Polls, Rankings, etc

Kind of lazy for the AP to label #3 USC and #5 UCLA as “Pacific 12” conference teams.

Iowa should be ranked around #20-25 range IMO. The Hawkeyes lost a superstar and lot of starting experience but will have a solid upper class core and plenty of fresh Top100 talent. It feels like Heiden was a bit underrated - she could surprise and Lucy Olsen was a big time transfer. Can’t wait to see how JJ brings it all together.

Pre-season rankings mean nothing.

Sort of. Denying a program like Iowa, returning NC runner-up with a top-ten recruiting class and a solid group of returning players is a slap in the face.

Jan Jennsen is not a stranger to the coaching ranks. She was the lead recruiter. No recruit backed out.

I doubt you could find a comparable example when a returning NC runner-up was unranked pre-season. Rankings, including pre-season put programs on the map for all to see. Nothing matters more than publicity. Every day. Every month. Every year.

UCONN has had it for decades. Why would girls give their souls to play for that school on the East Coast?

Completely agree. It's a mixture of hate and just not paying attention.

Funny part is, they just indirectly are saying what CC did was even more impressive lol.

I don't buy the "hate" angle at all, and frankly I think Iowa fans play that card way to often. Who exactly "hates" Iowa? I'll give you that pollsters are ignorant and basically think that without CC22 this is not a competitive team. They'll learn as the year goes along......

Interesting Creme puts Missouri State in as the MVC automatic qualifier...they just lost to 1-4 UT Martin.
Probably has no idea Drake's 3 losses were at Creighton, at ISU and vs Iowa.
Missouri State rated #5 (out of 12 teams) in the MVC preseason poll.

In the latest Mid-Major Top 25 poll, they're at the end of the line as well for the better teams.
OTHERS RECEIVING VOTES: Missouri State 1

Collegeinsider | Women's Mid-Major Top 25

Creme has some justification as Missouri State is the highest rated in Missouri Valley Conference from this model. Plus, Missouri State has the best record in the Missouri Valley Standings so far. Seems he'd get the least amount of hate for choosing Missouri Valley.

Looking at the opponent's NET and RPI Drake's schedule dwarfs Missouri State's.
I see Missouri State's next three opponents are Gonzaga, Florida State and Texas Tech; this should give a better idea of their strength.
Common opponent: St. Louis. Drake won by 25 at home; Missouri State won at St. Louis by 23.
Of course they'll play each other twice during the regular season and perhaps a 3rd time in the conference tourney.

AP Poll finally has individual ballots out..
6 voters have Iowa unranked..

Among those
Emily Adams.. a Connecticut voter who had Iowa lower than everyone else all year last season
Reed Darcey.. a LSU voter
Roger Cleaveland.. another Connecticut voter.. not sure why they have 3 or 4 reps in the AP poll

Lolol.. shocking Conn. and LSU voters sticking it to the hawks. This is why the whole thing is crap at least until late in the year..

I guess Utah decided that getting beat by one team from Indiana was enough.

Edit: what was I talking about? Utah was previously beat by Northwestern, not Indiana.

So LSU beats a team by 87 points today? What kind of scriummages are they playing down there?

(NCCentral with one player listed over 6'0--a 6'2 girl that doesn't start.)

NCCentral had 4 at the half, yikes! On a rankings/quality note. Maryland is pretty legit and they beat Toledo today, 92-70.

Now before I do a comparison it’s worth noting Toledo has a solid program (27-6 last year) but they lost some girls and they have a new coach, so I imagine they’re better now than we played them in the second game.

With that said we beat them 94–57 and they shot 25% from the field and 22% from three versus 45% field-goal percentage and 35% versus Maryland.

I noticed Maryland's score against Toledo too.

If I'm reading this right, this guy releases his AP ballots early. He puts us up 5 spots so that's a good early indicator of our jump Monday morning.

Went looking for more reasons/accolades Jan can pitch to her prospects as a head coach to give confidence that Jan knows winning basketball. Came across this article.

Where does UConn women's basketball team land on Carl Adamec's AP Top 25 ballot
"17. Iowa (8-0): First-year coach Jan Jensen is the first to start their career with eight straight wins with the Hawkeyes, who face Tennessee at Barclays Center Saturday."

Carl Adamec's AP Top 25 ballot: Where's UConn ranked?
"Yours truly is also back for a 20th season as an AP voter, though for a first time as part of the Hearst Connecticut Media Group."

With the fire power we lost from last year and at the same our schedule is by no means remotely close to a creampuff schedule, this is helluva accomplishment for Jan and crew.

This upcoming game against TN could be a big one if we win. TN just pulled in the #2 recruiting class for 2025. A win against them could give us just enough edge to land future prospects in our column. Of course the rest of season will come into play for prospects decisions to consider us, however Jan is looking about the best you can so far in her early HCing career.

The first NET rankings of the year. Iowa comes in at #29.

I suspect we'd be higher if we had displayed more efficient showings against Rhode Island and Northern Illinois. Running up the score against bad teams really helps your NET (see LSU, Michigan State), and failing to do so can suppress your ranking.

Unlike many other ratings services, the NET incorporates no data from previous seasons. Every team starts from a blank slate. This can lead to some noisy results early on, but it has the benefit of not overrating or underrating teams that have gone through a coaching change or had a massive personnel overhaul. For example, I think Virginia Tech is more accurate in the NET (#54) than Massey (#36). Same with Kansas (NET #68 vs Massey #37).

Tennessee has played an absolutely crap schedule. The best team they have played by far is Middle Tennessee St and they beat them by 14.

We will win that game.

Another voter Eden Lasse has dropped us from 24 to 25 in her ballot.

Iowa St is 24th not sure the justification for Iowa state being higher.

She also put 5-2 SDakota St on for beating Oregon and Ball State.. you know who beat Oregon and S Dakota St? Undefeated Georgia Tech who she doesn’t have ranked. Quality losses outweigh head to head win I guess.

The first NET rankings of the year. Iowa comes in at #29.
Based on the NET, Iowa's resume is not impressive so far. Nearly all of our opponents are ranked lower at this point than at the end of last season. Hopefully our opponents have good seasons and move up.

This season is the first seasons that the women's tournament committee is evaluating resumes by quadrants.

Quad 1 (home 1-25, neutral 1-35, away 1-45)
Quad 2 (home 26-55, neutral 36-65, away 46-80)
Quad 3 (home 56-90, neutral 66-105, away 81-130)
Quad 4 (home 91+, neutral 106+, away 131+)

The ranges are narrower than on the men's side. Their justification is that the drop off in talent is more drastic.

Here is how our wins fall:

Quad 1: None.
Quad 2: Virginia Tech (#54 neutral)
Quad 3: Kansas (#68 neutral), BYU (#103 neutral), Drake (#113 away)
Quad 4: Washington State (#143 home), Rhode Island (#145 neutral), Toledo (#172 home), NIU (#227 home)

They need to make a quad 50 for the team LSU played yesterday..
Toledo and NIU are lower ranked but not to the extreme to some of these cupcakes others are snacking on multiple times.

I mean everyone agrees that LSU's schedule is pathetic but at the end of the day no one is giving us a gold star for scheduling "tougher" Quad 4 games. I'm just really relieved we pulled it together against Rhode Island because that would have been a disastrous loss.

Michigan State could jump into the rankings and perhaps pass Iowa this week. 2 Quad 1 victories last week. Sparty is a daunting first BIG game on the road.

The imperfect NET analytics are overrating all of MSU, Cal, and Vandy in my opinion, but the numbers are what they are at this point! I expect them all to drop over the course of the season.

I watched both MSU games last week. Look like a scary team for Iowa. Michigan State is top 10 in opponent turnover percentage. Will be interesting to see if Stremlow and McCabe can contribute against a team like that, and if Guyton can keep her turnovers to a minimum.

Tennessee is turning over its opponents to the tune of 30/game so far.

Yep and not only that, TN hasn't even played at a neutral site yet. Every game so far and including the FL St game on Wed are all played at home in Knoxville, TN Food City Center. Their first one away from home is against us at a neutral site in NY.

I like our chances as well with Lucy back and even if we had to play Guyton now, still think we're very competitive after Guyton gets one more full week of reps. They may not even be undefeated when they play us. Although, rather beat an undefeated TN. It just sounds better and helps boost the resume.
