PTL Playoff News

I was not there. It has definitely been harder to find information this year, compared to prior years (Brendan Stiles' Hawkeye Drive website was superb in that regard). The Des Moines Register's sports roundup has box scores and Chad Leistikow tweeted some individual stats.

Clemmons will not repeat, as his team lost 103-92 to Uthoff's team. Clemmons had 24, Baer had 13. For the winners, Uthoff had 31 and Uhl had 27.

Jok and Wagner beat Gesell/Williams 111-102. Jok put up 28 and 14, Wagner put up 20 and 11. Gesell had 13 and Williams had 16.

Gatens and Fleming (Ellingson did not play) beat Jones/Hutton 102-99. Fleming put up 24, 15 and 6. Jones had 28 and 14, while Hutton had 32.

Does anyone know why Woodbury's team wasn't in the playoffs? I know they won at least 3 games so that would have to put them in the middle of the pack somewhere......????

The Hawkeye Report interview said that Wagner is up to 225 already so he's putting on some good size
Undersized height-wise, but he could be an enforcer
For height-to-weight ratio comparison, Brandon Dawson is listed as 6'7", 230 in his draft measurements. If Wagner is 6'7", 225 as an incoming freshman, he could end up even bigger as he is still filling out.

The Gazette had Woody's team with a bye. And I agree that this PTL season seems to have less interest from fans and media (not to mention players). With all the new guys, you would have thought there would have been more buzz about these games.

As you mentioned, with Woodbury's team, they had a bye. That's a product of the seven team league this year, one team had the night off and they were the top seed. As far as coverage, I think we have provided it for all but one night of action. My sense is part of it is simply due to the fact that half the time it's up in Waterloo. Not as many media outlets are going to make that trip.

hello everyone. I took the trek in from Chicago area to take in the games last night and will share my observations and opinions as I saw them. I just enjoy basketball and have since I was like 8, [61 now] so a long time. I also have no formal playing ability in high school, college, or pro. I did play some intramurals and lots of pick up games. I had all the moves, but couldn't jump high was 5 ft 10, and most of my buckets came with equal parts luck and ability, lol. So take my observations with more than a grain of salt. This is the second Ptl night I attended and have loved it both times .
The first half I watched Hawkeyes Jok and Wagner , against Gessel and Williams. Also the Soukup brothers were in this game. Jok looks to me better all around, physically, ball handling, shooting as well and improving hops, by that I mean getting up quicker and higher, but his shooting is what separates his game, his shot looked very smooth.
Wagner has that ability to get off the floor quick and seems to defy gravity as he hangs up longer than you think he should. One block came as I think it was Bohannon went up and under and released it on his way done only to have Wagner tip it away on its way up. He has quick hands and can get up easily, and will get more than his share of put back slams. He has some good slashing ability that he showed filling the lane. Didn't notice much shooting from him yet in either night I saw him. He is like Brandon Dawson to me as he is barely if at all taller than Chris Williams. Having said that his ability to elevate and hang and his broad shoulders I see him holding his own quite well.
Williams can play but as was said someplace he is still getting comfortable. The talent is there as IMO he is further along ability wise than Dev Marble was as a freshman. Whether he works hard enogh to get to Dev's level is anyone's guess. I hope he doesn't redshirt and plays as often as he can and learns what it will take under fire. He has good range and nice slashing ability and really good handles for a player his length. Consistency is something no one should expect from him this year.
Mike looked to me like he is ready for the Big Ten to begin . This was fun but he appeared anxious to get everyone together to begin the season and play with his new teamates as well as get the starting five on the court.
The 2 Soukup brothers looked smooth and not intimadated and will serve the Hawks well to play with in practice but do not expect to see them in games, at least this year.
After first half I went to watch the game in the other gym. I will try and write more about this game later as it was as competative as you could ever ask for. 2 guys we here will be talking about matched up and neither would give in .
Andrew Fleming and Brandon Hutton should both be fan favorites. They are both as I see it extremely competative. They will battle from the opening whistle until the clock ticks off the last tenth of a second. Hutton is as advertized a high motor guy, and ready now to play defense on anybody and did in this game really making Fleming work for anything on offense. Hutton will force you to be uncomfortable doing what you want on offense, making you go opposite of the direction you want. Hutton also, [when it was clear that Washpun could go down the lane whenever he wished], switched over to guard him and slowed him considerably but that left Fleming more open to do what he wished. On offense, he is going to surprise too as he has a more than decent shot, not maybe the range of Fleming but a good crossover and it appears a nice pullup mid range jumper. He can also get up and dunk easily. My guess from what I have seen is he will get good minutes this year as likely will Fleming, both to my eye seem ready to contribute this season.
Dale Jones can shoot and will go inside if you overplay his shot, so he is not one dimensional. He will be a very good addition and make lineups very interesting.
I will try to write more later if anyone is interested as the final game had Uhl and Uthoff opposing Sapp and Baer

Tom, I certainly wasn't referring to the coverage you've provided, which is greatly appreciated. It just seems as though, unlike in past years, there is very little fan input and if you watch the game highlight films, there are hardly any fans in attendance, whereas in the past, some games were sro. I agree that having some games in Waterloo somewhat diminishes the interest from the fans and the media, especially when so many of the Hawkeye players don't attend the games. That said, I am very excited to see these kids in action once the season starts.

So...you weren't there but you are looking at the fan attendance? Been plenty crowded at every game that I've gone to in NL. I did have to miss yesterday's games, though. I really wish I could have been there.

Sorry I couldn't finish earlier but let's get to the final game of the night. The Hawks in this game had The U 's, Uthoff and Uhl vs Sapp and Baer. I know this is a team game and I am making very little mention of the Uni players and their contributions,[which by the way in all games were considerable, even losing Seth Tuttle, I think they will do very well in the MVC] but I am more interested in Hawkeye players. In so saying let me go on.
Sapp looks in great shape and will for sure give the Hawks great contributions. I heard the opposing coach, Uhl's and Uhtoff's say about Sapp don't dribble when you are going against the best defensive player in the league , Pass it !!!. Cleammons certainly gets after it on defense and gets his fingers out there to tip passes away from there intended target and is pretty good at slapping the ball away whenever anyone drives on him in the lane. On the downside I also saw that that can still happen to him in the lane, I am not sure why this happens, whether it is he gets in too deep or exposes the ball on a drive, [it may just be PTL games and working on your own game] still he did make several good drives to the hoop and finish. Baer looks very thin and not strong but man does he have a knack to be where he should, very smart and a great touch both inside and outside, and although he looks weak he isnt at all shy about going inside and working inside for rebounds. If he gets into the shape that Uhl or Uhtoff are in look out he could be a real force. Dom Uhl has gained good muscle, and when he is aggressive and plays above the rim as I saw on a couple ocassions he will be a very welcome addition to play big minutes. He missed some buckets inside he shouldn't by finessing it and my hope is that a bit of a "you're not going to stop this" and slam it home will be what to look for as the season goes along and will get him major minutes this year with his combination of size, speed and ball handling he should be a bad matchup for opponents. Which brings me to Uthoff, he will at times if he needs too, put the team on his back and kill his opponent. he is stronger and really really quick for anyone close to his size. He can be as good as anyone in the country this year IMO. Will he? We will see....He can drain it from deep with a hand below his face , lol as he shoots it high or go by people and with 2 strides slam it home for an and one. In the game last night it was getting close and then he did just that. It was like the last game in Hoosier's I'll make it and he meant it.
I think the final in the league should be fun, though it is another week away, I feel pretty sure that Woodbury/Alexander, team will be playing Uthoff/Uhl and should be fun so hope anyone that gets to that game I hope will let us in on their courtside view.
I know the B1G is loaded again but this team should have plenty of shooters, experienced guards, and some very high motor guys, not the size of Purdue but speed, quick leapers and quick slashers , [and we have them], can make up for height. I think anyone on this team that doesn't give 110% will lose minutes rather quickly as these young guys look very focused and determined to show what they can do. Having said that the experience of the upperclassmen will likely keep the young guys at bay for now, but I wouldn't write any of them out this year from making huge strides and forcing Fran into playing them . I know Fran said redshirting is a possibility for a player or 2 even or something to that effect, but my bet is that these young guys make too big an impression in practices for him to do so.
Practices should be intense, and the games fun. Looking forward to the season, ALOT !!!!!

Love your handle. I was a little too young to really appreciate Ronnie Lester, but my dad always says he was the best Iowa has had. My dad brought me up to him after a "shirts and skins" game in the fieldhouse before a football game when I was pretty young. Remember him being soft spoken and seemingly very kind. Still have the autograph.

Tragic, what happened to his knee. I know Magic wrote he was the toughest opponent he faced in the Big Ten. Lute, also, said I think after retirement, that Lester was the best he ever coached.

What do you all think he could have done if he wouldn't have gotten hurt? I know he did a lot, anyway, but what do you think his ceiling was healthy?

Sorry, for hijacking the thread.

Ronnie could have won us the NCAA Title. And completely healthy would have had an NBA career easily considered among the top 35 or 40 of all time.

His signature was being able to take his man and get to the free throw line, maybe two feet outside it, and there was this brief second while Ronnie kept the dribble alive and decided whether to drive, pass or shoot. And he did all three as well as anyone, ever.

Awesome reports. I'm really excited about this team and Utoff. I think the Big is too tough to win, but less than a Sweet 16 with this team will be a huge disappointment. They have the parts and experience to catch fire.

What flavor is that koolaide?

With all of the accolades about the new talent on the team...I am glad they are on the BB team and not of the FB team where they would rot, unused, on the bench, while watching upperclassmen finish another disappointing season.

We need an elite PG...to elevate this slashing talent...

I was happy to give you my impressions of the players I watched at the ptl and yes I am excited and looking forward to watching this team grow. I like the freshman and with the right work ethic and time I think they will be very good . Having said this they are freshman and I am pretty sure consistency is not something to expect from them this year. If they listen to the coaches, work hard and play good team ball they could play a big part this season IMO. The really good news as I see it is they all have the talent and ability for the B1G and given the #'s someone will step up and play well this year, maybe several of them. It will be a fun ride I think watching this team grow..... as for Ronnie Lester, he was just so fun to watch, on the break, driving by his man, or the best driving by him stopping as his man went by and the swishing a little jumper, sweet as sugar.
