Totally agree.
do we have the right coaching staff for the new rule changes? Are we recruiting the right kids? Riding people out and winning 1-0 isn’t sustainable going forward if Iowa is going to stay relevant.

You realize as many as 5 of these guys won’t be in the lineup next semester.
Nope, I have heard rumblings but I know nothing. I just don’t believe we have the coaches that are capable of adapting to the new style of wrestling. Technically gifted wrestling is surpassing aggression and intensity. I don’t see Iowa wrestlers getting better offensively. They get stronger and in better shape….

Im also wrong a lot.

To be fair to the program some bad things have happened lately
One of which is this performannce. IMO the bad things that happened have nothing to do with the lackluster performance of our 125-157 pound lineup or Teske's poor start this season. I get it that some bad things happened, but there's other stuff happening (i.e., Woods wrestling to survive these last couple outings) that just shouldn't be happening. We have no sense of urgency and clearly no desire to destroy our opponents.

I honestly would like to see them shirt Gabe, save the eligibility of Ferrari, hit the portal hard and regroup next year. We are simply not a trophy winning team this year.
With the way these guys are wrestling it might be tough getting top tier talent from the portal. I'm thinking put our best team out there and hope that we can do well enough to draw some decent talent next year and beyond. This snooze-fest style is not going to bring the next Spencer Lee to Iowa, yet those are the kind of kids we're going to have to draw if we want to remain relevant in this NIL / transfer portal era.

Seriously?? With upgrades coming in January, we are definitely a trophy winning team - maybe even favorites to finish second even without Arnold (but with a healthy PK).

What upgrades are you talking about? Outside of AJ who else are you talking about?
Even with AJ and Kueter I'm not sold his points give us enough.

Unless Gabe is starting it's entirely possible we get nothing out of 125, 133, 149, 174, 184, and 285 (if Ben doesn't go).

That's worse than bad. That's devastating.

almost has the feel of the last team Zalensky had when he was shown the door after an 7th place finish at the NCAA...i'm not saying Brands is out by any means...more along the lines of those guys seemed to stand around and couldn't score either...kinda like this years team
I don’t want to jump off the ledge or anything but this is beginning to feel like Zaleskys ending years. If it wasn’t for transfer portal this would be lucky to be top 10 team
Then your memories aren't very good.
We were 10-5 then 11-7 in duals those last two years. Guys weren't competing. Recruiting was awful. We were placing in the middle of the big ten and hadn't crowned even a big 10 champ in 3 years.
Tonight was not up to expectations but it was not in the same stratosphere of the last 2 zalesky seasons. Our 04/05 and 05/06 teams would have lost the last two duals convincingly.
I'm pissed we aren't going to be competitive with psu come March but let's not forget how bad things really were.

Keuter likely isn’t top 3, but I think he is AA quality.

Anthony Ferrari is an upgrade over VV IMO. May not be a ton of points at NCAAs, but should be more enjoyable to watch.

AJ would be a big improvement.

PK is very good. When he gets in wrestling shape, he will be a handful.

Teske will be better when healthy. Is Schriever a better option? What is going on with him. Haven’t seen him - is he hurt? Still not many NCAA points.

Ayala is good. Not sure what is going on with him, but think he is much better as the year progresses.

Woods and Franek are still very good. They just need to open up a bit more.

Caliendo is fine.

184 is a hole.

141, 157, and 197 will get us a lot of points if AJ is in the lineup.

Still think 125 and 285 are AAs - and maybe even 165 and 174.

133 and 149 get us a few points, but not many. 184 is a NQ.

Yep, everyone else is crazy……. You must get to watch practice or something.

Where you get your opinion on Drake, Teske, and PK I don’t know. They haven’t shown being able to AA at all.

Anthony has wrestled one match in 3 years??

You "guys" are the whiniest bunch of girls I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Every meet it's pure comedy; if we do poorly it's "Omg we'll be lucky to get top 10", if we do well it's "Wow Jace Rhodes looks like a title contender."

Hopefully you're all just half drunk every meet or something and not actually like this in real life. 🤣

Trust me brother, these meets are anything but comedy; they are painful. And for those of us watching from home many probably wish we were half drunk so we could be in a more vegetative, relaxed state watching some of these matches. Even you can't be OK with what you saw out of 25, 33, 41, 49 and 57 these last two meets. Our two finalists barely escaped ISU with victories and the other weights just sucked. And tonight wasn't much better. I don't think we're whining; I think it's more like bitching and complaining because we have a higher standard than what we've been seeing these last couple weeks.

I'm usually an optimist, but this is really hard to find anything positive about this dual so far.

This is like watching a Brian Ferentz offense materialize on the mat, makes me want to vomit.

I hope we're coming off a bout of sickness and this isn't what we've turned in to. If this is what we bring in March we may not even be top 10.
Another lackluster showing attributed to "sickness" or "training through the dual". It's garbage, and it's far too common lately.

"Not whining, just bitching and complaining." You might want to google synonyms for whining lol.

I absolutely didn't enjoy watching 95% of that meet, but I guess I'm more inclined to look at the body of work as a whole. (i.e. Real and Kennedy typically look much better, so I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they have something going on rather than saying they don't wanna be out on the mat, etc.) Then with the young guys/fill ins, my expectations for them couldn't be lower anyways, so I don't really waste a second thought on them.

Everybody knew this was gonna be a rough ride, I'm just gonna hope like hell the Ferraris come in and enjoy the heck out of Real, Caliendo, and Gabe.

All good though, I know you're a good Hawk fan, I just find it comical reading the peaks and valleys many of you post on here from a meet to meet basis.

This is what happens when a Ferentz style offense takes over the Iowa wrestling program.

This thread is full of idiots. Let’s take a look through the lineup.

125- Ayala is my biggest concern right now. He’s cutting too much weight.

133- 3rd string guy wrestling a top 15 opponent.

141- Real won a controlled match against a kid that did nothing the entire match. Never in danger of losing.

149- A wrestler that won’t be starting second semester. Anthony Ferrari is capable of being an AA.

157- Franek is a super senior and isn’t changing. He’s the same guy he has always been and will continue to be. People expecting him to magically change continue to look like morons.

165- Top 5-6 guy

174- Kennedy wrestled while Gabe makes his decent. Won’t be in the lineup second semester.

184- 3rd string bumping up because of suspensions. What the hell are the coaches supposed to do?

197- Has wrestled well. Will be replaced with a title contender second semester.

285- 2nd string wrestling because of suspensions. Will likely be replaced second semester with a young dynamic heavy.

We’ve been devastated by suspensions, and wrestled guys at 133 and 174 for other reasons. No coach in the country would look great with this hand. I hope some of you chicken littles F’ing jump.

A win is a win. We all knew this season could be tough with all the suspensions. Hopefully we still have a few lineup improvements coming in the new year!
We are better at 157 and 165 because of suspensions. If we put Arnold at 174, then it’s just 184 and Heavyweight adversely affected by suspensions, right? Obviously 2 important holes, but those holes don’t excuse lackluster performances at other weights. And, let’s be honest, we’d be even more pissed if Assad was wrestling because he’s be losing or barely winning.

What we have coming back next year, and with what we have coming in thus far, it’s going to be more of the same. I think fans understand the suspensions may have hurt the team this year. But the overall product likely isn’t changing next year, even with the possible addition of the Ferraris. We are still going to have holes that aren’t planned for, poor match strategy, and lack of offense for most of our guys. Yes, we might place top 3-5, but we won’t have many (if any) finalists, and I think everybody agrees we have zero shot of catching PSU next year or the next several years. We’ve had many years to try and the gap has widened.

TNT have many strengths and may be good coaches, but they aren’t aren’t catching PSU. Hoping, wishing, whatever, I think most can see that it’s not happening. Like the Iowa football offense—something has to change. Yes..we like our guys…Tom, Terry, Brian F…..but something has to change and they’ve all had plenty of chances to figure it out.

I’m thinking Kueter should maybe redshirt. I suspect he could AA, but some of these low AA type guys are monsters and have no qualms doing cheap shit to injure their opponent. Obviously those types will always be there, and you don’t wrestle worrying about injuries, but it’s a man’s weight and he could use bulking up a bit and more mental prep. Just over a month ago we thought the gambling suspensions were going to be lessened.

Im giving myself a D + last night. Left early but sat in traffic for a long time, parked way too far away from the Palestra, didn’t get to our seats until midway through Wood’s match. Spent three and half hours in the car for maybe an hour and twenty minutes of wrestling. Got to be better next time.

Gabe is the one guy I'm most interested in watching. Really hoping that those on here that say he'll get the nod at 174 after this semester are right. I'd rather see him get a shot at his best weight.

Maybe I’ll take heat for this but with the adversity this team has faced in the last 12 months I think the staff needs to be commended at this point. Obviously last nights performance wasn’t what everybody would like. However, we lost 5 possible/likely all America candidates due to suspension. Add Nate Jeseroga’s change of heart. They’ve done everything possible to fill the gaps to this point and my fingers are crossed that the luck changes next semester.

Side note I think Gabe should go 174 this year to save the redshirt option for next year. Could be an even bigger logjam if Brands is back and Angelo Ferrari isn’t filled into 184. Kueter should go to if he’s healthy this year. No telling how long we have him.

I understand there was adversity with the suspensions. Curious why you think they need to be commended at this point.

The gaps they have are also long term gaps. I don't agree that they've done everything possible to fill them. Maybe everything possible that they are capable of. The 2nd best team in America should not have trouble filling gaps. They don't recruit well enough. They don't plan well enough. Many examples, but its kind of like the BF argument. Some will never agree, so lets agree to disagree. Who is going 125 next year? They knew Nate J. wasn't coming well over a year ago. Who is going to AA at 133 next year? Who is 141? Again, we aren't perfect. You could say we are as good as Okie State and Ohio State. But if the goal is to do better, we aren't doing everything possible. If that were the case, it would mean we can't catch PSU ever, and I don't believe that for a second.

They went out and got two AA transfers. Possibly have 2 more coming in next semester. They attempted to get Nagao and Truax and lost out to PSU. I’m not sure exactly when they knew Jeseroga was out for sure but it’s not like top 5 pfp 125 recruits grow on trees. I’m not sure how u expect them to replace that right away.

If you’re setting PSU recruiting as the standard then you’ll be upset for the foreseeable future. They are the hot hand. They have the best room, the best coaches, the best RTC, the most money. Iowa was set up 12 months ago to be a solid second and compete for titles.

I would like to see them get in the good graces at AWA however. They are churning out talent and Iowa is missing out.

At 133 I would think Ayala would be a candidate to move up and be solid. He’s tall and looks sucked. Could be the reasons for his lack of power and stamina.
