Patrick Mccaffery

What? Vinny Brookins did not have a flat shot, not as I remember it anyway. It was high arching and one of the sweetest I've ever seen.

Nope you must be thinking of the wrong player. Vince’s shot was very flat. I don’t recall him ever being referred to as “Vinny” unless that just what you called him.

The flattest shot I can recall is the great Bob McAdoo in his days with the Buffalo Braves. Led the league in scoring and his shots never looked like they would clear the front of the rim. Vince Brookins is the Hawkeye closest to that ugly flat shot but, like Bobby Mac it worked.

Usually an ugly shot form means a bad shot. P McC needs to either be the rare guy with an ugly shot that works (Jamaal Wilkes) or he'll probably never be much of a shooter. But, at 6'9" he doesn't have to be a great shooter to be a really good player.

P McC looks like a kid who started shooting farther than he could as a little kid so he kind of throws the ball at the basket. Then, as he got older and more dominant he never had to fix the shot. The kid is athletic that knows what around the basket. The alley oop was a fantastic highlight.

One thing in his favor that nobody's mentioned - he's been to the line more than anyone on the team not named "Garza".

That's not what I remember.....Vince shot that midrange, pop up jumper. It was a really sweet shot, but it wasn't flat. I wouldn't call it high arching, but it wasn't flat. Maybe we see it the same but we view "flat" and having some arch differently.

I must admit, I. Just rewatched the Georgetown game and shot was flat but not as flat as I had thought. Yes, his game was mid-range as there weren’t many of the “bombers” without the 3 point shot. But his shot WAS pretty darn flat as Don Crique said after a Brookins bucket “Vince Brookins LINE DRIVES. one in” It was a flatter shot than Patrick’s for sure.

I grew up in Newton and went to the Newton - IC West game at Wells in 2017 when Connor Gohlson and Garrett Sturtz basically destroyed both McCaffrey kids in the quarters. Patrick fouled out with 3 points. Sturtz put up 33 on Connor. Newton came up short that day but it made me recalibrate my expectations for Patrick and Connor. Connor hasn't had a very good outside shot but he can run an offense. His biggest weakness is trying to do things he doesn't have the ability to do. Patrick has had so many things happen to him to essentially stunt his growth as a player. I think Patrick can elevate his game over time but it will take some patience. Connor needs to do what he does best.

Yup, one game 4+ years ago really defines a player today.

I kind of agree and disagree. CM does a very good job playing within his skill set IMO at Iowa. T/O to assist ratio as an example. Sturtz is a guy that does not get your attention, but he is constantly making plays. A very good player IMO. Both McC boys have ugly shots and that is hard to understand with D1 Father and D1 player/Mother.

CMac's jump shot is certainly very odd from the setup, he never squares his body/shoulders to the basket and seems to favor having his shooting shoulder forward from his jump shot stance. The only good thing I can say about that fundamental flaw is that at least he isn't setting up for his jump shot with his non-shooting shoulder forward towards the basket which would be even more awkward looking.

Hate to say it, but for being coaches kids pat and cmac have very ugly looking shots. I was pretty critical of cmac his freshman year, but damn is he a good player to have. So underrated. I have a feeling pmac will follow.

Just look around the B1G at all these coaches kids with sweet looking jump shots like Ricky Pitono Jr (bad example), Tyler Underwood (brick layer), Jack Hoiburg (makes Connor’s shot look like a lefty Steph Curry), or Stephen Izzo (never mind)
