QB

It's not his first or second game. It's now game 15 or 16 or whatever for a junior. How much longer do we have to wait for him?
He wasn't good enough for you last year? So now is the time to give up, 2 games into the season? It really is just mind boggling. There is no satisfying some people

By any objective measure, Stanley has been seriously underwhelming. Any other position that was being played as poorly as QB has been the first two games would be up for grabs. Frankly, I thought Mansell would have been a good option for Iowa starting the second half today.

We all remember Stanley's brilliant ISU and OSU performances from last year, but what about Wisconsin, Michigan State, Northwestern, and Purdue? We gave him the benefit of the doubt because it was his first year as a starter, so what's the excuse now?

Did you watch Stanley's backup from last year, Tyler Wiegers, today? He led Eastern Michigan to a 20-19 win @ Purdue throwing for over 300 yards, including a 75-yard TD pass, a 50-yard TD pass that was dropped in the end zone, and a laser on 4th and 15 late in the game for the first down that led to the game-winning FG. Wiegers looked far better than Stanley. There is simply no comparison.

We all know that there's no way Mansell gets a shot to win the job, and the only way he plays if it's a blowout or Stanley gets hurt. So we'd better hope Stanley figures it out, and fast.

This. Stanley seems to get a free ride. He has been underwhelming in more games than he has been good in.

Iowa and KF are the rare college program where playing the backup QB is off the table no matter how bad the starter plays.

I think the Iowa style offense works better when the QB is more mobile. Iowa offense so far this year is below average (again).

I think I'm with you on this one. Between his bio, spring game and last week, Mansell deserves the start vs UNI next week. If it goes wrong then fall back to Stanley, but as of now Stanley just isn't very impressive. He's not horrible by any means, I just want to see more of what Mansell can do.
The QB merry go round seems to be working really well for PU NW & others ;).
NO THANKS!

I like Stanley, I support him. I just think, as another poster said, he hasn't improved much through all of the chances he has had. And honestly, he just isn't a leader. He doesn't seem to have that "fire" in him to want to win. The overthrows and underthrows and lack of playmaking...let's see what kind of fire a

Solid point. I just want to see more of what Mansell can do but I need to be more patient.

Oops. You weren't supposed to see those thoughts.

Could this be the curse of the Jr. QB?! Every year we have a JR QB, they suck!! Also, worst play calling in college football at any level!

I did get a good chuckle earlier in the year about Stanley and his "prototypical" NFL size and he'd be gone to the Pro's and yada, yada, yada. LOL! He has been awful in the two home wins. Benchable for sure.

I thought he would be OK for the most part this year, and I wasn't expecting Chuck Long,
But I sure didn't expect him to look like crap in two home games in a row against NIU & ISU.

Didn't think it would occur to me all year to want him benched, but I wouldn't shed a tear if it happened.

The fact that people are calling for Wiegers back shows how psychotic some people are on this board. No patience, no belief, even after a win. Honestly it is just sad
Is all our problems the QB or could it be the play calling? Or maybe who the D is? Every year this board wants the new QB who apparently hasn't proven himself in practice. The last 3 or 4 Iowa QB all suck per this board. It might be true but the coaches spend 16 hours a day on this and you guys only spend 4 hours a week and a case of beer:rolleyes: We're not Alabama or Ohio State who have the pick of the litter every year..Better linemen and better receivers might make Stanley a All American. We'll never know. Who would have thought that Bethard or Rudock could possible make the NFL..

QB is a rhythm position. And from what I see, the offensive philosophy offers him zero chance to get into rhythm. We said the same things about CJ and Jake also.
I think this is the main issue. The QB issues are inherent with the system.

However, I will take 13-3 over ISU, and I'll take 33-7 over NIU. ONE freshman mistake yesterday could have lost that game. I'm willing to give ISU credit for good defense based on what I've seen from them in the past. Lest we forget, ISU gives us problems when they suck. Now, ISU (I think) has a pretty competitive team, and I believe they returned about 9 starters on D, so it's no miracle they stymied our offense much of the day.

Let's see what happens against the clearly inferior UNI team.

Lets see......coming off of an 8-5 year with a new offensive coordinator and a first year quarterback and a couple of really close losses while crushing Ohio State beating Iowa State and winning their bowl game and now this year 2-0 against a couple of tough teams and we need a new quarterback? We need the guy who is second string who lost out to the guy who is first string to do what exactly?

Yes. I'm easily satisfied. I'd like a Quarterback that doesn't throw 9 feet behind a wide open Fant or overshoot a wide open Easly. Those seem like simple request for a third year guy with 15 starts under his belt.

This is factually inaccurate

I think Stanley is the best qb with the best handle on the offense on the team. He hasn’t thrown the ball well at times, and other times receivers have dropped great passes. Both kill our offense and make the run game more difficult.

I wouldn’t mind Mansell getting a series or two a game like Banks in 2001, if he brings a different dimension. Is he a scrambling quarterback that provides a run threat where Stanley doesn’t? If he’s just a younger pocket passer, there’s no reason to insert him unless Stanley becomes the primary reason the offense struggles, and so far he isn’t.

I’m not giving up hope that the offense will start clicking soon. They have, however, been dreadful to watch at times this season.

The entirety of the offense sputtering is not on Stanley. Neither is he performing like the NFL draft pick some wanted to proclaim him. He's shown a lot of the same positives and negatives as last year.
Reality is that with Kirk at the helm he tends to pick a starter and that's the starter for the year, with a few exceptions.
I'm not arguing to start Mansell. Far from it. I just have never bought into the idea that a QBs ego is so fragile that he can't handle sitting for a series or two during a game if the offense is ineffective. Every other player on the field is out at some point and it doesn't seem to destroy their confidence.

I think our passing game is going to cost us the west division. I don’t see our defense carrying us through the B1G season. Too bad, cuz our defense is salty AF.

There were open receivers/TE yesterday and time to find them. Seems like Stanley is afraid to make a mistake back there. If he doesn't get his stuff together, no way we compete for the West title with Wisky. Wisconsin has a defense that is one of the best in the country and they totally dominated Iowa last year. Without Josh Jackson's TDs, it would have been a laugher. Let's hope Nate gets his sh!t together next week and helps us beat Wisky.

Iowa's defense statistically is better than Wisconsin's.

I'll be the first to call for Peyton Mansell
I like Stanley, but when he is off his game Mansell would be an option. Glad to see Tyler Weigers have an outstanding game against Purdue. Coaches think they will offend the 1st stringer if they play the 2nd stringer, an example is Urban Meyer playing Barret because he was his friend when his substitute was better.
Iowa's middle linebacker was replaced when he had a few problems, but he will l get the opportunity to play later, but 2nd string quarterbacks don't get the opportunity like the other players on the team in Iowa system. Took Heisman candidate Brad Banks a long time to play, and Tyler Weigers looked very good.

Ken O'Keefe is back on the coaching staff and he does have a reputation for regressing returning quarterbacks. That said it's only the second game.

Stanley is not a strong leader as someone else pointed to. Drew tate was a leader, sometimes a little crazy but a good leader. I think it helps everyone when they know the qb is gonna take charge and do whatever they can to win. Beathard is another example of a true leader. Injuries just killed him from being the best he could have been.

I also believe KF is so anti-mistake that the qb's are scared shittless to take chances.

Mansell threw one pass for like 30 yards. I know it was moo up duty but the guy wants to move the chains. I think they should design a package or two for him with his mobility as an excuse.
He was also a shining star in the spring game. I think if more people read his background they would see his potential. FYI just behind Mansell is 4 star recruit Spencer Petras. QB play is going to be exciting in the future. *Crosses fingers*

I will quietly from a dark corner toss this idea a bone...I REALLY hope Stanley does loosen up. Right now, he is grossly misreading the field; he’s underthrowing WRs, throwing into coverage. It’s still early, but by week 3 he needs to be getting it together.

He is also way late on quick passes. The slant pass stanzi threw to beat Michigan State would have been in the back of the end zone by the time he threw it.

I think the last thing this team needs is a QB controversy. I’m confident Nate is the guy who should be starting and getting the majority of the snaps. He’s not perfect but he’s shown enough over his career that I’m happy to have him leading the offense.

Good post. Stanley has been very disappointing. I haven't seen any improvement from last season yet. His footwork and accuracy are still sloppy at times. I hope he can become the outstanding QB that so many assume he will be. He has along way to go yet at this point.

QB seems to be the only position protected in Kirk's system no matter how poorly he performs. That said, I haven't totally given up on Stanley, but he looks extremely tight out there.

Yep Stan is uptight, stood and over thinking his play right now. He has to loosen up and react more than try to aim passes. Just doesn't look right on a lot of passes. The more time he has the more he over thinks the throw.

You're right about that, but would it hurt to see a little bit more after what you've seen from Stanley?
Stanley has thrown a few in the dirt, but he's also had some good throws. You can't give up on a starter 2 games in. What does that say to the rest of the locker room to bench a good qb after 2 starts for an unproven QB?
It actually helps. The last thing any starter needs to believe is his job is safe with bad play. Stanley looks uncomfortable and his accuracy has been terrible these last 2 games

Agree, doing everything in slow motion does not help one get a rhythm.
