I remember in year's past someone would carry it. I believe we have had Iowa recruits play in the past.Probably no TV. They scrambled to get this game together just in the last 2 weeks. Longest running high school all star game, but they lost their venue.
Ray Slater played in the 1989 game. Hopefully Patrick has a better Hawkeye career.I remember in year's past someone would carry it. I believe we have had Iowa recruits play in the past.
I actually took the time to watch some of the game. I "fast forwarded" through the parts where Patrick wasn't playing; I likely missed some of the time that he was playing. Of course, this was nothing more than a glorifed pick-up game. This was the first time I've seen Patrick aside from a few "highlight" videos. So, with those qualifiers...
I generally was pretty impressed with his game...
Played within the flow of the game better than most other (if not all) participants, a few crisp assists, at least two boards crashing from the wing, a couple of nice drives culminating in a couple of mid-range pull up buckets, ran the floor well beating the defense for two dunks, hit a 3 ball, and most importantly pretty quick on outside perimeter defense & contained his man very well - I don't recall him getting beat off the dribble even once from the wing.
Areas of improvement seemed to be taking the ball to the rack harder and more often, tended to stay out on the outside and not "mix it up a lot". The latter two may be okay since he projects to be a wing / SF type of player.
I honestly don't see why people aren't really excited about Patrick - 4 star, top 50 - 100 depending on the ranking service, 247 composite of .9709. I know, I know it's only a glorified pickup game but I think he's going to be really good!

I'll give you 3 options that negative Nancy's use. He's not a PG, he's white and he's a McCaffery.I actually took the time to watch some of the game. Agreed. Good weight. Strength! But Patrick is already a pretty good athlete and basketball player, he just needs to be able to handle the rigors of the B1G.Patrick is really good. Hes very skilled and he will be a nice addition. He needs to put on some weight but he will be an asset from the git go.

Sometimes too much.Nice. I always value your opinion @Suterman. You seem to watch quite a bit of ball.

I've seen very little of PMac but what comes to mind when I watch him is Draymond Green. Sort of in the right place, right time, good at a lot of things but not great at any one thing, not offensively-minded in looking for his own shot or creating his own shot, but offense runs more smoothly with him on the floor—doesn't hold on to the ball. Gets it, does something with it. And can do some things on defense with length and IQ.Sometimes too much.
Don't see the Green comparison. Reminds me of Jim Bartles. Hopefully the pieces fit such that his current strengths are highlighted while he develops.
Green is basically a do-everything utility guy. So, potentially anyway, similar to Green, but thin and white.Don't see the Green comparison. Reminds me of Jim Bartles. Kind of a do everything utility guy on the thin side.
My guess is most of the negativity surrounding PM has more to do with his last name then his game. You’ve got a kid who beat cancer and was rated top 100. He won’t live up to the unreal expectations some have, but he’s a solid recruit for the Hawks.
If Pat ends up even close to Draymond Green we will all be very happy.I've seen very little of PMac but what comes to mind when I watch him is Draymond Green. I don't mean to suggest I believe PMac will have a good-great NBA career. I'm comparing their games, their (prospective in PM's case) roles for their team. PMac seems like a guy who does a lot of things well, nothing great, but sort of makes things run smoothly with high-IQ basketball, right place, right time, etc. Is this the type of role you anticipate for PMac?If Pat ends up even close to Draymond Green we will all be very happy.
Yes, without the PTL we have no way of predicting future superstarsI don’t totally see the Green comparison. Pat is more offensively skilled at this stage of development. I see Pete Maravich, but I also thought Andrew Fleming was going erase years of hawkeye basketball misery based upon my keen PTL observation.
And here we are with yet another example of how making a comparison is not necessarily intent on predicting equal success or equivalence in any way. It's simply an attempt to contextualize. The whole point of making a comparison is to illuminate similarities (and/or differences).Yes, without the PTL we have no way of predicting future superstars
I understand your point. I have seen Patrick play quite a bit and I don’t think he plays like Green and he is certainly not built like Green. But I get what you are saying that both are sort of utility, do a little bit of everything type of guys. I was just joking about the PTL because someone would constantly remind us that you can’t use PTL performances to draw any conclusions. And here we are with yet another example of how making a comparison is not necessarily intent on predicting equal success or equivalence in any way. But whatever. I know disagreeing and flaming is fun. Even though you and I aren't really disagreeing. My original suggestion is that PMac seems to be a do-a-little-bit-of-everything guy, using Green—because most basketball players are familiar with his skill set and role—as the comparison. Apparently this is a comparison with which we generally are in agreement given this is how you described Bartels. I was on the damn team with Bartels, so cool comparison. Could be said that Bartels served a similar role, while not as prominently, as Green. Good at everything, not great at anything, long and athletic to affect the game on both ends in a lot of ways.
Gist is that Green is sort of a hub type player on the offensive end. It looks like PMac might be that kind of player, a "point-forward" sort of player, a guy more natural making plays for others than for himself.
And I'm not declaring this comparison is apt given I've seen very little of PMac. Thus asking Suterman to chime in.
I still say that Patrick's game reminds me more of Robbie Hummel's. Patrick needs to get a lot stronger but they both have good court vision and anticipation, and both were/are above-average ball handlers/shooters. I can only hope that Patrick can improve like Hummel did, but without the injuries. For comparison purposes I think Keith Van Horn would fit the bill when talking about PMac. I like Patrick’s game and think he’s going to have a good career at Iowa.
I think Joe W plays 30 minutes a game leaving 10 minutes for Patrick. If Patrick is playing well maybe he gets 15 minutes. Just my guess.I think PMac gets 6 man minutes next year. He's unlike any player currently on the roster. Can shoot he the 3, leap out of the gym and handle the ball. I get the weight concerns but he will be playing the 3 and if he is asked to play the four it will be when we go zone or he's guarding a 3/4 tweener. He will be a nightmare at the top of the press and a great secondary rebounder.
He's going to be great in transition too. Put me in the camp of expecting a lot right away from Patrick.
He's in the same plain as Joe W and Cook as a freshman. He's ranked as high for a reason.
