Paddock Gone...paging Marinelli

So I remember reading a post the other day from someone who said "Tom Brands spoke to the wrestlers and said someone was no longer on the team for "X" reason". I about jumped all over him for that comment because I originally read it as he told all of the spectators at the practice that. After re-reading, I didn't reply. Now I know that that person actually had some good info.....wish I remember who it was.

PBS initially indicated he might not be with the team but (new poster or witness protection username) fanpujols5 was the one with the witnessed account you recapped.

So the article mentions St. John and Marinelli, but nothing on Gunther. Oversight or something there? I figured Paddock and Kaleb Young would've battled it out for the 174 lb starter spot next year. IMHO it's a no-brainer at this point to pull Alex's shirt. Let him rip it up this year a give us a shot a title, then let him and Lee sit next year. This year = exciting, next year = brutal re-build btw.

Question for those frequently watching workouts, where is Joey Gunther in the 165 lb. mix? When I saw him wrestle last season (Red Shirt) he was defeating most opponents, including Paddock. Did Paddock leave because of the intensely competitive Iowa wrestling room? What about Jerimiah Moody? Is he ready to compete at 165 lbs.? Gunther is an “Iowa style” wrestler, great work ethic in the room.

Another quick note, Bryce Brill, Northwestern 157 lbs.’er will wrestle this weekend. Coming off an injury season, “if” Brill is healthy he will be a force at 157 lbs. (he may wrestle at 165 lbs.). Again, if healthy Brill is plenty tough.

Someone in another thread said the other day that 1 Iowa wrestler was booted from the team....... Can't remember who it was but I wonder if Paddock was that guy?

FWIW I read an article that mentioned Moore from UNI will be competing at Grand View this weekend at 165. Great test for Alex. Moore was like 8-1 his redshirt year and then got injured I believe. If Alex is up to the task, pulling his shirt is absolutely a no brainer IMHO.

that was me..and maybe I wasn't clear enough in my post about it, tom was talking to the team before practice started and mention that 2 kids were caught and one left and one stayed on the team.

That's a similar lineup that I have with Rathbun at 133. And the top 5 answer is probably a no. We're looking like 7-8 range there. Too many what ifs and question marks. There will certainly be a couple individuals that will be very exciting to watch/develop however.

So Cal I think you're mixing the two Moore's one got hurt and the younger one redshirted, Cooper is listed on IAwrestle as going which will be a good measuring point with a win over Weathermen and 3x NQ, the younger one Padden who redshirted would be less interesting.

Are they both 165?

Cooper Moore, the squads 165 pounder and two-time MAC Champion, will be healthy for the first time in a year. Moore suffered an elbow injury early last season, then sustained a concussion at The Midlands. We’ll see what Moore can do against a fairly large field, as the Panthers alone will be sending three more men at 165 pounds. This could be the best introduction that Moore has had since his freshman year, where he went 8-1 in his first nine matches.

This is the guy I was talking about. Gatekeeper type.

Yikes, I don't think that's anywhere near a top 5 team.

Gotcha didn't read the part about his freshman year, when you said redshirt my mind went to his 157 brother who went 7-2 last year in redshirt.

Fortunately 3 AAs probably gets you in the top 10, but jammenz is licking his chops right now. If PSU and tOSU rotate off of Minny's schedule they may be looking at a share of the B1G dual title. Those bragging rights could last years.;)

Looks like its gonna be very salty around here next year.

In 2018

I think Sorensen 2nd
Kemerer 2nd/3rd
Stoll 3rd

Then we have to hope for some points from the rest. I think Young has a decent chance at AAing at 174, as the field clears out a bit after this season. Then between the next 6 weight classes hopefully we can put together enough meaningful points for a 5th through 7th finish. All while redshirting Marinelli, Lee, Murin, Warner to load up for 2019 title run. We've also got Teasdale coming in that year who will be an old true freshman (he's the same exact age as spencer but a grade younger) who should be ready to step right in to 133 I believe. The 2019 season will also have us returning Kemerer, Stoll, Happel, Turk, Wagner, Rathbun, Wilcke, and Holloway as key cogs to the team. Even if not all starting, they provide very valuable depth to a top team should there be an injury, or some guys need a break from cutting weight. The only thing we need to make that plan come true is land Warner. Warner is that extra 20+ pt scorer we've been missing to put us over the top.

A brutal re-build is pushing it when we could have 4 guys score over 80 points by themselves.

4 guys score 80+ points? You realize that is nearly impossible to do without at least 3 of them being champs? To score 20 pts and take 2nd you would either need to win all 4 matches by major decision, have at least 2 pins or 2 techs and a major. Sorenson will almost certainly have Retherford back yet again. Kemerer will also most likely have Nolf and Smith again. Stoll will have Snyder, Coon and Dhesi. That is 3 possible Finalists, who is your 4th? Assuming that Lee and Marinelli redshirts(with hopefully Warner as well), I don't see another Finalist in that lineup.

"Caught?" Explain.
And don't you lose a whole semester if you leave before the end of it?

Didn't realize Iowa was so "bare" at some weights next year. Obviously some guys coming in and developing that will surprise people just not the same wow factor you expect when looking at an IA lineup. In most of the guys defense, they can't make a name for themselves until they get a chance.

Keeping in mind that Iowa probably has the highest expectation as a program and that is championship or bust, at what point would Brand's seat ever get hot? I think Brands is a great coach and I don't see it occurring, just curious of other's thoughts on the hypothetical. Obviously u don't change just for change, a successor would have to also be "worthy".

The next 5-10 years of college wrestling will be very interesting to see how parity shifts. Lots of teams doing good things.

Tom and Terry can coach, there is no doubt about that.

But for years, they've somewhat lagged in recruiting. Iowa can get back in the mix if they keep getting top quality recruits. Marinelli, Lee and Teasdale all look like a a nice uptick in the last two years, but more is needed, particularly in the upper weights. Keeping fingers crossed on Warner.

PSU is bringing in blue ribbon horses every year, and Iowa needs to step it up in the recruiting department.
