DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - Iowa now has the most structurally deficient bridges in the nation, according to a report from 2024. And one of those named in the report is the Centennial Bridge.

Of the 23,719 bridges in Iowa, 19.2% are listed as structurally deficient meaning of the key elements is in poor or worse condition.

Built in 1940, the latest report shows the Centennial Bridge has more than 26,000 crossings each day, making it the most traveled structurally deficient bridge in the state.

Now, there’s discussion on what to do with this bridge.

Discussions begin for Centennial Bridge's future
On Tuesday, Illinois DOT engineer Michael Kuehn talked with Davenport city leaders to share what options they could be looking at.

“It may be that we rehabilitate it. It may be that we have to reconstruct it. We really don’t know yet,” Kuehn said. “We are in the gathering stage of this process. We certainly want to get the public input right off the bat here, so we get everybody’s input as we’re progressing along.”

Although the Centennial is listed as an Iowa bridge, it is the Illinois DOT who is primarily responsible for maintaining its condition.

However, funding for the project will come from both states, including federal money allocated from the infrastructure bill signed by Former President Joe Biden in 2021.

Officials estimate phase 1 of 3 will take approximately 18 months.

Optimistically, the project is slated to break ground in 2029 or 2030.

But they want to hear from you.

A public input meeting is scheduled for April 17 in Rock Island at the Holiday Inn.
