So the Planet of the Apes series showed up on my HBO list, so I started watching them. What are your thought on the film series?

Planet of the Apes (1968) - Good flick, not great acting, but good enough plot to keep me interested.
Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) - Dear God! Good parts were a recycle of the previous film, the rest was terrible!
Escape from Planet of the Apes (1971) - Haven't seen (after the 1970 one, wasn't sure if they kept getting worse)
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) - Haven't seen (after the 1970 one, wasn't sure if they kept getting worse)
Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973) - Haven't seen (after the 1970 one, wasn't sure if they kept getting worse)
Planet of the Apes (2001) - Pretty solid movie, loads better than the original.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) - Decent film and necessary for the other two.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) - Really enjoyed this movie, builds well off the previous.
War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) - Enjoyed this one as well.

The 2001 version by Tim Burton is badly overrated in your list IMO. Burton was trying for something, but in my opinion missed badly.

the original movies are all worth one watch IMO, but the more recent trilogy blows them out of the water. I do hope they someday revisit that world with a sequel trilogy (post-caeser).

I haven't seen any of the post 1970s ones, so I can't comment.

In order, I'd rate the original series
Planet of the Apes
Escape
Conquest
Beneath
Battle

Beneath wasn't great and Battle was trash. The 1st was a classic, Escape was really far fetched, but at least entertaining, Conquest was the most politically in your face.

It was the first one I ever saw, aside from occasionally stumbling across them Saturday afternoons as a kid, only to get up when the first commercial hit and go outside to play.

Not listed in this is their attempt to create a TV series off the movies.

I don’t hate any of the original series - I don’t know how well received the later ones were. I find them watchable but that’s about it, they suffer more from the problem that any long running franchise has - it just went too long.

Geez, I forgot about the TV show. It was sometime around 74-76, wasn't it? Maybe half a season IIRC.

It's listed up there in the lower section:

  • Optional: Planet of the Apes (1974 - TV series)

Me-TV was running it for a while on the Saturday Night Red Eye Sci-Fi so it came on at like 3 or 4 AM.

I'm not a huge fan of this movie, either, but I give it kuddos because it is the most loyal to the original novel - An Earthling travels to another planet to find that humans have destroyed themselves and allowed apes to take over, then comes back to Earth to find that the exact same thing has happened there (The ape from the other planet "beating him there by several generations and leading the revolution" is kinda silly, though, and probably worthy of the criticism it has received.

The original one is good, the rest of them not so much. I enjoyed the Tim Burton one. Haven't sat through any of the new ones from start to finish but seemed OK

Just terrible

did not like the 2001 reboot. I really liked the last run of movies but expected more. I watched the originals hundreds if times in the 80s.

I actually saw Planet of the Apes in the theatre downtown Burlington. I was surprised to see it was that long ago. I guess my parents drove me, but I don’t remember that part…
