The Colorado State thread brought us back to the why don't we play another power 5 school out of conference...just stop. We are not giving up playing 7 home games, so unless we go back to 8 conference games or either drop or rotate the Iowa State series that isn't going to happen. Nor does it need to happen...my boring life allowed me to go through every power 5 schedule and break them down...:) I have it all in a spreadsheet, but don't know where I can add an attachment.

There are 64 teams in the power 5 conferences- Big 10, Big 12, and Pac 12 play 9 conference games and ACC and SEC play 8.

There are 6 teams that go out of there way to play 11 games against power 5 schools and only 1 non power 5 school:
Texas, West Virginia, Northwestern, Ohio State, Purdue, and USC

28 of the teams play 10 games vs. power 5 schools and 2 vs. non power 5....this includes Iowa.

29 teams play 9 games vs. power 5 schools and 3 vs. non power 5.

1 team plays 8 games vs. power 5 and 4 vs. non power 5....Arkansas

A couple other notes of interest from this are:
9 of the 64 power schools play zero OOC games vs. power 5 schools-
Oklahoma State, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Arizona, Oregon, Utah, Washington State, and Arkansas.

The SEC gets all the love because they all play that huge out of conference game to open the season that everybody raves about, yet they are the only conference that doesn't have a team play 10 games vs. power 5 schools. 13 teams play 3 games each against non power 5s, while Arkansas takes top crown and plays 0 power 5 opponents.

Don't let the playing 2 cupcakes bother you, all but 6 teams do it and a majority (ALL SEC schools) play at least 3 out of conference games vs. the non power 5 schools!

Thanks for your time....Go Hawks!!!

So Nw, Oh St, & Pur are all playing 2 P5 non conf games?

How are they doing this? Only 6 home games & a neutral field game?

And why do they do it? Most of these schools (Texas, West Virginia, Northwestern, Ohio State, Purdue, and USC) do not need the exposure.

All have 7 home games. In fact Ohio St has 7 home 4 road and plays TCU in Dallas at Jerryworld. Nwestern shown as home team vs ND not sure if it’s being played in their HS stadium or Soldier Field. I’d guess Soldier.

Well said you may need to save this and copy and paste when schedule arguement comes up again for the millionth time. Guessing as soon as next week.

That game in Arlington will be a good one.

I’d pay you to do my taxes.

Excellent and thanks for your efforts.

So we could do it if we wanted to?

Probably not if wanting 7 home games because years we play isu at home is year we have 2 other non conference and only 4 conference. Year isu on road 2 non conf 5 conference games. Have to figure another power 5 team would want to do home and home. These other teams listed doing it this year can stagger out the other power 5 more easily and have that 1 season like they do next year cause they aren’t playing one school every single year like we are with isu.

Again we would have to do neutral site in place like Chicago, KC or St Louis and get revenue from that with 6 home games if we wanted 2 power 5 with isu game. Be our best bet for it.

So those teams have to have years when they only have 6 home games correct?
incorrect
oh st isn't missing any home games
i assume they scheduled a home only game with or st.
with that said, if Or st was to play niu.....my money would be on niu

OP-NW does not play 2 OOC power 5 teams.

So that brings me to my next question: how can Oh St only play 6 home games some season & we can’t? I didn’t look at Pur & NW future schedules but I’d assume they’ll both have some 6 home game seasons.

Ohio St hasn’t played 6 home games since 04’ the last season teams only played 11 games. Looking at past schedules going back to 02’ as far back as espn shows they have played 7 every year. In fact in 03’, 10’ and 14’ they had 8 home games. Northwestern has least 7 home games next 4 years. 2020 will be only year Purdue only has 6 but set up for every year after that.

I just quickly looked at Oh St future schedules & they play a P5 non conf road game in back to back years. So 1 of those years they have to have 6 road games.

What is that- Michigan (a big 10 team) backed out of a home and Home w Arkansas that is why Arkansas doesn’t have a power 5 team on its schedule. Research prior to going on a rant in which one of you main points really backfires against your conference for backing out of a series is a good thing.

Yeah why would Michigan want to play ND and rekindle a great rivalry when you can play the dumpster fire that is Arkansas. Not like they dropped them to play a bad team for an easy win. Even if they played that Game OP brings up a great point not one single SEC team is playing 2 power 5 teams in non conference and all have 3 easy teams on their schedule.

What’s a worse perception for a conference one big 10 team backing out with a bottom feeder to play ND or with 4 non conference games not one single SEC team willing to schedule and play 2 power 5 teams? Hmmm tough one....

I am not saying Michigan shouldn’t drop Ark and play ND I was enlightening the person as to why Arkansas doesn’t have a power 5 opponent this year. He tried to make a point based on flawed info and I like to point those things out to people that only see the world from black and gold colored glasses. There are other points of view out there outside the two rivers.

Your last little bit there is also wrong based on facts. 2017 flo played Michigan and Florida State while Georgia played ga tech and Notre Dame and South Carolina played NC state and Clemson.
When people on this board obsess with the SEC we sound like clone fans. Do something about it...beat them in a major bowl game on a consistent basis if we want things to change.

OP-NW does not play 2 OOC power 5 teams.

Indeed. Notre Dame is technically not a P5 team. They are, however at or above the level of most P5 schools. A pretty empty point to argue. The P5 thing gets way too much attention. There are good teams that don't play in a P5. Boise St. has a solid reputation. BYU has a strong history although they have slipped recently. Houston is pretty darned good. Not all non-P5 schools have an easy reputation. ISU is a P5 school. So is Kansas. I wouldn't be any more excited about playing Kansas than I am about UNI. Neither one of them makes Iowa better for having played them. They are both cupcakes put on the schedule to pad the W total, at least until one of them beats you.

Iowa needs the additional home game, as they do not get monies from the state for athletics as other schools do. Scheduling a home only series with a P5 team just does not happen. If you want to chip in some additional tax monies for the school so you can see them play another P5 team then be my guest. Most people in the state probably feel that isn't where their tax dollars should go.

The last thing I am going to say about the scheduling thing is that I know it is a pointless argument. It really comes down to butts in seats. As long as a sufficient number of people buy tickets to a game, the people making the schedule will continue on as they have been. As long as 65,000 people are willing to pay to see UNI, they will.continue to get UNI. Obviously, I am in the minority opinion on this issue. I disagree with Ferentz and Barta over this particular issue. I am still a fan of KF and respect Barta. I just wish the OOC schedule was more appealing.

Some conferences (P5 type) consider Notre Dame and BYU a P5 opponent. If I remember correctly, the Pac12 is the only conference that does not consider ND a P5 school. The B1G recognizes both as P5. The ACC only Notre Dame.

The categorization means less to me than the caliber of the program. Would you rather play Boise State or Duke in a home and home?

SEC as a whole is 10-8 vs the Big Ten in the last 4 years in Bowl Games...Last 20 years 44-33 vs Big Ten.

Iowa is 3-4 vs SEC in last 15 years
Iowa is 4-0 vs ACC in last 13 years
Iowa is 12-15 vs Big12 in the last 20 years
Iowa is 2-1 vs Big East in the last 13 years
Iowa is 2-5 vs PAC10 in the last 20 years

23-25 vs P% Conference opponents....not great but not as bad as some want to portray. 7-8 vs P5 Teams in bowl games in last 20 years
