50-0 over the Lock Haven Flounders.
Nolf and Nickal were very impressive. Nolf had a 1st period pin and Nickal got a TF with 3 takedowns in the last 30 seconds. Even the freshman emergency HWT recruit, Johnson, who has been wrestling all of 2 weeks won. Rasheed, who beat out Hammond, last year's starter, won in 35 secs by injury default. Gulibon was the only semi-weak result with a close win. Next is vs Virginia Tech Sunday at 1:00, video on FLO.

Full video. If you'd like to see a tons of pins and TFs.

Neff was an AA last year at 149 and Gulibon and AA last year at 133. Pretty decent win for Gulibon, although Neff doesn't seem to be as good at 141, at least thus far.

I watched the entire meet. Penn State is very good and Lock Haven is very very bad. Iowa and Oklahoma State would have done the same thing to them. 141 was the only competitive match and Neff did nothing. Gulibon took all the shots and forced all the action. I thought Nolf looked a little sloppy. We'll learn a lot more about their team after tomorrow

PSU is a damn tough team. No one doubts that. I am going to hold judgement on rankings until after the scuffle and midlands. Early season match ups (today not withstanding) are blow offs. Did anyone expect PSU to not blow it out today? Really.

Until more of the ranked guys meet, the rankings and hype mean squat. They will win tomorrow convincingly but they will not blow every match out. VT has 4 or so for real guys.

VT is a very good team in Blacksburg with a solid coach. PSU will win but it will be closer than expected!

PSU is by far my least favorite college team, but they are going to put a beating on VT. Tech will give them hell in a few matches, but PSU is loaded up and down their lineup. The only match that I don't see PSU being in is at HWT.

Never all that impressed with Guilibon. Mega was OK. Could have easily won that.

Zain looked great. Nolf was impressive. Looked like a 4 time AA and potential future champ.

Wow. McFadden took Rasheed down about 3 times in the last minute to tie and then took him down in about 20 sec in OT.

Nickal also looked great. Unfortunately another freshman looking like a 4x AA and potential future champ.

I would have laid you some great odds on that one after two. I did not think 165 would end that way as sluggish as McFadden looked.

The forfeit kinda sucked!
agreed but The injury to Nevills sucks more and Johnson is a True freshman who was playing football 3 weeks ago. I understand why Cael did that, but It is disappointing we have to forfeit a weight class in any situation.

I was very impressed with Nickal's athleticism. He was just too quick and explosive for Epperly
Jammenz has been crapping all over Nickal (over ranked, hasn't beaten anyone, etc).

He needs to worry about the Gophers. They are getting hammered today.

Lots of upsets, 2 of Penn States #2 guys go down. Both of VT's #3 guys were dominated by Penn State freshmen. Who saw Nickal over Epperly?

Another example of people counting chickens before they hatch. It's a long season and Penn State isn't invincible. A lot of people crowning Mega before the season started

Especially at a stacked weight class like 125. Nico could win it, no doubt, but he could also end up low on the podium. The same goes for Gilman, and really any of the top 125-pounders. It's a meat grinder of a weight class.

Agree. I was looking to see if Gulibon was head and shoulders above the other top guys here, and that is not the case. I'm very concerned about Nolf and Nickal for the next 4 years.

I saw Bo over Epperly:
  • Bo wrestled Brown almost every practice last year, so he is not going to wrestle anyone stronger this year
  • Bo lost to Brown as a true freshmen by the score of 10-7 early last year. Those 7 points were the most scored on Brown all of last year
  • When you consider that the greatest improvement is generally from true Freshmen to Redshirt Freshmen, you have to consider Bo as a serious challenger for the crown. So the win didn't surprise me at all.
Before you call me a homer, I only made one prediction in our board thread: I picked Gulibon to lose to Chishko.

I know this doesn't mean much to you guys, but the biggest match of the night was heavyweight. Jan Johnson is wrestling only because of injuries. Two weeks ago he was playing football. For those of you that have played and/or coached both sports, you have to consider Jan's win as being exceptionally gritty.

I know that the hard core Iowa wrestling aficionados on this board can appreciate that type of performance.
