Pico, MMA, with TV interview

Wow! I was a three time City of Chicago Park District finalist, one time champ. As a wrestler,my best finish at Northwestern was fifth in the Illinois Open college wrestling tournament but in my 26 fights in the ring I never walked into an uppercut like that! Wow! He left himself wide open and doesn't present solid boxing awareness! He has got a lot to learn

Why do you make yourself the focus of every thread?

Any boxer will tell, the only time the right hand leaves the jaw for protection,is when you are gonna throw a forceful punch, which always starts from the legs. Freeman beat him to the punch, with a forceful punch, because Zach knew how to punch. Pico led with a soft, ridiculously soft right hand, which he paid for dearly. Bad coaching! The kid was coddled and got his clock cleaned! Wait till he fights a real good boxer! It will be lights out!

I blame his coaches!

Ok, you're literally spamming this thread now. You could have put your full fight analysis in one post. Also, you don't need to use an exclamation point in every single sentence. That diminishes the purpose of the exclamation point. Some of your analysis is good, but relax a bit man.

Pico, walked into a kick and punch! You don't know boxing if you think this kid knew what he was doing! The first kick by Zach almost landed also! Pico got beat to the punch cuz his right hand was way to slow and Pico was using his right hand to set up something vs throwing a punch! Any boxer will tell you, you can't leave your right hand out slowly like that! That's what the left hand jab was for! The thing I saw was Pico almost got nailed with the kick before for the same reason! Nasty job of coaching! Zach was 9-2 and 33 years old! They needed a guy who was 2-3 and 23 years old! Pico will be shellshocked for the next year, and is a lost cause in MMA!

I'm convinced you have everyone on this forum on ignore and you just enjoy reading your own posts. You're talking to yourself man.

Edit: Also, you should post a video of one of your fights. Or a video of you demonstrating fight techniques. I'd love to watch.

I was trashed somewhat(although, partially trolled also lol) in the "Pico in MMA, how will he do?" thread on my opinion that

A. His opponent was no joke. 8-2, went 5 rounds in a title fight loss for a top 5 promotion in the U.S in his previous fight.
B. Boxing credentials were impressive but bigger gloves changes everything defense wise when you're only dealing with these tiny 4oz. gloves. Also, no idea about his elbows, knees, kicks, etc.
C. Fighting pancration tourneys is not MMA. His wrestling credentials were tremendous as well, nearly making the Olympic Team last year. However, there have been plenty of high-caliber wrestlers transition to MMA and be out-wrestled by "lesser" wrestlers. Freestyle/Greco/Folkstyle wrestling is different than MMA wrestling, much more than people know. Just like hardcore wrestling fans know Freestyle and Greco have many intricacies that work for one and not the other and vice-versa.

My apologies for the long winded rant. I am not seeking anyone to eat crow for saying Pico was going to smoke Freeman. However, my last point in the previous thread was mocked as I said, "It's a whole nother ballgame once you're actually in the CAGE in live MMA combat in front of thousands of people. Everyone's a killer in the gym."

Hopefully, the HWC is in his future if he decides MMA just isn't for him... His potential in Wrestling seems higher than in MMA, at least based off that performance. He may very well still end up being a world champ, who knows. Go I.O.W.A!!!!

Chief, how you liking life in Iowa City? I miss living there. Always good to have another intelligent wrestling fan around the city and in Carver.

I really enjoy it...has the atmosphere of a small town but the amenities of a larger one. Love jumping in the car and exploring or hitting the lakes. My dogs got their first swim in out at Coralville. All of that and Arizona has been hitting some record highs...was 118 there today and a nice mid 70s here. Can't wait for football and of course, wrestling season to start. Probably going to Midlands this year.

Awesome, glad you're enjoying it. Football season/Fall is the best time of year in Iowa City. Michigan in Kinnick last year was insane. I made it down to Midlands once a few years ago.

Good points. He's young and definitely still has options in either MMA or wrestling. Someone on reddit was saying that Bellator has been paying Aaron Pico a salary for a couple of years now. I assume they'd give him another chance if he wants to take it. If not, like you said, let's get him in the HWC!

Don't mind your input...you are a legit dude who has been inside the ring. I guess that's why they usually slowly build fighters giving them progressively tougher opponents...even with Pico's creds. Have to walk before you can run. A buddy of mine had finally got his chance in the UFC on a pretty big card after years of kicking butt in Az. Was gassed by the end of the first round and ended up losing in a pretty boring fight.

with midlands not being on campus next year the between sessions will be different for sure. im also disappointed that isu wont be at midlands.

Iowa City with humidity still can't compete with Phoenix. Pretty sure that's the hottest city in the U.S. consistently.

maybe true, but ive walked down the vegas strip wearing jeans and a hooded sweat shirt when it was around 90* out in the morning. i wouldnt even think about wearing jeans and a hooded sweatshirt and walk however many miles the strip is with the humidity in ic.

You must be enjoying the milder weather, too. The last week or so has been absolutely spectacular. Our junior partner is an Iowa native and did his training in Phoenix. He and his wife could hardly stand two years in the heat down there. Couldn't wait to get back -- and they absolutely love it here.

Welcome home, chief! We'll see you around town soon, I'm sure.

True to an extent. But Pico lost due to eating the uppercut.
Agree with this. He was clearly out for a second after the uppercut and was in a tight guillotine before he had his wits back. Probably never really regained full awareness.

I'd say the jury is still out on his MMA potential. Even the greatest ones get caught now and then. But if it doesn't work out with Bellator or the UFC, would love to see him in the HWC, as some of you say.

Thanks. And yes, according to what I've read, he was in fact receiving a stipend of sort each month to help him with Wrestling costs until he was ready to fight for them. They signed him originally back in 2014, although I don't know for how long or amount they've been paying, so I'm assuming they'll definitely give him another chance if he wants it. However, he sure did love it the last time he was in CHA.

Thanks, Chief. Yea, they definitely threw him right into the deep end with the sharks. My 5th pro fight is July 28th at Hy-Vee Hall against a kid who's 2-1 which is exactly how it should is. My 2nd fight which is posted in the other thread was against a 5-1 kid, however he had not fought for a few years and it was his "come-back" fight so there were enough variables for the fight to make sense. And "Octagon Jitters" is REAL, just like "Ring Rust". That's awesome for your buddy he at least made it to the UFC and fought the full 15 minutes. What's his name if you don't mind me asking, Chief?

Matt Lucas...AA'd at UNC but got into the fight game late in his early 30s. Was always a tough scrapper though.

His options seem to be open, considering his age. No doubt he got paid a fortune to get signed up so early.

But he has to seriously wonder about his career choice now. Gave up HS and collegiate wrestling. He could well have been one for the record books, had he stuck to wrestling. Sure the $$$ he'll make in mma will dwarf anything he'll get in wrestling, but given all the hype, this debut, 24 sec tap out has to be a real blow to his ego and possibly his legacy.

Boxing is a much, much simpler sport than wrestling! I am a 100 percent certain I know what Pico is doing wrong, and there is no easy fix. He uses his right hand like a jab. Just watch his interview! It's all bells and whistles! The guy doesn't know boxing. Sure,Aaron is a world class wrestler, but he doesn't have a strong right hand. He's gonna get clobbered a few more times, before he hangs it up for good! All hype! Once you get clocked like he does,it only takes a few more before you get "punch drunk"! Pugalistic Dementia. Three or four knockouts and he willl be good for nothing! He needs to enroll in college asap, or he will regret his choices.

I don't think you're in a position to be diagnosing pugilistic dementia. It appears that you have a few screws loose yourself. Worry about yourself rather than trashing a 20 year old who's putting it all out there in real life while you're sitting on a forum. You are pathetic. Let me guess, you could have been an Olympic champ or an MMA champ, but you had a knee injury. You have no self-awareness at all.

Boxing is barbaric! College wrestling is borderline barbaric. MMA needs to be outlawed! Tantamount to riding a motorcycle without a helmet in a thunderstorm at night!!

I was a high school tennis player. Just shot a 40 today at Springbrook golf course in Naperville for nine holes ! Still, it is fun to play competitive sports. Even Randy Lewis is done wrestling.

This was my question as well. UFC almost always feeds potential high-end prospects a couple of cupcakes before matching them with a higher quality fighter. Admittedly, this doesn't always end well for said prospects, but at least they get a chance to get acclimated. Doesn't seem like Bellator did that, but maybe they don't have the depth. Fedor vs. Mitrone? Wanderlei vs. Sonnen. Those are some old washed-up fighters right there. Yeesh!
