I know this is old news, but Tate Wildeman who played high school football in Colorado & is the son of a former Hawkeye o-lineman is going to Nebby. I guess I don't recall much about his dad's career at Iowa, but it sounds like Iowa offered this kid late in the recruiting process. Is this kid much of a player? Should Iowa have recruited him harder? Thoughts from anyone that has seen him play?

Parker Wildeman? Assuming that’s his dad. Pretty good D lineman. He was a senior I believe the first year of the banana peal jerseys. Read that Parker was pissed at KF for not offering his kid sooner. Also in that same article found out Frank Verducci is an offensive analyst at Nebraska, good lord how does that guy keep landing jobs

If I remember correctly, it recently came out that the Dad wasn’t happy with how Iowa “slow played” him. It turned the family away from Iowa so I don’t think it mattered if Iowa recruited him harder.

Dad was good friends with Bob Diaco, the D Coordinator, plus had grandparents in Lincoln and had attended games when he was young.

As I recall, he had scheduled visit to Iowa week after nebraska visit but committed to Nebraska and never visited.

You snooze, you lose. Letting assumptions and emotions sway your decisions is not the best way to operate, but maybe it'll work out OK for him. If Iowa didn't show interest until late, it either means the kid wasn't showing the stuff Iowa was looking for or Iowa simply didn't need him.

What ever happened with that O-line legacy recruit that was all bent out of shape about not getting an Iowa offer?

Wasn't this an OL that ended up at Minnesota?

Trevor Ruhland? Went to Notre Dame...bio says he's a backup but saw action in 9 games as a soph.

Sean Foster? Went to Iowa State......may start at tackle.

I'm still not sure I'd call an offer that came in early April "late in the process".

Here's our article on Iowa's offer to Wildeman, which ran on April 2, 2017.

Two weeks after that, he got an offer from Nebraska and committed on the spot. Took some visits elsewhere I believe when they went through their coaching change, but stuck with the Huskers after they hired Frost.

I see Parker quite a bit at the gym here in Colorado. He hates IOWA or at least Ferentz and staff. I think a lot of the guys from Fry’s twilight years and ones who were here during the transition dislike Ferentz because of the culture change.

Someone also mentioned that Parker was on the S&C staff during the transition but wasn’t retained.

I watched Tate play a couple of times last year. He stood out because of his size, but I didn’t see the motor that his dad had.

Yes, Foster is who I was thinking of...wasn't another Bobek or something that claimed an OSU offer at some point?

Thanks Blair (and others in this thread) for the info on Wildeman. I was certainly in correct in saying that Iowa offered late on this potential recruit.

I think you are correct. That 1999 year was brutal.

If you haven't read Derek Pagel's book "Growing Up Hawkeye," it's a pretty great read and he talks about the transition from Fry to Ferentz. Apparently workouts were a joke in Fry's last years - Fry himself has said that he was sneaking in one door at UIHC for cancer treatments while Don Patterson was sneaking in another for the same thing, so hard to keep things running smoothly under those conditions - and Kirk came in demanding everyone's best. It was a real "new sheriff in town" moment and a lot of people were rubbed the wrong way. The party was over. We all know how it turned out, but no surprise that some people left with hurt feelings.

I never said everyone was upset by it. Lots of guys rose to the occasion. Then you had guys like Ryan Loftin and from what other people in this thread have said, Parker Wilderman.

With any change in leadership, there are people who either adapt to the change and get on board and those that don't. It doesn't make either the new leader or the team members bad people, just how change is. The elder Wildeman was an assistant S&C coach for Fry's last 3 years. He wasn't retained when KF was hired and Doyle took over the S&C program and filled the S&C staff with his own guys. With that context, it's not hard to understand why the younger Wildeman committed to Nebraska when offered when Diaco (a former teammate of Wildeman's) was the d-coordinator at Nebraska.

Because he is a f-ing QB guru, just f-ing ask him. He is the f-ing best thing that has happened to f-ing anywhere he ends up.

Just kidding of course...but if you have ever been in the same vicinity of him he drops more f-bombs than any human. That is why it is comical that Frost says there is no cussing in Nebbies culture. Verducci can't go to sleep before he utters one last f-bomb. He is a legend in his own mind because he spent a short stint with the 49ers back when Montana was there. If you listen to him he will take 99% of the credit for what happened then

Foolish perspective by the Wildemans. DE wasn't a huge position need ... and from the early recruitment of Waggoner, it looked like the Hawks might land him early anyhow. Of course, as things transpired, he slowed down his recruitment and the Hawks didn't land him til later in the process.

No offense to the Wildemans, but if the Iowa coaches need to decide between keeping a Des Moines pipeline solid versus placating an alum who doesn't even live in our traditional recruiting footprint ... then the decision is a no-brainer.

Iowa offered before Nebraska. Iowa was his third Power 5 offer. As Blair said, that was in April. Hard to call that slow playing. Definitely not late in the process. Would have liked to see Iowa get him in for a visit during Nebraska’s dumpster fire season and following coaching change. I know we are happy with who we got and it wasn’t a great position of need but it still stings to lose a 4 Star legacy recruit to a division rival. That’s not something that should happen.

James Daniels begs to differ. So does Leshaun to certain extent, i.e. league, not division.

Iowa was a little lucky James wanted to play with big brother because he could have gone anywhere. An absolute specimen as a lineman who will be in the NFL for a decade. They had a similar situation with Justin Hilliard who eventually did choose OSU.

Read my post above. Iowa was likely never going to get the younger Wildeman given that his dad was on Fry's last staff as a S&C coach and wasn't retained by KF and Doyle. He was a lock to sign with Nebraska once they offered when Diaco was the d-coordinator, who played with the elder Wildeman. Chinander, the current Nebraska d-coordinator, was a freshman his first year during Fry's last year in 1998. He was a walk-on and earned Offensive Team Leader (o-lineman) in the Orange Bowl year. Iowa was just never going to to get this recruit once Nebraska offered given who was and is on their staff and their ties to Wildeman's Dad, and that the Dad wasn't retained by KF.

Chinander, FYI, is one to keep an eye on. Has spent time at Oregon and as a position coach in the NFL. Iowa grad.

FWIW, I know at least one former Hawk that was a senior on Ferentz’s first team. The guy LOVED Fry, but said he’d have traded all his glory years with Fry for another with KF.

There's more than one ... I've heard about a number of those SRs who stuck around who really embraced the change in culture that Kirk was instituting in the program. Also, since Kirk was much younger back then ... he connected even more to the players then too.

Who was the player who publicly said after KFs first year he wished he could stay and that fans should start buying season tickets because good things were coming for the program?

AJ Blazek?

***Edit - Correction, it was Jay Bickford. After his final game as a senior he said that if he had money he would buy the next 10 years of tickets.

Verducci is a qb guru? Where does that come from?

Too bad Tate wasn't making his own decision, although we will be fine without him. Dad had to control his sons choice based on being butt hurt about KF. Sad.

Good God CID....reading was optional for me when I read that post. I read it as Verduzco...as in Mario. Verduzco is the little self pro-claimed sailor cussing QB guru. My bad

Makes way more sense that way. I had never known Frank to be a consistent curser. That cat has 9 lives though.

Yes, Bickford is who I was thinking of. Thanks!

What would a message board be without a grown man talking smack on a 17 year old boy. Gotta love it.
