I think that’s a great exaggeration. He’s only 21 and guys do improve. He’s got a pretty good feel for the game and some strength training would probably improve his athleticism slightly. Elite 3 point shooting is a valuable skill.

If he’s projected as a second round pick then obviously people are seeing something that you aren’t. Garza has beaten the odds, I don’t see why Sandfort can’t possibly.

if you want to work on your shot you are better off doing it professionally if you have the option.

D1 kids have as much gym time as they need to work on shots. He needs to come back & shoot 40%+ from 3 this year.

I’m comparing two guys who will likely get drafted at about the same place in the second round. This has little to do with their college success. And Payton won’t be a role player next year, he will probably be All Big.

A lot of scouts now look at FT% percentage more than 3PT percentage. It is better, statistically at predicting NBA 3PT percentage potential

I don't really see PS " improving his stock" by returning. He is what he is. Another year won't bridge the gap for him athletically. I'd still consider Joe W a better athlete then Payton, (and a higher % three ball scorer),and he's hanging on by his finger nails to the league....

Weezy has shot poorly from 3 in his limited NBA action. Sandfort has a more pure, streaky stroke but not quite as athletic. Making a roster guaranteed would be a coup for Payton.

there is actually a mathematical correlation between college FT % and potential 3PT % in NBA. It's used by a lot of scouts and has > than 60 percent hit rate. example Kawaii Leonard was a 25% 3pt shooter in college but a 78% FT shooter. He is a career 39% 3PT in NBA.

When you get a pro shooting coach and can play ball full time it makes a difference. Most guys get better at shooting in the league. The scouts don't care that much that your 3PT % in college increased 4 % in your senior year. They know PS can shoot.

With NIL, I'd normally say a guy projected to go in the 2nd round might as well come back to college.
