Purdue is next

This is going to be a huge test. I think they might destroy us with the huge advantage they will have inside.

If the game gets out of hand early I hope we press the crap out of them and try to get into an up tempo game. Let's test those guards and get those big guys running up and down the court. May not work but that may our best shot.

Agreed And1Hawk.

We've got to push the ball and the biggest asset we could have is if our shots fall. I know that sounds simple but we can wear out Haas and even Swannigan by pushing tempo, and take away their obvious rebounding advantage by given them little or nothing to grab.

A game like this always reminds me of the time Lute Olson was asked how he prepares his team to stop a top competitor on the court. He said you don't try to stop them. You make them work harder for everything they get. Maybe it takes 'em five more shots to get their average, or they hit 15 points instead of twenty.

Be ready to shoot off screens with Swanigan and Haas.

Don't be afraid of their size. Give Cook and Pemsl opportunities to score.

Team defense has got to be up for the task. Purdue will be tough to guard with options inside and out. Watch out for the little Edwards who's a wild card.

I think if we can hold Swanigan down to below his average we stand a chance. Big Haas is a horse but make him beat us before Swanigan.

I think it will be a tough, close game. What I'll be most interested in is the way Bohannon holds up against the defensive pressure. He's a tough kid, but I'm interested in to see how he reacts.

Guard play will be huge in this game. If their guards play well and are able to get into the lane, it's over for us. Agree Bohannon has to be able handle the pressure, Williams plays to his potential, Ellingson keeps up the defense and timely scoring, I think we have a good chance.

The blueprint for how Iowa won the first game last year is very much the key for this meeting. The Hawkeyes put on the half-court trap in the second half and kept The Boilermakers from really getting into their offense...and converting turnovers into their own offense. Haas and Swanigan cannot score if they don't touch the ball and the guards are having to rush shots due to the clock winding down. Without a guy like Woodbury to clog the middle, for Iowa's young and undersized posts to try to go straight at Purdue's bigs would be a low percentage move. Pemsel and Cook are going to have to exert a lot of energy on the defensive end alone. They could have a great game without scoring a lot.

The key to getting a good shot against a team that can make things difficult for you offensively from 15-feet in, is dribble penetration and sharp passing. Make them move, wear them down. Know ahead of time what a good shot will be and don't hesitate the second you get the look, otherwise they will have a hand in your face in the blink of an eye.

The contest in West Lafayette was one of, if not the best, defensive efforts Jok has played in his time in a Hawkeye uniform. Last year he had 4 experienced teammates who forced him to raise his level of play. This time around, his supporting cast is still green and will be getting a harsh taste of what The Big Ten will be like right off the bat.

Bohannon will be fine. My biggest concern is with officiating. Pemsl is going to try to respond to big, physical players with his own physicality. Will refs let our freshman big play? Or will he pick up a quick two fouls thereby relegating our most physical, and maybe most spirited, player to the bench?

Who knows what to expect of Cook. I wish he could have gotten a quick burn last night to at least get some anxiety out of his system. I suspect Cook has played enough big time ball against enough big time talent not to be over-stimulated, but still, he might fall victim of trying to do too much too soon. As someone else mentioned—thankfully the students aren't there.

Pemsl has emerged as very important to the team, both in terms of measurables like scoring, rebounding, size but also in terms of psyche. He's become Iowa's tough big brother who seems to have emboldened everyone else to be a little tougher. He needs to be on the court with as much freedom to play (meaning not concerned with foul issues) as possible.

My other key is Moss. If he's on the other wing making people pay for over-helping on Jok, offense becomes well-functioning for this team. Everybody spreads out and everything falls into place. Wagner, Pemsl, and Cook have space to play. Bohannon is found open for the occasional three. Bench guys can play to their strengths.

Uhl—I am optimistic about him again. Last night told me that he is being coached to be aggressive (or sit). While he still hasn't figured out how to finish, hopefully he is recognizing that he brings great value just by attacking and drawing fouls.

I can't wait to see how they respond to the B1G challenges.

Have they solved their guard problem? Last year Fran exposed them because they were too one dimensional. And Uhl had a terrific game. I think Pemsl is a crafty defender but he needs to stay out of foul trouble and we need good minutes from Cook.

This game I am worried about, and the reason is due to the fact that this is our freshman's first taste of what Big 10 ball is. Yes, they played Virginia, but that was before the lineup change if I am not mistaken. Purdue is good, but outsides of Swannigan and V Edwards, I don't think they are that good. Haas has seemed non-existent this year for a 7'1 dude. If he stays that way this game, might be a good shot. I agree, use our speed against their size will be the main key and depending on how the frosh handle the pressure of a Big 10 road game, could be a surprising outcome.

We are not good enough to win without Cook and Pemsl getting involved offensively.

Dribble penetration and sharp passing sound great. This Iowa team is not outstanding in either category right now.

It's a given that Iowa will press and push the pace. It's one of our strengths. We cannot abandon the rest of our strengths because Purdue has two tall guys. If we do we'll get 100% routed like everyone says.

Our guards and outside shooting are key. And can Cook, Pemsl and Wagner keep lottery pick Swanigan under 20/20? Hope our entire front court doesn't foul out trying. Seriously, I see this BIG opener as the toughest game on our entire schedule. Kriener could see lots of minutes because of the foul situation.

I'm not saying they shouldn't be. They are included in the overall scheme which will require everyone to be active without the ball and whoever has it, to move it around. Iowa will have to run some half court offense throughout the game. Purdue is too big and experienced inside to expect Cook and Pemsl to just post up and take it right at them.

Going to be fun, agree this may well be Hawks toughest game in the B1G. It will certainly be toughest since the Emerald Coast Tournament. Hawks have to continue to play defense as well or better than they have been lately or it over early. I am sure we'll be able to figure out how to score buckets, but stopping Purdue will take a huge amount of effort on D and on the boards. Go Hawks, win and you have served notice to the rest of the league you'll be a factor this year not down the road.

While our freshman will be much shorter at least they have enough weight to make it more difficult to push them out of position. Biggie will get his but hopefully we can slow Hass down.

I agree with the concern about J Bo handling B1G guards. If Edwards can play Jok successfully one on one we are in for a long night. The defensive book in Jok seems to be beat the crap out of him and Purdue is not above it.

Neither player has played in the B1G nor seen this kind of size across an entire front line this year. Will be interesting to see how they do.

And they will be tested right out the gates with Purdue on the road! I am actually glad that is the case. Get one of the toughest games first thing. I hope we can handle them with our depth. But if not, This will give the youngins something to build off of immediately....

The tape of this game will be dissected right away, then studied again, then hit the gym hard Thursday morning to be coached up... We will learn a lot from this game that will benefit the remainder of the season. And the next time Purdue runs into us, they will take some lumps.

We will have to make them work on defense. If at the end of a possession our best option is to throw it inside we should take it.

Notre Dame's Colson at 6'6" put up over 20. Their big man aren't unapproachable like Hammons last year who blocked everything in sight.

I didn't remember marble missed most of that game after a hot start with the injury. Man that was one hostile atmosphere.

Wow!! After re watching that entire game omg those refs did everything possible to get Purdue the win. What atrocious officiating, and idiot vitale never questioned a single call. I didn't care for him then or now either. Oh by the way merry Christmas

Jeff Moe deserved to have his jersey retired immediately after that game. And maybe a statue outside Carver-Hawkeye.

Will be interesting to see how all the young Hawkeyes handle their first B10 game and first B10 game on the road.

Very tough match up. Need to guard the basket, hope Boiler shooters aren't hitting, and rebound. Moss and Baer need to score, because Painter will try to take Pete away and they are huge inside.

I don't anything about how Purdue handles transition but Kevin Lehman said if Iowa can get them to play a different tempo then they are used to, maybe the bigs will wear down some.

I agree. I hope Cline and Mathias aren't hitting 3's. Our bigs should take care of "Biggie". I think I would put Isaiah on Mathias and rotate Jordan and Christian on Cline to start. And we need Nicholas and the bench to contribute.

The officiating at Indiana and tOSU in IC was even worse. Although there's still plenty of poor officials still around the outright game fixers are pretty much all gone.

This is going to be a long game for Iowa, I fear. Purdue is pretty good and Haas and Swanigan will devour our smaller freshmen.
