Players hate the NIT btw

I'll play the contrarian. It would not shock me at all that at least some of the players would rather the season end (and I don't think that necessarily makes them bad players). They have incredible demands on their schedules and their every move analyzed on message boards. It is not a weakness to crave some down time. They have an entirely different take on many things than fans do.

I always look forward to the TV show where they announce the NIT brackets. The excitement on the players' faces makes it all worthwhile.

Still remember the Dev Marble interview after his senior season on this very website's podcast. I was surprised he made it abundantly clear he did not want to go on the prior summer's European trip.* He said that normally August was his only chance to go home for more than a couple of days, and he lost his opportunity to do it that year.

NIT springboard facts: None of last year's NIT final four teams will make the NCAA's this year. (And only one of the final four from '15 will make it this year). But, three of the four '16 quarterfinal losers will make it this year. So, maybe you just want to get your feet wet.

*I am aware that a couple of the seniors on this year's women's team list their European trip as their best Hawkeye memory.

Alford era players.
I thought Steve loved all "March situations."

Pierre Pierce, OK, maybe not the best player to use as an example, confirmed how he felt about the NIT in our LSU NIT loss. I remember an LSU player had a technical foul called on him for slapping the backboard. A call you don't see very often. Roughly, two minutes later Pierce picked up the same technical because he felt compelled to prove "I can jump higher than you can." Still one of the dumbest things I have seen an Iowa basketball player do.

(Old Gaelic sayings) Chan eil h-uile facal sireadh freagairt. Better a good retreat than a bad stand.

OP claim for this is coming from Steve Alford era players saying it. Wow that was only a decade ago. Sure it had nothing to do with the guy in charge.

I've always thought not all NIT invitations are created equal. It's huge for a young team.

Agree hawkcub, last years team would not have near as much to gain as this years team.

Let me get this straight... you start a thread about NIT player interest citing a few players from over 10 years and 3 coaches ago?

Sounded pretty universal to me.
But go ahead and think these kids would rather practice more for a meaningless tourney than... well, be college kids.

News alert: Spring break is for high schooler's and off the cuff college nerds using mommy and daddy's money to get away from mommy and daddy, hoping to get drunk and their first lay.

Says the guy who probably went home to Keokuk for Spring Break.

So much for Spring Break. Now they have to stick around and practice for a tourney they don't care about.
Hope next yr Hawks can make the dance.

Calling BS on this one. Maybe this is your opinion but you have no clue about this years team continuing to want to play ball. A younger team like this Iowa team more likely to be excited for nit compared to a team full of upperclassman.

These guys are going to be playing basketball one way or the other. I'll bet they would rather have actual competition vs. just shooting or weightlifting.

Kids like to win for winnings sake.

Alford players hated the NIT because they didnt get to the NCAA...'but 3 out of 8'..
making a blanket statement that this years team will as well based on players' attitudes of 10-18 years ago is a real stretch.

2nd....this a real young team..many of them have not been to the NCAA...I have a feeling at least the freshman are excited to play...I know Nicholas Baer will be (wasnt his old self last game).

No it would be stupid, but keep up the cluelessss Jok bashing fools

Actually it makes allot of sense.

Joks played in 3 ncaa tourneys, I can't imagine him giving a chit about the nit.

The only reason to play these games is for building twoards next year.

Let the guys who will be here next year have the experience.

I loved the NIT run to the finals and it was obvious the team and Fran wanted to win every game and celebrated after each win like it meant something. The tournament hurt but I'm going to be excited for the NIT.

One of the best atmospheres I've seen at Carver was an NIT game a few years ago vs Dayton.
Some great highlights in that game, too.

I'm guessing in preseason this team had a goal of playing postseason and they are so to think any of these kids won't show up for NIT including Jok is wrong.

Time will tell on this one. Level of effort on the court will determine their desire to be in the tournament. I'm more curious as to the fan support (crowd size) should CHA host a game or two. The University would be wise to offer incredibly low-price tickets to the students.

so your answer is NO....i thought so.
Look bob, I've been around awhile, I don't often bash players/coaches/program. Actually, most know I defend it quite a bit, sometimes to a fault. However, Jok's lack of hustle on certain plays and sometimes halves this year was atrocious to watch. He was bad against Indiana, like he didn't care. Digging deeper into this, after Jok had a great game earlier this year(Purdue), he gave all thanks to his personal coach in Minnesota for helping him. Not Fran, no credit to his teammates, some random personal trainer in Minnesota. I thought that was a low blow to other involved in the Iowa program. Hopefully he cares in the NIT. Otherwise, good riddance Jok.
