Punting

Maybe we can actually help out punters out this year and not go three and out every time we are inside our own 20 yard line so they aren't kicking out of the end zone every other punt. I don't remember a year like last year ever in that regard, and I was at every game in 1998-99 when getting any first down felt like a huge accomplishment.

Uh, ya, that wasn't the problem.

I remember that too. One of the few falls that was able to make other plans in Saturday’s.

So more field to work with and less directional punting needed leads to shorter punts? Interesting, if he punts from midfield will he have longer punts?

Possibly, but if you are downing it inside the 10 or 20, the average won't be as high even though it's exactly the outcome you want. Stats show highest averages and best net punting comes when punting between your own 20 and 40 yard line. The punter already lines up 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage, if you have to shorten that because you are backed into the end zone, of course it makes it harder to punt with less time to get it off and punt blockers closer by the yard. Think of it like golf, hitting a long iron out of the fairway vs hitting an iron when your ball is under a tree and you can't take a full backswing because you'll hit the tree. You are just trying to get it out of there without making it worse.

Punting is so 2017. BF's new offensive philosophy includes the phrase, "We have four damn downs. We're gonna use 'em all if we need 'em." Or something like that. I'm in.

I'd say give the kid a chance before anyone bitches. It's a new season. Practice happened. Let's see.
Thanks for that. Its like no one ever gets any better. Heck maybe we'll all be on here mid-year complaining about the punting again, but maybe not as well.

Agree.
It's reasonable to be skeptical. Not so reasonable to complain before we've yet to see any of the punt game in live action.

How many of you thought Recinos would have been such a good kicker last year after the terrible showing he had in 2016.
I am surprised by the announcement but I am hopeful it means both kickers have improved.

Recinos only hit a third of his FG in 2016, since he was the backup and only had 3 (long) attempts.

Since FG kicking was mentioned, I saw a note in the Gazette that South Dakota State U was the school where Adam Vinateri kicked and that his nephew is kicking there now and doing awesome even with long kicks. How in the heck did most every school in the country miss on that name and not check him out or did the dude just love SDSU (South Dakota State U).

I believe Chase Vinatieri committed early and there is a very strong family connection to SDSU. I don't know if he had any big school offers but he has a cannon leg for sure, had an impressive career at Sioux Falls Roosevelt.

That was the day after Colten had a loved one become grievously ill, FYI.

I am sticking my neck out and making a prediction: our ST units, which ranged from poor to outstanding, will range from good to outstanding this year, with most of the improvements coming from punt, PR, and KOR.

Good analogy. What is the % of times Iowa will be inside its own 5 and punting? Fairly small amount of time to be backed up that far. And a little different than the original premise.

I bet your son enjoys talking with you about his athletics - so, so positive!
Dont have a son, only a daughter. I am positive, when it's time to be positive. Im also realistic, and wont look down on anyone who is pessimistic about iowa starting one of the worst punters in the entire nation last year. Cue the "you know guys get better!" Crowd

I like that you countered your own argument so nobody else had to
