Having Mr. Mejia on here posting info about upcoming matches got me thinking about respectfully requesting if other parents can try and do the same either through posting matches on Youtube or keep us Hawk fans up to date. If you are shy, or think we message boards geeks are a bunch of D-Bags (which let's face it....), maybe you can use the guys at IAWrestle to facilitate stuff like that. I know getting info from Mr. Mejia gets a lot of us psyched up...I also think JRent's Dad has been on here as well. To all of you, good luck this season.

A bonus for parents who choose to be active on this site -- once everybody knows you're out here they're apt to speak very nicely about your kid!

It doesn't hurt that the Clovis High community really supports the team. Lots of newspaper coverage and the like. Combine that with an involved parent and you are good to go. When Nick Nevills committed to PSU, we were really able to get a lot of good background on him from the local papers. That team's tradition is incredibly strong.

I'm not sure I'm on the Iowa board from that statement. Hope your son keeps on winning. My view on parents posting on their school board is they better have very thick skin, and very few parents can handle that. Just recently, Myles Martin dad had a go round. All relationships start off great and then the newness wears off, especially when they start to lose. Not saying it happens only on the Iowa board, because it happens on all boards where people can hide behind a false name.

So how is 34 and holding right now? Desolate?

Thanks for asking Turk's sorry it took so long, I was talking to John about are next RS to pull. Things are moving along and pulling our first RS this week. Come March we will be ready for are next title run. How are things going over here? You look like a pretty good team so far. Come March lets see how much that win you have against us in November means. Duals are good, but Nationals is when it counts (of course that coming from the person that his team loss). It's going to be hard beating PSU but a lot can happen during a season. Now if you we're just trying to be a #ss when you posted that, we're going to beat the hell out of you at Nationals and see who falters and who doesn't. I'm sure you weren't being that way, so ignore my sentence about Ass kicking! Have a bless day my good friend "WildTurk".

Every time Myles Martin loses, Mr. Martin goes on some message board and claims his son was "hosed" by the ref. He doesn't get negative feedback because he posts on message boards. He gets negative feedback because he makes excuses on message boards. I've never seen another wrestler's parent behave like that online.

On the other hand, can you imagine being Chance Marstellar's parents and logging into 34 and Holding and seeing one of the regular posters call your son a "cancer"? If that were my kid, I would want to reach down that poster's throat and pull his beating heart out his chest cavity. I would probably be better off staying away from the message boards if my son were wrestling.

Here we go again, I never said he was the cancer, was I saying K Crutchmer was the cancer because his name was there too. You posting about it now just because I'm from another board. Like this board has never got after a wrestler for underperforming, or losing a match. Taking the high road, what a joke, on the Iowa board. Still laughing

Mike...is that a self-portrait? You kinda remind me of Norman Fell or Mr. Rogers

The Alton's dad was active periodically on the Penn State boards. He got to the point of challenging posters to fist fights. It didn't end well for him.

Sorry Iowa, should of know it had to come from a touchy/feely kind of guy which would of not been a Iowa fan. He/could be a she, almost got me crying from that attack she was putting on me, but I learned from the best, spoke my mind and back pedaled off the mat. lol

After going back and re-reading Cholly's post............he never mentioned your name. He didn't attack you in that post. You "outed' yourself. Nobody here knew whom he was referring to unless they had been reading your board until you put your foot in your own mouth.

And then to come on here and make some smart mouth comments about our board and what we say here seems more like you trying to deflect attention away from your own mistake.

Not sure what you said.....but putting the word cancer and comments about wrestlers in the same sentence doesn't seem like a smart idea.

Seems like you need a time out. Get back on the Meds too.

Better yet.......whatever you said ..........about whomever.....go tell them in person.

Yeah, I gotta admit that this could be a tough place for parents to interact with fans. Fan is still short for fanatic. A thick skin is good advice.
Developing into a top-5 contender in D1 wrestling isn't for the faint of heart anyway, and only a small number across the U.S. will ever make it in their college careers.
However, we expect top-5 wrestlers at Iowa. To make matters worse, we sometimes forget what life must be like for a 18 or 19-year-old, living away from home, who's taken on one of the roughest challenges college sports can offer while also studying.

I have to say there is some truth to what mike tognetti wrote, specifically about parents needing to have thick skin. I think this board and Iowa fans in general are the best, and will give tremendous support to their wrestlers.

But message boards, being what they are, always get a few characters who occasionally go overboard. There may be unfair criticism by a poster who doesn't know exactly what happened or if the kid is sick or injured or whatever. When a kid is trying and giving his all, well, he deserves respect. I think overall the Iowa forum is excellent in that regard. Imho, themat forum is where there is no shortage of garbage.

As long as parents understand that those types of characters are the rare exceptions on this board, and want to provide helpful info and insight, then more power to 'em. Like many, I've found posts by jaysdad very helpful.

All right... I know you guys are just baiting me into bringing up another parent who couldn't handle criticism... so here goes.

One of my FAVORITE rival teams has a parent who found out the hard way it isn't wise to post on forums as a father of a wrestler.

Mr Meeks now has disappeared from the message board community after a year or two of interacting with fans. Good move on his part.

It has to be terribly hard to read negative things about your son. These parents were accustomed to the adulation when their sons were the high school studs. When they met athletes of equal or greater talent, that adulation turned to criticism.

Hopefully these people realize you can create multiple handles so if you want to post as a parent, you an do that but also post separately as a fan under anonymity.

Hell, some speculate the whole off topic board is actually only a dozen people...

theres always gonna be block heads. heck after the unexpected year the football team is having there is still some bad mouthing from our own fans.

Yeah, I well remember that. You tend to give your own some slack of course, but .... I'll just leave it at that.

Martin's dad has been at it for years. Check the Flo board linked to his son's matches with Zahid Valencia, for example. Austin Myers' dad (son red shirting I believe at WVa) is belligerent.

Mike Evans' family comported themselves well here. Spencer Lee's dad rarely posts, but when he does he's on point - he called out one of our amateur medical professionals after Spencer hurt his shoulder, but it was warranted.

And then there's Papa Bear - in a class by himself. Deals well with well-wishers and knuckleheads alike; strong use of video clips, GIFs and memes as well.

Parents need to realize that most of the negative posts on here are by rival posters. Some rival posters even sign up as Hawkeye fans just to bad mouth athletes. I love the parents that do post here but unfortunately I would suggest they don't due to the anonymous ***holes.

You also get a few more nuts around here since it has so much action. Their is a reason so many psu, minn, osu, osu, and clown posters feel the need to live on the Iowa Hawkeye board.

You will always have sarcasm and snarkey comments about wrestlers, but terms like cancer could never lead to anything good. A parent that can swallow that kind of nonsense and still remain engaged, would set a strong example for their children.

Umm...no. It's all rainbows and unicorns if your kid is winning by bonus each and every match. When they underperform, it's easy for the board to pile on. These kids have alot going on from academics, the practice grind, and their personal lives.

Someone took him up on the offer?

That was on themat. Mr. Alton posted his phone number and a fight challenge. The whole mess started when someone questioned his son's intelligence and academic performance.

On a side note, we had a poster here that contacted Mr. Alton and also offered to "meet" with a few other posters. I can remember who it was, but he was crazy.

I have never seen the board pile on any of the athletes. I have seen 3 or 4 loud idiots do it and some dense people can't figure out that the vast majority back the athletes. Heck I can prove you wrong right now. We have a couple of weights that are glaring holes right now with little chance of getting points at nationals. There hasn't been more than 1 or 2 posters attack them. Quit letting the loud minority and opposing fan trolls paint the majority of us with that type of brush.

CoachSparky? He had some fiery posts back in the day

I remember 2 guys were supposed to hook up at carver last year.

Bingo. That's him. I forgot his name - seems he's not around lately.

Queso and Daddy Meeks were at each others throats for awhile. That was entertaining.

I will say this, and it's not intended to be pro or anti anything. When I'm on these boards it's to discuss winning and losing--more specifically, how Iowa can win, will win, might win, isn't winning but could, etc. I never come on here to make a personal attack against anyone, wrestlers or coaches. But there are multiple posts in which I've said So-and-So isn't the answer, or "God, I hope I never have to watch So-and-So wrestle another match." I don't know any of these kids, and I wouldn't want anyone making a comment like that about my kid. But if you tale away the ability to opine about performance without getting too caught up in whether you're hurting someone's feelings, that takes away 95% of the discussion about sports in general. College is that gray area between high school sports and pro sports, in which fans don't know the competitors personally and it becomes a bit distanced emotionally.

Having gone through the Iowa program, I respect all of these kids. I think they'll have better lives and be better workers and husbands and dads down the line as a result. I respect their parents for supporting them and missing work to show up at their meets and driving them to Fargo in the summers and providing emotional support when there are set-backs. It's not easy for anyone. So that's my blanket support from the human point of view.

Probably best for families NOT to come on this board, because it's not going to be 100% goodwill, especially during the down times, and those are the times you don't need to deal with more negativity. If you must, come on this board during the offseason or after your son pins his opponent to win a dual at CHA. Otherwise know that the fans support you, deep down, and leave it at that. :)

If your son ever pins a Hawkeye, you might want to lay low for a while, there, Papa. . . .;)

Better yet, maybe he could just become a Hawkeye and we can put all of this behind us. . . . Deal?

Though I swing by this board regularly I have made only one or two other posts. Reading the invitation to PapaBear to post if his son ever pinned a Hawkeye in CHA evoked in me a great memory.
I am not a parent of a recruit but my sun did wrestle for PSU. The last time I posted here was on a snowy night out here in the east several years ago when I shared my good feelings for the Iowa folks I’ve met and the favorable experience I had at Iowa City the weekend my son competed at CHA. Although he wrestled in CHA, he did not wrestle a Hawkeye there. He did, however, wrestle Hawkeyes 3 times; he split matches with one, and in the third match he won by fall on his senior day, and last match in Rec Hall. It was the proudest moment in his entire wrestling experience and just recollecting it now gets the blood flowing.
So it wasn’t CHA, but I hope you guys don’t mind me sharing the story. IMHO, making posts as a parent of an active wrestler is tricky business and I would recommend against it. Heck, it’s been nearly a decade since I was in that circumstance and I still hesitate.
