that."

Patrick McKee kept the "U" rolling by winning the rubber match against Trevor Mastrogiovanni after splitting matches with him last year. McKee was the controlling wrestler for the entirety of the contest earned the opening takedown and three minutes of riding time in the contest, with the only point he conceded in the bout being a rare technical violation for a supposed headgear pull from the top position.

After dropping decisions at both 133 at 141 pounds, Michael Blockhus was again put in a position to close out a dual for Minnesota, where he defeated Victor Voinovich by 3-1 decision. Blockhus earned the only takedown in the bout with an inside single in the second period which proved to be the difference.

"If you look back at this and see some of the guys who lost for us today, on paper you would say we wouldn't have an opportunity to win this dual," Eggum said. "To see these other guys step up and get big wins like they did, that's what good teams do and we've been really proud of the guys and the work they've put in."

The win for the Gophers breaks a six-match losing streak against Oklahoma State dating back to 2014, and is the first win for the Maroon & Gold inside Gallagher-Iba Arena since 2013.

The Gophers now move to 4-0 on the year, giving them their best start to a season since the 2014-15 campaign. The loss gives Oklahoma State their first defeat of the season to drop their record to 3-1.

Minnesota has one more road trip ahead of them before the holiday break, as they travel to Fargo, N.D., to take on North Dakota State on Friday, Dec. 9, before heading out west to compete in a triangular meet with Cal Poly and Lindenwood in San Luis Obispo, California.

Especially surprising considering both Bergeland and B. Lee lost.
This^. I’m not surprised that we beat them, I’m surprised by how we did it. Eggum did a great job recognizing potential matchups and navigating our mess of a 197/HWT situation to get us in a favorable position. To win that dual without two of our best wrestling well at all is a complement to the coaches imo.
