Positionless basketball is clearly paying off

Wondering if the tune has changed for you? One game does not make a season but we looked better last nite than we have in a long time. Better players will always help but so will true team basketball. Our style of basketball will win a lot of games in the big and around college basketball, hope you can admit to it.

Agree, last night was a great team win. OSU looked disinterested, but a W is a W. I am glad to see Fran has finally recognized Kriener is good and needs to be on the court. Ellingson played a hell of a game and needs to keep shooting.

I think NW and IL were at one end of the spectrum and last night was the other end. Hope to see more same crisp ball movement Tuesday night. I agree that when Iowa gets good ball movement and isn't watching Jok, they are a much more dangerous team.

Wow i just read this thread for the first time this morning and all I can say is I wish I could have been jabbing some posters during the OSU game. What some people clearly dont understand is that we play in a conference (maybe you've heard of it) the B1G where all the teams want to win and recruit some very talented players to do so. What then occurs is that when good players play against each other, minor issues like illness, injury, inexperience are amplified. I think some people plainly just need to step up and eat some crow and not make a piss poor excuse like "OSU looked disinterested tonight." Wow

I believe Iowa has the talent to compete every game. What is missing is the effort and determination to give it 100% each and every game. Fran has lacked the abiltiy to instill that in his players to the point that they collapse at the end of some years. He needs to rectify that.

You're right. If we play better teams and just want it more, we will win them all.

No problem eating crow for the OSU win. I did not expect that performance without Jok, so great win.

It's the body of work that I am interested in. Fran came in talking about competing for Big Ten championships and making deep March runs. To date we have not won or competed for a holiday tournament championship, made it past the second round of the BTT, or not gotten our doors blown off in round 2 of the NCAA's. We did compete for the NIT championship, so I guess if your bar is low, that is some sort of accomplishment.

This is like arguing about Iowa football and why we can't get better WR's. Because we can't / won't throw the ball. For Fran to move the needle, we need an impact PG that can do what other impact PG's do to us. I hope I am served more crow if it equates to more wins.

A guy leading the BIG in 3 point percentage does nothing but miss threes? There are a lot of dumb****s on this board.

Yeah I was more referring to that 4 game stretch where he was 0-7 from 3 with eight total points, 4 of which on FTs.

He had a nice 1-1 effort from 3 against Maryland and then did nothing against Illinois.

But yeah he redeemed himself with that one game against Ohio State.

The folks on the board seem so to swing back and forth based solely on whether Iowa wins or loses. Winning and losing is important (they do keep score), but I'm more interested in how the team plays. The effort and activity on defense against OSU, along with the willingness to share and move the ball on offense, were outstanding. Those are the things that give me hope. If Iowa can do those things more games than not, the results will follow. Ellingson isn't going to go 5-7 from 3-point land every game, even when open. And Kriener isn't going to go 5-6 from the field each game. If Ellingson makes 2-6 from 3 against Rutgers, it doesn't mean he stinks. It just means he didn't make as many shots.

If Iowa plays with the same activity and effort on defense, and moves the ball on offense, it will have a decent shot at winning against Rutgers and Nebraska. Hoping to see Iowa control its end of the bargain.

Meanwhile those of us that thought this would be an erratic year with quite a few losses haven't been nearly so rattled by the performance.

Yes I dread what this will be like if Iowa loses to Rutgers tonight. Iowa is only a 2-point favorite and Rutgers just came off taking Wisconsin to OT on a neutral court. Hopefully Hawks can put a couple of good efforts together in a row here.

I think you misheard me. He's leading the BIG for the entire year. He's been Iowa's most efficient offensive player and the stats bear that out. He'll never be anything more than a role player but he's been damn good this year. This kid isn't Josh Ogelsby.

Rutgers might be wore out. Mentally and physically.

I truly
The problem is we are starting 3 shooting guards and 2 power forwards. 2 of the shooting guards had
the flu and bad back, but still start. The 2 power forwards have the basketball IQ of 5th graders and
have no clue about the fundamentals of basketball (dribbling, shooting, boxing out and god forbid playing defense.)
Our first players off the bench last night are a former walk on and 2 players who are D2 caliber players.
What's sad is the former walk on is the best of the bunch.

Our coach can't recruit a pg, which every other team we played against appears not to have this problem.
Our two best freshmen in the class got 6 & 11 minutes of playing time last night.
This is all on the coach. I was shocked that he actually took credit for the dumpster fire that he's
putting out on the court.
I agree that they're are several players that need to be "Creaned", but the problem I see you have
a coach that can't recruit a PG or SG that can break down defenses and create their own shots.

it baffles me how a really good point guad would not want to play in this offense? I get that he missed out on Paige, was close with Ulis and Moore but couldn't close the deal. Ulis would have been just what the doctor odered and would have been huge for the program. There were some shady recruiting requests being sent out by the Moore camp so I think it is understandable that that one didn't work out. I wasn't a huge Mike Gessel guy. Wonderful kid, average BT guard, in my humble opinion. What frustrates me is the fact that Fran knows he needs a game changer at PG yet he continues to recruit depth and often times unneeded depth at the 4 position.

I dont believe in "Creaning" but it may be in the best interest of the program to hit the road and find a freakin' true PG. Next year we will have 3 combo guards that aren't true point guards if Conor Mac makes it to campus or is not red-shirted. Therefore, I think he does nee to address it. Love JBo but there are a ton of minutes for him to play the 2 and 1. Williams could be a nice role player by his SR season, but he either did not develop as planned or should not have been offered ship.
