When Iowa wins by 24 and a lot of the fan base isn't happy.
Look, folks, it was Week 1. Yes, Iowa played a very vanilla scheme on defense. And yes, there are things that need to be corrected and will be. But there were also a lot of positives shown on defense as well.
Also, I do think Josey Jewell getting tossed had a significant impact on the defense (yes, duh), but particularly in terms of leadership. If he is the quarterback of the defense (how would Iowa have looked on offense had Beathard been out?), and he was out nearly the entire game, and Iowa surrendered 21 total points, well, you know...I'll take it. And again, Iowa was in a base defense the entire game. No Raider package, blitzes, stunts, etc. That was intentional.
Oh, and we'll see how things play out of course, but this is year 3 of Miami's current coaching staff's regime. By the end of the season, we may come to realize just how much of an improved team they are from last year.
Oh, one more thing, the WRs for the most part looked pretty good. I think questions about J. Smith were answered yesterday. I think Iowa fans are going to like this team.
