Pariano out at NW

I wonder if this puts Reenan back out onto the market considering he's still a SR, and there been a lot going on at NW. Borschel leaves, Micic transfers, Pariano Fired.

Reenan would certainly be a great addition at a semi-needed weight (or would there be too much overlap between he and Young [and Marinelli] in college?. Did he have any interest in Iowa in the first go around? Don't recall his name being thrown around as a potential recruit.

Also Phil Laux transferring there for about 15 minutes.

Would be an awesome recruit for Iowa, he would fit right in that 174/184 range and he's a stud that we need if we can't get Mark Hall. He only weighed in at 177 for the WNO dual and he won at 195. Does anyone know if he had any interest in Iowa prior to his NW commitment?

Northwestern released the following statement:

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Drew Pariano is no longer with Northwestern University. Matt Storniolo has been named interim head coach of the Wildcats wrestling program for the 2015-16 campaign.

Based on the terse and non-praising nature of the announcement (no "has decided to step down to pursue other interests," not even a "we thank him for his service"), it doesn't sound pretty.

Drew's announcement, by comparison, was magnanimous and praised Northwestern.

I don't know Drew but have heard others speak highly of him, including MN Hawk, whose opinion I trust. As such, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt in the absence of more info. Never like to see news like this. Life is messy sometimes.

One of the assistants at our club is a Northwestern alum and we were talking about the situation tonight. Basically, from what I gathered, Drew wasn't especially happy with the administration there and he did not hide it.

Another thing he was telling me is that Northwestern is one of the strictest when it comes to any type of rules violation and that while he did not think that Drew would commit any, that it is a possible reason for his untimely departure.

I have heard nothing but great things about Drew Pariano and I think he is one of the best coaches in college right now. I hope that a few D1 programs that are in major need of a facelift have already reached out to him.

DayHawk, Northwestern is the most difficult job in the Big Ten, probably by far. Ever seen the size of their roster? Last year, it was the smallest, not just in the Big Ten, but in the country. That's the administration's limiting them, not Pariano's. The academic requirements and the tuition rates (and there isn't an in-state carveout either...Northwestern is the only private school in the Big Ten) are two more issues there. What Pariano had done there is nothing short of extraordinary, and I can't imagine that he'll stay unemployed for long.

Further, as TarpHawk said, Northwestern's press release was the PR equivalent of them saying "Drew Pariano can go <expletive> himself.". Frankly, it violates rule number one of how to write a press release announcing a coaching change.

SHP, it is by far the hardest job in the Big Ten for all of those reasons you listed. He did a fantastic job bringing in a top 10 recruiting class year in year out. He also does a great job in the room developing kids. I would love to see him at a well established academic school with a weak wrestling program (Davidson actually comes to mind, I think he could work wonders there).

I would say to hold judgement of Northwestern for the time being as we do not know the exact reasons of him being fired.

On the press release point, I'm not holding judgment. Even C.D. Mock was unceremoniously kicked to the curb at North Carolina a year before he planned to retire anyway with more grace and dignity than Pariano was.

I apologize, I took down what I posted. After further thought, I decided that I'm not sure what I posted was supposed to be for public consumption.

Damn...I almost repeated it now to the latest inquiry haha.

Does anybody know where Phillip Laux ended up? Thanks.

Laux is a student at Iowa. Not aware of his future plans though someone did post he hoped to be back on the team next season. Not that he's a world beater but he'd be nice to have around after Corey / Thomas graduate.

Isn't Laux the same year as Clark/Gilman? Or is the fact that he hasen't been on a team all year give him an extra year?

Laux delayed entering college by 1 year, putting him behind those guys. He's burning a year right now, actually.

He delayed entering college thus he will be a year behind them, graduating after.
You would think Laux could get another year with the situation at Northwestern. Isn't that what Micic did? Think he has 4 more years after his olympic redshirt.

I'm a former NU wrestler. I wrestled for Timmy. Both Timmy and Drew are great guys and great friends. The scholarship limit of 23 guys prevents them from being competitive. Sunkin ship. They will be solid next year if Reenan wrestles.

Drew granted Micic a full release and encouraged him to take the Olympic so yes should have 4 years. Phil's clock had started while at Iowa, before going to NW for a cup of coffee, so the chances of getting that year back are slim to none unless an injury was the cause. Not being happy or liking where you're at likely won't be reason to get an extra year.

No one forced Laux to transfer from jNW so that's highly unlikely.

Reenan has to be considering other options at this point, right?
I mean, NW did look like the next tOSU when he committed, but on a dime, it went from feast to famon over there. I mean who's he gonna roll with in the room that's gonna help him?
Nick, come to Iowa!
