Phoenix Mercury release Caitlin Clark promotion for Indiana Fever game - before WNBA draft

Do you understand what a standard deviation is? Surely you do. Look at that green dot. Look at it. She has to be 69 standard deviations from the norm. Maybe 420.
Sure. She was much better than everyone else this season.
You think that's the sole factor in why people tuned in as never before? Because she was much better on offense that the other players this season?

You're still not very good at reading for content.
You don't think any of the 'salty pros' aren't thinking that?
You can argue if it's valid, but I'll bet my house that some certainly are.
I've already explained why they're salty.

1) They're jealous of the attention she's getting and the money she's making.

And to a lesser extent, 2) They're mad that Caitlin's team knocked their team out of the tournament.

You suggested that the reason so many fans started watching Caitlin is because she's white. Kelsey Plum is white and no one gave a shit when she set the scoring record, so it seems like we can rule out skin color as the primary reason for Caitlin's popularity.

Maybe it's style of play. Maybe a lot of people heard about this girl from Iowa who routinely drains jumpshots from the logo and fires pinpoint get-ahead passes on the fast break. Maybe they tuned in to see for themselves and realized "Wow, this is entertaining basketball!".

I have no idea. It’s not like white basketball players are that popular, relatively speaking. Cuts both ways, I would surmise.

I mean, what else meaningful can be said?

I'm saying that some of the salty pros probably believe race is an issue in the recent hype.
Diana Taurasi has made it clear that she thinks Paige Bueckers is a better player than Caitlin Clark and will be a better WNBA player. Paige Bueckers is just as white as Caitlin Clark, so the difference isn't skin color.

Do you suppose it might have something to do with the fact that Bueckers plays for the same college team that Taurasi played for?

I will add one more factor, and it is/was one of her Nike slogans: you can too. She’s not 6’6 and she doesn’t dunk. She shoots with ridiculous range and has ridiculous passing. But most little girls and boys out there probably think that they could do the same with enough practice. Kind of like Steph curry and boys and girls.

Maybe. And maybe some are salty for the reason I stated.
I think it’s an interesting question as to why it blew up now. It’s been entertaining ball for years. But when the star was Griner the comments were just about how she looks manly and that a middle school boys team would beat them.

Inverse black swan event (white swan event?)

It's about breaking glass ceilings, it's about making the old guard uncomfortable, it's about time!

And those salty about it are struggling amongst the self hate bait, yearning for yesteryear, a last bastion of self own if you will. Never looking into a mirror, just keyword validations from less and less facebook friends over time. Old dusty books, withering away in a corner, irrelevant. Afraid of what is yet to come, grasping at straws, a lifeline, anything, a tv guide laid close to a plaid recliner. A tale as old as time. And you won't believe what happens next.

No. Of course not. It was because she's been much better on offense than the other players for three years.

Sure the women’s game has been entertaining, but not at the level it is now. It has seen nothing like Caitlin. As others point out she drains ridiculous, often well contested logo 3’s and her assists are legendary. She is fiery on the court, but gracious and charming off it. Hawkeye fans have been blessed to watch her for the past four years and, simply put, she is a once-in-a-generation player.

It’s not different than Tiger, or Nicklaus, or Bird, or Magic, or Brady or Mahomes. People love to watch greatness and I wouldn't read anything more into it than that.

So greatness doesn’t require titles anymore? I’ll remember that the next time the Jordan/lebron argument comes up again.

Heck, I agree. I just like consistency.

Lots of great ones never won titles -

Ted Williams
Ty Cobb
Dick Butkus
Gayle Sayers
Dan Marino
Ernie Banks
Charles Barkley
Barry Sanders
Elgin Baylor
Carl Yastrzemski
Barry Bonds
Walter Payton never won in his heyday

I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make there. Those guys both have multiple titles.

I think it does at the pro basketball level where you have significant parity. In D1 you have major disparities and you can’t blame that on one of the players. Women’s BB in particular has this issue with U Conn, SC etc having just massively better recruiting over many years.

What Caitlin did was elevate a group of above average (but in most cases not elite) D1 players to take on teams stacked with highly ranked elite recruits. It is not her fault the team lacked the depth and talent of SC. Should the greatness of an individual athlete be measured by factors outside her control?

I agree, and I would add that we're talking about 4 years in college, not a decade plus professional career. It is amazing what she did in 4 years given what she had to work with, compared to South Carolina and other teams.

I am not about to go on a deep dive of posts in 2023 and 2024, but come on.
Come on what?
People got mad last year when I said that Reese wasn't a thug.
People got mad this year when I said that officating was bad at the end of the LSU game.
That's it.

You have certainly denigrated her accomplishments in this thread by stating the hoopla is less about how well she has played and more about her race.
I didn't say that at all.
People were discussing the salty pros and I said some of them might see it that way.

Yes, you did say that. You didn’t just say that others might see it that way. You suggested it IS that way.

So you think assists are what drew national attention when others didn't get the same? Ok.”

“Anyone ever consider that race is involved? No one cared who had the scoring record or who won games in women's BB until a white girl became a star for doing it”

When trolling, you need to own it, not be coy about it.

Learn the difference between statement and question.
Then come back.
And go ahead and just leave the rest of the comments out to better your argument. 🤷‍♂️

A lot of it is older players being jealous of all the attention she’s getting and all the money she’s making. And some of it is former UConn players like Taurasi being salty that Iowa knocked the Huskies out of the Final Four.

She's not the first to set the record. But things were different this time. Why? Because mainstream America was tuning in. Why now?
If you were a former player who played to empty arenas wouldn't you be a bit salty?

Gee, it's almost like you stripped the context on purpose.

Griner didn’t look, move, sound like a female. I still think a good high school boys team wins, but the gap is closer than it was.
