A & A Pagliai’s Pizza, a mainstay of Iowa City's Northside Marketplace, is one of eight contenders from around the state in the running for best slice of pizza in Iowa.

The Iowa Tourism Office is holding a bracket-style Pizza Madness tournament this month that pits the restaurants' best pies against one another. Pagliai’s, located at 302 E. Bloomington St., has entered its Palace Special — topped with sausage, beef, pepperoni, mushrooms and onions — and faces a crab rangoon pizza from Fong's Pizza & Tiki Bar in Des Moines.

There will be three rounds of Pizza Madness, and a winner will be named March 25. Round one began at noon on Monday and ends at noon Friday. Round two will begin at noon March 19 and ends at the same time March 22. The championship round will begin at noon March 23 and ends at noon March 25.

To vote visit the Tourism Office's Facebook page.

Also in the first round: Zipp's Pizzaria from Adair faces Mabe's Pizza from Decorah; P’s Pizza House of Le Mars goes against Great Plains Sauce and Dough Company of Ames; and Santa Maria Vineyard and Winery from Carroll challenges Zeno’s Pizza from Marshalltown.

The winning restaurant will provide a $3 off coupon for customers to download after the results are announced.

"We know travelers love to eat where the locals do. These eight local favorites are all great, but we’re looking to find the best of the best," Shawna Lode, manager of the Iowa Tourism Office, said in a Tuesday news release.

How many people have tried enough of these pizzas to really know if one is better than another?

I always thought that pizza was overrated, not terrible, just not something to write home about

If they were really looking for the best in the state, they would have had the population of each major city vote on the best pizza in town and then have a vote state wide.

This kind of reeks of the tourism office being paid by these places.

It's just a silly, fun promotion. It's not intended to be a serious attempt to find the best pizza in Iowa. It's all subjective and a matter of opinion anyway.

True and I get that. But if you're going to do it, do it right.

Mr. P's is good but the representative from the western region should be the original pizza joint in the West, El Fredo's Pizza in Sioux City.

You simply can't have a contest like this without places like El Fredo's or Wig & Pen. BTW, Fong's sucks. Never did like it.

Sioux City has a couple great pizza places. I'm confused as to why El Fredo's isn't on the list. Didn't Tomaso's in CR win some kind of award in Italy for their pizza a few years ago?

No "Fong's"?

Any pizza with crab rangoon as a topping should be automatically eliminated.

But have you tried it? It's way better than anything from any of the Poly-eyes. I don't know about the one in IC, but the Paglias in Johnston is where the WT go to try and be more suburban white trashy.

These lists are always dumb.... But leaving off Zoeys is just weird. It must be because they don't have a signature pizza

yeah any pizza competition in Iowa has to have the flying tomato on it.

That being said, and after having most all of these pies, my vote has to go to Zeno's in Trumpnightmaretown.

That place is legit. Best pizza I have ever had, hands down.

Well it's political season here on HROT and everything is serious these days.

You should be ashamed for bringing silly and/or fun to this forum.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I've been to both locations and i thought the IC one was much better (food/service/level of WT, etc.).
