Plus - Garza of course.
P. McCaffery - he is going to be fun to watch
K. Murray - very surprised. Looks good and love his tenacity.
Everyone else ok about what you would expect.

Minuses -

C. McCaffery - not one of his better games, especially on defense. Not worried about him though. He will come through when needed.

Joe T. - still playing out of control. Not worried about him either. He will get better.

Overall, I was disappointed in how many layups we gave away - again! Especially baseline layups. This has to get better if we are going to get where we want.

Not bad for a first game. Things to work on.

one game against a bad opponent. Defensive intensity very lacking. Not much else to take out of this.

I hate to say it but I thought uhlis looked better in his limited minutes than Joe T today.

Overall, it was a respectable first game. Obviously, a lot to work on, but overall about what you'd expect.

I was actually encouraged by what I saw. This Iowa team is never going to be good defensively, they just don't have the lateral quickness. I do expect (hope) the defensive intensity improves, but I have no expectation of Iowa being good defensively. With that said, Iowa out rebounded NCC by double digits. Yes, it was NCC, but rebounding was a problem last year, and this year I think (hope) Iowa has the size and length to be more competitive on the glass.

If Iowa can rebound better this season, it will make up for not being good defensively. If they can, they're going to win a lot of games.

I was questioning the rebounding. Consider me needing to see more results before I in. The defense glass in particular was an issue.

Defense will always be a concern with FM leading the team and his offensive style. Just can’t give up easy layups and three pointers.

Very happy with PMac. Last time we saw him, he was athletic but very raw. He seems to be a lot more polished from a year ago. His shot still looks quite awkward though.

Also Keegan looked very good as mentioned. Ulis on the FT line could win some games a few years down the line.

I too liked the look of Ulis bring bringing the ball up the court and did well defensively. IIRC, he had a nice lob to Perkins who missed the oop.

Really not a quality enough opponent to draw many conclusions. We came out flat, and didn’t have crisp ball movement or high defensive intensity early on. I would say that Pat, Keegan, and Ulis all proved that they belong today. Otherwise, 1-0, and a spread covered which I made a few bucks on. Good way to enter the Thanksgiving weekend. Time to kick some Husker ass and then hit 2-0 on the hardwood after

+
Garza's step back "Dirk" jumper
Perkins Dunk
PMac Energy and Activity, Wow
Keegan Rebounding, 3 Point Shooting and Overall play
Quality depth vs. YAG
Added Individual defenders in Ulis, PMac, Perkins, Murray Twins, maybe Ogundele

-neutral/as expected-
Garza low post game and effort
JoBo shooting
CJF Overall

At least hey were their regular season champions in the MEAC.

Missed it but did any of the frosh look like they will help defensively?
Patrick is an absolute terror heading the top of Iowa’s full court press. First time he got in the game they tried tossing it across the court over his head and he sprung up, grabbed the ball, and took it the other way (missed the finish, but that’s neither here nor there)

Keegan Murray will help from a rebounding standpoint. Ulis looked solid defensively as well, against reserves

I wish they would stop the full court press and just settle in defensively. I think they get caught too many times having to run back and another team beating them down. I would like to seem them do that a couple of games and see what happens.

Overall a good opener. Turned on the jets after a somewhat listless start.

Defense remains the biggest struggle. Too may blow bys and slow to help/rotate. Not closing out on shooters. We all know, and so do their opponents, the D will be what they struggle with all season.

With the caveat that it's the first game against an inferior opponent, I saw a team that has offensive firepower all over the place.

I agree and would add that both Patrick and Keegan appear to have some shot blocking ability. Both players run the court very well for their size and Patrick looks like he will be picking up a couple extra hustle baskets and/or steals if he gets 20 minutes.

I think Iowa has the opportunity to have some of the best rim protection/shot blocking it’s had in some time. Nunge is going to be a great shot blocker as well. His freshman year, he was third on the team in blocks per game, despite being eighth in minutes. Something to be excited about as we all know Iowa needs to improve on the defensive end

After watching pmac....big bro and jbo had better bring it or we might head to a bigger starting lineup :D

I’m not reading any previous posts yet. I watched Iowa and the MSU game. Iowa can get beat with quickness and poor defense. MSU has some athletes that will blow right by Iowa defenders, NCC did at times with ease. Iowa can score too, just differently. It was just an observation on the two BIG teams.

Gotta tighten up the D. You could tell they really didn’t care about defense today, but I think it’s a waste to not work on it when you suck at it.

This crew is never going to be a great team defensively. CJ and Joe will be good at stopping the ball but the backside of the D is going to be just OK.

Fortunately, the Hawks do not need to play great team defense because our opponent's are going to be gassed chasing Hawkeye boys around.

Agree with others that Keegan is the best of the true freshmen. Ulis looks like he belonged. Perkins needs to finish better, but I saw a little bit of World B. (aka Lloyd) Free in his game. I like his upside.

Iowa went deep and didn't lose any ground once they pulled away. They need a little more intensity out of the gate though but UNCC was controlling the tempo until they fell behind and got in Iowa's game.

This is the year, but I feel pretty good about the following years after seeing some of the younger guys. There is going to be a lot of length on the future teams.

Patrick, Keenan, & J.T. > then Pemsl, Evelyn, & Till.....how many games will that translate to game wins? Can't hurt....

I think NCC was a pretty respectable first opponent, but given their problems with COVID, I would have expected the Hawks to dominate a little more than they did. I was especially impressed with PMac and Keegan. PMac will be a major contributor. If JoeT, doesn't play better than today, Ulis will challenge him for time. We need Nunge to get back on the floor, because Big O is too big and has a lot of work to do before he can contribute.

The press, just like Dr Tom’s teams, isn’t always meant to steal the ball. Sometimes you get beat. We were sluggish and it sped the game up. That is the purpose sometimes. Obviously you’d take a steal but we like a faster pace. And it worked. First game and all, Patrick is far and away the biggest surprise. Joe W better keep his head up and play or he will be the one losing minutes to Patrick. And Bohannon hopefully will look better on D. But not really counting on that.

It was so fun to watch and so many positives. But defensively I didnt see any improvement. If you watch great defensive teams they guard so aggressively - up close and in the opponent’s face. I don’t understand why Iowa plays off the offensive player/opponent a couple of feet.
