Would you prefer he catch at the 8-10 yard line or let it go to be downed inside the 5 ???

Ok. Skip Iowa for a week and watch every other college game and their punt returns in that area of the field. We'll wait for you to report back.
I recently read an article/post that said due to punters being able to kick the ball with more backspin and 'deaden' the ball that punt returners were now told to stand around the 7 yard line for fair catches. If it bounces around the 7-8 yard line, the percentages were high that the ball would stay out of the endzone.

Most teams anymore seem to fair catch it outside the 6 or 7 or so. I think that has a lot to do with the punters kicking it "nose down" when trying to pin teams back. I wish the return man would stay away when inside the 10.

Without a doubt. That part of the field there is a HUGE difference between it being on the 7 or 8 yard line as opposed to the 1 or 2.

I believe it also has to do with how well a punt is covered. That’s an area where it seems like the spread punt formation used often in college enables teams to get downfield quicker without fighting thru as much of the return team.

I think our returner (Jackson?) said he needs to be more aware of his position. I think he caught them at 9, 8, 8, 7 and once at the 1. So I think he was mostly talking about the 1.

When the offense is consistently taking over inside its own 10 yard line, I wouldn't mind seeing Jackson let it go once in a while. Really not much a difference between starting at the 8 and starting at the 3 if you think about it. A touchdown drive is unlikely, and worst case scenario, you take a safety, but get the opportunity to flip the field.
