Saw on twitter Ott applied for medical redshirt and passes some of the criteria. I doubt Ncaa grants it. Next years team would be scary good if he received it and king decided to stay.

Objectively, I doubt he gets it based on the number of contests he "participated" in. But if he is able to make some kind of presentation or actually speak in front of the people making the decision, maybe he would have a good chance. Just read he had ACL surgery and Tommy John surgery. Tough SOB.

He'll be over 30% of Iowa's game played this year, so it will be a stretch. Perhaps he'll get some consideration due to having 37 games in 4 years, which is about 3 seasons.

I have no clue if it helps at all but didn't they pull his red shirt off of him over half way through his freshman year and only played in 4-5 games (Think Indiana or N'western game in 12'). But that would be awesome if we got him back one more year. One spot on D we could use some extra help is DE.

Plus when it comes to the NCAA you never know with the way they are all over the map on making decisions.

Well actually they will be playing 14 games so he is under the 30%

  • The student-athlete must suffer the injury during one of their four seasons of college competition or during the senior year of high school. Check
  • The injury must be incapacitating. That means it must be a season-ending injury. Check
  • The injury must occur prior to the start of the second half of the season. Check
  • The student-athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests, whichever is greater. Iowa will play at least 14 games this season, so he needs to have competed in no more than 4.2 contests. The Hawkeye website has him participating in 6 games, but he can probably document that he sat out time against ISU and Ill due to injuries and had limited time against Pitt and N Texas.
  • They also take into account the 5 year clock. Ott has used 4 years. Check.

IMO he has a pretty good case. We'll see...

I am sure they look into the possibilities before even applying, so I am not going to say there is no chance.........but I would put this in the "hail mary", or "onside kick" possibility of success.

Would be sweet though!

I don't know Drew, but from what I know about him if anybody can rehab himself back into playing trim in time for a successful 5th year it would be him. I hope he gets it.

I would agree. Doesn't mean it's a slam dunk, just that there is a possibility. He didn't play as a freshman until 7 or 8 games in, so that will likely be part of Iowa's presentation. They wouldn't have submitted for the appeal if there was no shot.

This would be great for the team and him. I won't pretend to know how granting these medical redshirts go so I won't speculate on what the NCAA will do. But I hope they consider that if Ott goes Pro this year he will be rehabbing trying to get healthy during the time they need to impress pro scouts. I don't want to say it would be unfair bc this happens in football for a number of pro scouts but Ott would have a better opportunity to prove himself with another year being healthy. At the very least it is worth it to try

His loss has been massive this season and has really shown the last few weeks. He was our best defensive player coming into this season. With the emergence of jewel at mlb and with the play of king should he come back, we could be looking at a very scary defensive unit.

Did he really play in a portion of 6 games? Really?

He played the whole game against Ill St and Wisc. He played less than a quarter at ISU and injured in the 3rd quarter vs Illinois. He played against N Texas I'm just not sure how much. I don't think he played against Pitt.

*Edit: Ott was injured before the jNW game.
