A lot of options there, and it’s really tough to make an argument that any one of them isn’t the right decision. Personally, I went with the third, although most of the others I could be talked into pretty easily.

Every time a thread like this comes up the first thing that immediately comes to mind is what a sh!t job Barta did. Incompetent at the basic management functions of the position and terrible at contract structuring/negotiations.

Agree if they have a good idea who they're going after, otherwise you might have a smaller list of potential candidates who've already been taken off the market.

This. I actually think that Gary Barta, perhaps the most ineffective and clueless AD in college sports history, would actually be smart enough to get rid of Fran. I just thank the Lord that he won’t be hiring the replacement.
NO. Program suicide if you wait. Transfer portal and Head coaching candidates will become scarce by April 1st. Would be the dumbest move to wait 3 weeks so you can save a little$
Agreed. You could just announce on March 10 that you will be parting ways with him, effective April 1. He keeps getting paid until then, then gets his buyout. In the meantime, you get your coaching search underway.

I haven't watched a lot of men's hoops this year, but I assume he is still doing color commentary on BTN for most Iowa games. Must be downright painful for him.

And with Fran gone, I hope Beth requires the new coach to schedule both Drake and UNI every damn season. Those are two very good basketball programs, and despite what happened at Cedar Falls years ago, there is no excuse for refusing to play the other two in-state schools, one of which will be in the NCAA tournament while Iowa sits at home and recalls their great victories over New Hampshire and East Texas A&M.
You know that scheduling uni and drake can only be at carver....if they agree to that..fine.

Jess did a few earlier in the year. It would be painful for him and more painful for whoever had to listen to him trying to tell you how great Iowa is while getting killed.

Yep I'd like to see those games come back. They were always fun. If Iowa can't beat those teams on the road, then the program just needs to do better.
That mindset is what caused Fran to kill the program.
Gotta have those home games to draw 3000 against New Orleans. Those really pay the bills.
Iowa should not have to play road games at Drake or UNI…..they should come to Carver.

Ben McCollum just led Drake to their first outright MVC championship in 17 years with essentially a brand new team. Combine that with his multiple D2 national championships and being an Iowa native to boot, to me it's a no-brainer that Beth should go get him. He's Bo Ryan Part Deux (minus being a complete a$$hole).
If Iowa losses out and does not make the B1G tournament, how soon would Beth confirm if Fran will be back?
Last regular-season game is Sunday, March 9.
If we do indeed miss the BTT, I would be disappointed if we didn't have news by EOD Tuesday, March 11.
If we sneak into the BTT, I would expect news within 48 hours of our last game.
The only thing that would hold her back is the buyout doesn't drop to $4.2M until April 1st. So I could see a scenario where we don't hear anything until then.
That would be a mistake. If the intent is for Fran to be let go, then it is idiotic to wait until April 1 just to save a few bucks. The candidate list will have dropped significantly with the “best” already being taken. You also risk missing out on McCollum.
But, this is the University of Iowa, so it wouldn’t surprise me in the least.
