A name discussed here a few times "Raider Lofthouse"- loses at 157.

Also, was is it "MSU158" who was our connection to MSU wrestling?

Ouch

They might give KJ an extension.

They forfeited 197 because Harrington broke a dudes jaw and is facing assault charges. Downey isn't eligible until 2nd semester and will be at 184.

Looks like Tom Minkel is going out with a Tom Minkel kind of season.

Downey isn't even in school yet, let alone on the team. No guarantee he ever actually does either one.

And even then, though he would be an upgrade from what they have, he's not an AA caliber wrestler at this point in time.

That Thorn is going to be a good one. Most people have said he is the best of the Thorn brothers.

Interesting that a Zilverberg bucked the trend and went to SDSU instead of MN.
Great minds think alike! Ha! First thing I thought when I saw that.

Why am I surprised that Brett Pfarr is ranked so high at 197 and beating some of these other ranked kids?

Downey is in school. And I think he is AA talent/caliber.

He's not listed in the ISU phone book. But I'm open to the idea I might be wrong on that.

His results against D-1 opponents so far do not yet say AA.

I'm not sure if Downey is enrolled in ISU yet or not but I do remember him saying that he wouldn't be eligible until 2nd semester. I believe he said he had to finish his AA this semester to be eligible next.

Your kidding right? He most certainly is capable of being an aa or nc. Did you see his results yesterday? You are correct though he does need to become eligible first which is no guarantee.

And his folkstyle results are at 197. He's going 184. He best Tyrell Todd and Tyler Caldwell yesterday. I think they were pretty good d1 wrestlers.

What folk style tournament did he wrestle in yesterday?

He's capable. Won't argue that.

He's capable but the results have always been much better in freestyle. I certainly think he could AA, but would be quite shocked if he wins a national title. Gabe Dean is better than both of those guys

I don't like to dwell on things, but Gross would have been tough for us.

I'm just going to assume that you think freestyle and folkstyle results Arnt the same. Would brooks have better results at 197 or 184?

Freestyle and folk style results aren't the same. Why would anyone think that freestyle and folkstyle results are the same?

Moot point, but why do you say that?

He strikes me as a mild improvement over Ryan and Carton.
I was thinking he handled Ryan pretty good last year. It may have been close, just can't remember. Call me crazy but not sold on our 141 recruits or current athletes. I know there is a lot of hype around Turk and I hope he is the answer. I just felt Gross was our most viable option and thought he would thrive at Iowa.

Gross leaving was a good thing in my opinion. He actually lost a match the Ryan last year. He was a big time recruit so I'm sure he was getting quite a bit of money. I don't think he'll ever have the same results in college as he did in hs. Not a whole lot of offense but good on the mat and a great scrambler. I would compare him to jeva if I had too.

As far as freestyle results compared to folkstyle, I think they absolutely matter. A win is a win and wrestling is wrestling. It's funny you posted this when you did because my friend who is a d1 coach called me a bit ago and I told him what you posted. He wanted me to tell you that all d1 coaches would disagree with you.

I just called my friend who is a D1 coach who says your wrong. I don't know about what exactly and neither does he but he says you're wrong. So there.

He hammered Ryan not too long after that loss I wouldn't really go so far as to compare him to jeva either

I watched Gross wrestle at the Daktronics Open at SDSU last weekend and wasn't all that impressed. Thorn dominated him in the finals. The score was closer than the match. Thorn looked tough. Much more physical than Gross.

I think SDSU is a good place for Gross though and hope the best for him.

Iowa State displayed zero offense the entire match. I think they had 2 tds total
But, but...ah, never mind. If I wasn't so lazy, I'd head over to CycloneFanatic and read the excuses. I can pretty much guess how it goes... "We're young, don't judge us now, injuries, sickness, VT is tough, we were so close in ??? match, hometown refs, and we'll get better".
Do you think I missed any?

Is your DI Coach friend Minkel? That might make sense coming from him, but otherwise, not buying it.

Your right freestyle results mean nothing. You won't see any coaches at Fargo or junior duals. They don't go because it doesn't mean anything. It's not like the top guys in folkstyle are the same guys winning big time freestyle tournaments.

Downey is a stud and he's AA material, if he can handle the school work. Freestyle and folkstyle are different but there are certainly things you can look for in each style that translate over.
