Praying Mantids

PSA- Be mindful to cover your beer or soda when tailgating this time of year. Wasp's will crawl in your can or bottle and you can get stung.

I have cow killers in my garden. Not many, but enough that I kind of need to look where I'm sticking my hand. They look like big furry ants.

I've seen more and more every year around this time, but still quite rare to see them. Three summers ago I noticed a wee one attached to my rearview mirror tab on my commute to work that couldn't have been much more than a half inch in length. I think they're some of the coolest insects, despite their brutal behavior.

We’ve had the ground-nesting yellow jackets in our yard the past two years and the bastards stung me while mowing last summer. Last month I was trying to flood their new burrow with the garden hose and our idiot dog wanted in on the action. I pulled four stingers out of him, and his right eye swelled to the size of a golf ball:

I was laying some stone on a house last year and one of these things landed near me.

Yep, I had one nail me from a can while sitting on the porch swing. He may have been inebriated as it was just a minor sting.
