P-Mac: The Next Baer or...

He shot 36% for 3 in the Adidas Gauntlet with D1 Minnesota.

I would expect that to be comparable to his Iowa stats as he would have been facing predominantly high quality d1 prospects in that circuit.

So pretty close to what Baer shot during his career at Iowa. I’m good with that.

I'll take the advice of multiple recruiting services that have him in the top 100 plus his aau coach over an Iowa high school ref.

Just remember Blake Larsen was the #1 recruit and looked how that turned out. There are always misses and Connor was a top 100 recruit and i could find 100 better guards in his class in college basketball. There are some “misses” in the recruiting rankings.

I hope He’s wrong, but seeing high school kids for 20years. Pretty easy to evaluate talent and see who has it and who doesn’t. He say DJ Carton was one of the best he’s witnessed since Paige.

C's shot is ugly, from the field and the line. The importance of form is not the existence of good shooters with bad form but the likelihood that poor shooting form results in poor shooting percentages.

A 6'9" player will hopefully have quite a few open looks since most of his damage should be done around the basket.

It's wait and see for me on P-Mac. C-Mac is not the player his ranking suggested and I'm inclined to believe the same with Patrick. Their rankings we're inflated for the obvious political reasons of their dad being the Iowa head coach. There are some rather inexplicable characteristics of C-Mac's game being a coaches son. Patrick has height but he is so thin right now. Hope he turns out to be a stud.

Did Doug McDermott and Bryce Alford get the same recruiting bump?

Only ESPN had Connor in the top 100. Most others had him in the 120-150 range.

247 had him at 152 and a 3 star. 247 has Pmac as 71 and 4 stars.

ESPN, Rivals and 247 all have Pat in the top 80.

Basketball is far easier to project than football because of aau. Blake Larsen was the biggest guy on the field against competition in SW Iowa.

And I thought Connor did well for a guy ranked in that 100-150 range for his first full year. He was second on the team coming off the bench with 3 assists per game. He did a good job getting to the line. He'll be a very solid player next year.

I expect Pat to be a 7-9 ppg reserve next year and really help this team.

This is a reasonable expectation IMHO. If Patrick can spell Wieskamp and provide a few more minutes here and there, that will suffice.

Glen “the stick” Vidnovick was a skinny kid who did all right for the Hawks. I’m for giving the kid a chance before we go nuts on him. All the message board shot doctors probably wish they could have shot it like P Mac does. Just saying.

I’ve got a friend who has officiated Iowa high school basketball for 20+ years. He said that PM is a nice player, but will struggle in college. He did say by his Junior/Senior year will probably be a good player, but he isn’t going to set the world on fire. He said he is nowhere near the player Gatens was (spare me their different type). He said PM strength and quickness are two areas of concern. He thinks he could use a redshirt year. Said he’s a tweener at the next level (not a post or a wing) This is one mans opinion so don’t shoot me.

He had the CF vs IC West game and said the football player heading to Iowa looked more div 1 ready than PM.

I hope he can gain weight and be a stretch 4 at some point. I just don’t see him as a 3. Pretty tough to be a wing at 6-9.

I would agree that it would be nice if he would take a redshirt as a way to gain strength. I know he will always have trouble adding weight but even just adding 5-10 lbs of muscle would do him wonders I believe long-term for the team and for himself.

However, the quickness one is news to me. In the games I saw - and everything you read about him from ranking services - is that quickness for his height is one of his strengths. No, he’s not as quick as a 6-1 Guard but not many are at his size. He’s definitely going to be an SF and his length and quickness will cause match-up problems depending on who is on him. The Louis King comparison seems somewhat apt - and no I don’t think he is as good as King.

I struggle to understand how high-level basketball-playing kids of a high level college basketball coach have such poor shooting form.

I think Connor deserves recognition for signs of significant work on his shot, though. He made a few late in the year, but it’s not just that he made some—it’s that his arc is much improved.

You think high level coaches have a lot of home time?

His shot will be fine but we don't need him to be a 3 point specialist.

He has better handles and more athleticism than Baer. Baer was not a good ball handler. Pat can attack the basket. White is probably a better comparison but still several differences. White was more of a banger down low. Pat is more finesse.

My comparison for Pat is Louis King at Oregon.
If White was a banger, then why did he disappear when we played physical teams like MSU?

One more time. CM is no PG. Am I questioning his desire and effort? No

Patrick's 3 pt % this year was a nice 45 (or 47)%. However, after a closer look he only made 24 for the year, I believe. Less than one a game. Probably means he only shot them when wide open. Just spit-balling here......

Do you want me to tell you what Baer’s 3 point % was in HS?

It’s the one and only position he is capable of being a contributor at right now (which he did an admirable job of this year). You certainly don’t think he is a SG do you?

Are you one of those posters here that just cries for Zavier Simpson type pg? Zavier per 40 min asst/ to ratio this year 6.5/2.3. Connor McCaffery per 40 min asst/to ratio 6.4/2.7. Not bad for BACK UP pg.

Form and quick release does matter when you go from High School basically shooting Horse to being guarded by real athletes at college level.

He does have an unusually low start point on his jumper from what I have seen on clips. Kind of reminds me of that NW forward John Shurna from 2010 era---that guy was effective at college level.
Perfect comparison with Shurna i just hope Patrick laces up his shoes if memory serves didn't Shurna play with his shoes untied?
