The only thing that would hold her back is the buyout doesn't drop to $4.2M until April 1st. So I could see a scenario where we don't hear anything until then.
I'm hoping that Beth already more or less has her mind made up and is just waiting for the season to end, and it's not some scenario where if Iowa somehow were to sneak into the BTT quarterfinals or semis, or something, that it saves Fran for another year. I also REALLY hope that if Beth is going to make a move, that she doesn't sit on her hands for 3 weeks waiting for the buyout to drop, while other schools are busy making moves.

For reference, Iowa played it's last game on 3/11 in 2010, and Lickliter was fired on the 15th (a Monday):

No way will she sit around while every other program is finding their new coach just to save a little $. My guess is that the buyout has already been renegotiated and will be effective March 10th or 17th, and she's already working her short list.

Exactly. She can announce plans to move on anytime she wants to. She could announce tomorrow. She could have announced a few weeks ago, like Indiana did. Fran might be on contract (and get paid) until April 1, but the coaching search can begin anytime.

A greater factor that could delay a new hire will be if the guy we want is still coaching a team in a post-season tournament.

I never indicated she wouldn’t be doing her thing to get a new coach. I’m just saying we may not actually hear anything until then. I don’t know offhand what the buyout difference is, but if it’s another year at $1.4M, it might take some creativity cuz that’s not an insignificant amount of money. Especially with the $20.5M in rev share looming starting on 7/1.

Every time a thread like this comes up the first thing that immediately comes to mind is what a sh!t job Barta did. Incompetent at the basic management functions of the position and terrible at contract structuring/negotiations.
This. I do have to wonder if given the buyouts for Fran, (and Kirk if it comes to that) if firing him is above Beths pay grade. Would she need to get a sign off before making such a move? I know people are calling for her to "put her big girl pants on" and cut Fran loose, but I have to wonder of its even her decision at this point.

I don’t think affordability is a concern. Other schools manage to do it.

She’s the Athletic Director. If she doesn’t have the authority to hire and fire, why does the job even exist?

*If* Beth decides to part ways with Fran (and I am still not convinced she will), she must do it as soon as Iowa’s season is over. CANNOT wait until April 1 just to save a few bucks.

Then again…that would be so the University of Iowa thing to do.

Believe Max_Rebo described the out of having your cake and eating it too.
Agreed. You could just announce on March 10 that you will be parting ways with him, effective April 1. He keeps getting paid until then, then gets his buyout. In the meantime, you get your coaching search underway.

JFC. Not another one.

BG is going to announce the day after Iowa’s last game that Fran is terminated effective April 1. She will start interviewing candidates and may even have a new coach before Fran is officially off the books.

Fans thinking that this April 1 date is some kind of barrier or important threshold just aren’t thinking it through.

No need to wait. Do the deed now. Fire, retire, whatever. Get names of coaches and evaluate. Announce the new guy, build excitement with the donor base to pump up NIL giving. Start buying better players.

I would make the immediate change 100/100 times knowing that it is possible to rebuild excitement, improve attendance, increase NIL dollars, install a different recruiting strategy and achieve better results. We should be aiming for Big Ten titles and Final Four appearances. Not easy, but we need a leader who is innovative and determined.

That's what I like to hear: Hope!

Lolol. For Christ's sake. I know very well what her position is. If your saying that these buyouts have zero to do with those decisions then will just disagree. It should be pretty damn obvious that these things are considered.

This looks like an Agree to Disagree situation
