Payton Sandfort - Waukee ‘21

Fair question. But I would say having been around the sport for a long time and following recruiting closely. To me he projects as a career bench player and a guy to come in and hit open shots when called upon. I get that he has 2 more years of developing but I don’t see him gaining 8 inches on his vert (because he can not elevate very well at all) and gaining 20-30 LBs of muscle. He would need to put on that extra weight and strength because he is not athletic enough to get away with being slight of frame. I definitely agree that there are a ton of kids exactly like this out there and I don’t understand the logic of throwing a scholarship at him when you can probably get him at the end of the recruitment process If you don’t land ur other targets. A kid I would much rather seem get offered by Iowa would be the youngest duax kid. He’s practically the same height, quicker, can jump higher, stronger, faster, a better ball handler, and better finishing at the rim. Makes 0 sense to me at all

Teams are always looking to add bench players or even starters that can play defense with serious intensity and hit shots as their main repertoire. You familiar with the term 3 and D?

The fact is that professionals with decades of working experience and success at high levels project him to make much bigger strides than you have with your amateur take concocted from very limited experience.

Most people familiar with high level recruiting understand early offers like this are based on potential, many schools offer in state or regional prospects in order to keep their foot in the door if a prospect reaches that max potential in order to ward off the big name programs. We understand that an offer such as this will become “committable” only if the recruit reaches a certain threshold.

He is very comparable to Nicholas Baer. He's a very good 3 and D guy with a long wingspan to disrupt passing lanes.

He might be a more polished shooter than Baer was at this level.

Ignore the clown troll saying he's not tough enough. Nobody would mistake Baer or even Joe Wieskamp as being tough. They are just great fundamental players with excellent shooting. I believe Sandfort fits that mold. And we all saw what good fundamentals did to ISU at Carver this year.

Baer attempted like 1 three pointer in high school. He was a post player.

You can question how the rest of Paytons skill set will develop towards the Big Ten level, but there is little argument that he is an elite shooter.

Him in joe wieskamp have 0 in common as players other then the fact there 6’6 and white . Have you seen the kid play?

I agree with you on the shooting. He’s got a nice stroke

I never questioned his ability to shoot because it’s top notch. I questioned his limited athletic ability now and going forward. He’s simply not a high level athlete

Which is why I drew the comparison to Baer.

The reference to Wieskamp was related to your asinine comment about toughness.

Well I'll agree with Minnesota and Utah's assessment, you can go back to arguing that Terrence Lewis will develop a basketball IQ or Prentiss Nixon will learn a jump shot.

I'll gladly take an elite shooter and good defender. We all saw what Baer did to Shayok last year. Came off the bench to drop 14 points and 7 boards.

Dude got a whole bunch of offers in the last few days, including Iowa. Supposedly the best shooter in the state, I feel like I should know more about him. Sounds like a JW clone as a 6’6 SF.

Anyone got anything beyond that?
I must admit, I judged the book by it's cover after looking at that baby-face. THEN, I watched the video. The kid has good court vision, made some great passes and has a really quick release on his shots. I really like what I see. As for "not being tough enough", he's got two more years of HS for crying out loud. He'll get bigger and tougher and be a lot more like JW in my opinion. Please join us, Payton.

The Hawks would be lucky to land this kid but other than being from Iowa, there is no allegiance to the Hawks or U of I. The poster who said Nicholas Baer is spot on. Hard worker, humble, and will do whatever it takes to make those around him better. Having watched him play as a soph, I do agree with some of the assessments as I was shocked that he is getting these offers - but I will say that the kid will develop drastically over the next couple years (and has developed since the end of the high school season obviously) and as another poster said, the shot and quick release is there. The kid definitely has qualities that would make me excited to have him as a Hawkeye if that is what he were to decide.

Same assessment of Baer and Bohannon out of high school. Both worked out fine. Baer is proof that heart and hustle prevails over natural athletic ability.[/QUOTE]

You've been drumming up a lot of vitriol on these forums the last couple days. I can't tell if you're actually an iowa fan or a just a troll sent from one of our westerly institutions.

Judging by his command of the English language I certainly hope he is not an Iowa GRADUATE.

Definitely not associated with the family or anything, just a fan. I wanted to make some good compliments that granted him 4 offers in the span of 2 days. He will need to continue to develop and work on quickness. He could also be more versatile on offense. He still has two full seasons to get this into gear. But his shooting, size, and awareness is always going to be there. Hence why he was offered this early.
I agree. He looks like a talented Soph.
Now the key is does he continue to grow his game..Quickness, Hops, dribble drive, handles.

Waukee has consistently produced Division I players in all sports. They have a great athletics program. If you don’t know who is coming through the pipeline in the top metro schools you probably just don’t care that much.
I live in Cedar Rapids. The fact that I don’t have my finger on the pulse of Central Iowa high school basketball underclassmen is pretty normal. I certainly know that Waukee has talented athletes.

I wasn’t saying it was bad. Not all of us can be total losers.

If you look at one of anonymous' last sentences where he uses "in" instead of and then "there" instead of they're, used "then" instead of than you get an idea about the intelligence of the clown you're arguing with in just one sentence so just drop it and take the thread in a better direction. "Him in joe wieskamp have 0 in common as players other then the fact there 6’6 and white ."

Every one of these turns into a pissing contest, as usual. It really doesn't have to be either love him or hate him. At first glance he certainly looks to have a very nice stroke, nice size and such. His athletic ability and foot speed certainly seems to be a little suspect to be a high D1 athlete, at least at this point. But again, he has 2 years to improve on that. I understand both sides. We all know we have not been a great defensive team, and if this kid can't guard anybody that's a problem. He's obviously blown up the last month, and we're clearly not the only team to notice. Will be interesting to continue to watch his development.
