1.In my view, Mike Gesell is one of the top 3 point guards in the B1G and he showed it last night. Tum tum Nairn may not be an offensive juggernaut but I have seen him take over games with his quickness and ability to run the court and execute the fast break. Mike beat him to the rim at will. Mike made excellent decisions both on and off the ball. He plays within himself and become the scorer we need when it is called for. Otherwise he is a distributor and a quiet leader who is becoming more vocal.

2.I have heard talk that fran doesn't always win the "close ones". To me it is more significant that we beat good teams by double digits than we win a "close one". It shouldn't be close.

3. Although they let more contact go than I would prefer, the refs did not let Izzo's guys rough us up as they have in the past. Two hands on the body was pretty much an automatic whistle.

4.Looks like we fixed the getting the ball inbounds problem. This was not an issue and MSU applied intense pressure late.

5.Ahmad Wagner was a freshman playing Center and Power Forward and held his own. My goodness I can scarcely remember the last time we had a strong physical kid like this. I love love love his game and he is going to get so much better.

6.You simply cannot choose to NOT play hard when Baer is on the court or you will look like a fool. Nicholas is very valuable for this alone. When he entered the game for the first time last night the intensity racheted up about 10 notches.

7. Something HAS to be done about the lousy Whelan Security folks. When Uthoff was called for swinging his elbows late in the game, the crowd went nuts. We were told by security to calm down and be quiet. I guarantee the coaching staff does not want us to be quiet. Guess what happened? People sat down and stopped cheering. There is nothing wrong with enthusiasm and CHA personnel do all they can to eff up the enthusiasm from the crowd. Thank God for the students last night. They really helped. We could use a new PA announcer as well. The guy they have must do funerals or something because he sounds like a robot.

8. This Iowa team is a lot "tougher" than I thought they would be.

9. To Mister Uthoff: You are the man. We depend on you to score late in the game. Don't throw risky passes. Take it to the hole and get fouled. You are so good when you take over. Please become more selfish.

10. Clemmons played some of the best defense I have ever seen last night. He just busted his tail.

11. Props to Woody. Pretty solid game from the big fella. Costello scored down low mostly only when Woody was out of the game.

12. Iowa Coaching staff was really dialed in. It was obvious they really wanted this one.

Good points. That is crazy about crowd security, they should be fired. Agree on Wagner, he reminds me so much of a more athletic Jared Cole. Kid will not back down.

The only other point I would make is that I think people are overlooking how important Jok is to this team. He is a volume shooter and needs to shoot more than he is. I know there are faults in his game, but I love how he shoots every shot with the confidence it will go in, even if he has missed the last 10. Guys like that win close games.

+1, especially late in the shot clock. When we need a shot, I'm more comfortable with the ball in his hands than anyone except Uthoff.

My observation is...Iowa had a big lead, against the number one team in the country...it was melting away...but Iowa didn't collapse and piss it away down their legs... They won the game...

And...MG wanted to be fouled the last 3-4 minutes so he could make the free throws! Which he did!

My only concern with this group is do we have the size to handle a pounding inside that the blue bloods will throw at us. The MSU game was a bit deceiving as there was no outside threat and we packed it inside. Against teams that can shoot it a little bit we will be more challenged.

We are doing a very solid job of ball control (save JU's 8 turnovers last night) and that helps offset our rebounding issues. The experience we have should help and I like the fact that our bench doesn't seem to freak out in stressful situations. I also like the way we changed up the inbounding of the ball against the press and got it into the hands of our shooters. We had some new sets that worked well. Hopefully MG will get some lasting late game FT confidence from his play last night.

The heavy front load of our schedule may work to our advantage as we will have an experience edge that will diminish as the season goes on. We should have pretty fresh legs at this point in the season.

Can't wait for the Purdue game. I don't know how we'll handle their bigs, but I'm anxious to find out.

Did not get to see the game; however, it looks like it was a good win (MSU is obviously struggling without it's leader). It would have been sweeter had D.V. played, but Iowa can only play and beat the team that is on the floor. Hopefully D.V. will be in full swing for next match up. It is always better to play and beat a team that is @ full strength because it eliminates excuses.

I find this to be very disturbing. I would send an email to Barta about this. I agree with Mo that, if a security person was telling people to sit down and be quiet, they should be fired.

I also love Wagner's physicality. He might not be the best shooter or scorer yet, but he holds his own most times. He also had a couple really nice athletic plays in blocked shots and a nice pass deflection that stopped an easy bucket for MSU.

These young kids are developing a little at a time. The bench (Baer, Uhl, Wagner, and Ellingson) is better than many others in the BIG at this point.

What stood out to me was that despite Uthoff having an off shooting night and making a lot uncharacteristic mistakes, the team gutted out a win. Gesell willed the team to victory when it looked the pucker factor was increasing and he got help from Jok and Woodbury with timely buckets.

I think we have enough guys capable of keeping us in games for 30-35 minutes, but need the supporting cast to step up (as they did last night) when Jok and Uthoff are off or getting smothered defensively. As Fran stated postgame, it was important to keep the lead at 10+ and they did that with some timely contributions.

CHA has a new gestapo now..
\"Zit Down! Zit down immediately! Nothing to see here. Do NOT yellat zee officials!

Purdue will be an interesting contrast in style. They play old-school, grinding, two-point basketball. This year, we actually are playing the style of basketball that advanced basketball geeks like that involves lots of spacing and three point shots. If we can play to a draw on rebounds and hit some 3's, I like our chances. Purdue isn't built to blow teams away.

The complaint department can be handled by refusing to purchase tickets to the game. Fans dressed up like empty seats tends to change policy!
I'd much rather have asses in the seats. Or better, out of their seats allowed to yell and scream all they want.

I would not listen to them and keep yelling. Hell with them. They going to throw people out for yelling at a game? Fat effin chance.
You bet, and that is exactly what I did. But some of the older folks get intimidated by this and got pretty quiet. This infuriated me. I didn't get the call reversed, though;)

By the way the worst thing about an otherwise great night was the scorer's table introducing Brady Ellingson as a starter instead of Peter Jok. What the heck is up with that? Was the guy running it drunk? Why are those guys so incompetent? Geesh.

Iowa will not be even with Purdue in rebounds, and they don't have to be.

What Iowa has to do to beat Purdue is hit 3s and push the ball in transition on every possible chance.

sparty is REALLY dependent on Valentine this year.
With him they are a different team.
We'll find out how much different on the return trip to east lansing.
Good to get this one under their belt. 9 more to go to lock up an NCAA tourney bid.

I think the people that head up the basketball experience should take a page out of the football's game plan and realize that the game experience at Carver has gotten stale and drastically needs an injection of game day excitement. And if what is being written about the security force's attitude about the paying customers standing and making noise is true, then dumping them would be a good starting point.

Especially agree on these points. When MG plays like he did last night, he takes himself and the team to another level. Those games are becoming more frequent.

Game was better called than a lot I have seen vs MSU.

Baer is this team's Jeff Moe/Ryan Bowen. He's talented, but inspires and plays above his talent level.

Also, Jok was quietly impressive with his shooting and 4/1 A/TO ratio. He has the offensive aggression naturally that JU is trying to acquire.

JU had a 'bad' game: scoring in double figures with 5rbs and 6 blocked shots. The 8 TOs are him just trying to figure out how to be offensively aggressive vs a tough defense focused on stopping him. I'm foreseeing him getting progressively better at that during the B1G season.

I believe Baer, coming off the bench, shared the lead for rebounds for Iowa...

Productive and opportunistic player for sure.

Baer is that white kid that plays for Duke every year that you just want to punch in the face about 10 times, but God he's fun to have in our uniform!!!

I think that each player contributed in their own way. JU struggled and this team still hung tough. MG was phenomenal as well. Go Hawks!!!

that was really ignorant..when they said #24 Brady Ellingson..I looked at the bench & Jok had this look on his face like "hey I got benched..and nobody told me"...then when it was corrected.....Jok got this big ass grin..and his look changed to "ok which one of you guys set me up?"...

Hooper...did you see Margaret leave her seat in the 1st half..? walked half into the tunnel and then came back...it was a timeout..she definitely had a few words for Cartensen..

HaHa, no I did not notice that. Talked to her briefly after the game. She was mighty happy!

Hooper, not to dwell on anyhting but I agree with practically nothing you said.
Same here but who cares, I'm just happy as can be the Hawks won a game against the Spartans. It didn't hurt Iowa that MSU best player didn't play, but again, who cares? Hawks win.

I really love the energy Baer brings off the bench, but just as impressive is the composure he shows for a freshman. He just seems to play within himself and doesn't get out of control.

If people were complaining about the refs in last night's game, then- ha ha ha....o_O

Good thoughts - a few others:

  • MSU had 3 or 4 offensive rebounds off of missed FT's last night, and I think almost all of them were with Woody on the bench. Thought that was noteworthy.
  • Did Baer not play AAU ball? Hard to believe he was overlooked by even the mid-majors due to HS weight and position (Center). Typically AAU is where you get to play your future position a bit more. That guy is very efficient and has an extremely high BB IQ and simply intuition (nose for the ball). It's his outside shooting that is the big surprise, because we always new he was a savvy player......but he jumps well (blocks, rebounds) and shoots WAY better than anticipated.
  • New defensive rules were VERY noticeable imo - MSU did the best job of any team at keeping a hand up in your face, but we were allowed the freedom to move without hand checking and I thought that made a drastic difference versus previous years. In the battle of philosophies, Iowa's length was now more effective than MSU's bully ball. Length > Strength now.
  • FranCon hit 3 there for a second last night, but he quickly calmed down luckily :)
  • Not just Uthoff but also Uhl has to be more aggressive. Uhl shows flashes but sometimes will have the corner turned and then give up on it. He deferred too much in HS also as he didn't score a big average even though he was a good talent.....his teammate did most of the scoring. He lacks that hyper aggressive "baller" gene that Gesell and Woody have.

Uthoff had a career high in blocks......he had 6 and led the team in rebounding with 5. He did other things to contribute to the win.

Just saying his game wasn't as bad as some have stated.

As far as some other things mentioned.

Rebounding....MSU has been outrebounding their opponents by 13.9 a game. Needless to say a MSU strength that wasn't effected much by Valentines absence. We got outrebounded 41-35...against a team like MSU that's a win for the Hawks folks. The stat line really isn't as bad as all that either because they didn't really do much damage on the offensive boards until we went zone down the stretch. For whatever reason we haven't rebounded real well all year when we're in a zone, don't know what we do to address that. Bottom line....MSU ranked 3rd in the nation in +rebounding margin and our guys more than held there own until the last 12 minutes or so....

http://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-men/d1/current/team/151

Clemmons.... Only scored 2 BUT led the team in assists with 5 and most importantly was the major reason Forbes ended up with 3 pts. Forbes went off for 32 in the previous game and was counted onto make up some of the offensive punch with Valentine being out. Forbes played 28 minutes....Clemmons 28 minutes...coincidence? I think not. Clemmons was all over him and denied him the ball and left him no room to catch and shoot.

Clemmons was one of the unsung heroes of the game. While it was probably missed by most fans it definitely wasn't by the coaches as I saw a couple like Dillard giving him a pat on the back after the game.

Mike G....obviously we can't expect games like this out of Mike on a regular basis but his was on point. Anybody notice he drove to his left a couple times this game? One of the complaints about MG is he always goes to the right....gets stuck on his drives throwing up a prayer ect. Definitely wasn't the case against MSU. When he drove he either scored or found the open man....superlitve performance.

Baer....talk about him starting needs to stop. He's absolutely perfect coming off the bench. Provides a spark AND has been providing much needed offense with the "2nd" unit. He got 21 minutes coming off the bench....he's get starter minutes if he keeps playing this way. Really don't see who'd we sit from the starting line-up that would provide that type of production. Only real candidate would be Clemmons and he doesn't fill that need off the bench.

Wagner....not much on the stat line but provided a solid 12 minutes of defense. I'll take that from him from here on out.

Everyone needs to email Gary Barta about this. I emailed him a couple of weeks ago due to the security yelling at us. We were not cussing or being out of line. We were just giving the opposing players a hard time. The security people kept freaking out and this needs to get addressed.

Haven't heard this before and that is ridiculous. They call playing away games a "hostile" environment for a reason. As long as folks aren't getting out of line ie (excessive swearing/totally inappropriate comments) there is absolutely nothing wrong with getting on opposing players or voicing your displeasure at a "bad" call. That's why they call it a hostile environment.

I've been off the internet for a week while out of town. I looked forward to coming back and reading about the great win (which I did get to see). But this thread, fantastic! Thanks to the many that followed Hooper's excellent opening post with more solid contributions and observations.

Not much to add but to say that when Iowa is allowed freedom of movement our offense is a finely tuned machine. This year we play better than the sum of our parts.
