Summation of the article: you're gonna have a few down years when you recruit such great players! Uncle Randy just perpetually polishing turds.

Part of the reason this Iowa season is so special, and why Luka's dominance is so special, is because of that Xavier Foster circus last fall. After XF picked ISU, there were articles, and tweets, and fandom raining down about how ISU is such a superior program to Iowa. How Iowa can't develop players. How XF would never be anything or play for anything with Fran.

Now, Iowa is set up for another NCAA tournament, will have a very solid, competitive roster coming back next season (even if Luka leaves), and that's without NBA caliber recruits coming in every year.

I'm not saying Iowa is a superior program to ISU. We don't have recent sweet 16's and conference tournament championships. But to look at the two programs right now, that narrative from last fall about Iowa being a dumpster fire needs a little readjusting.

Iowa has more deep runs in the tournament, including Final 4s, than ISU. We also dominate the head to head series.

RECENT tournament runs. Calling a spade a spade, we have had one significant post-season in 20 years, and that was tarnished by a first round loss in the NCAA.

Huh?

Iowa won the Big 10 tournament in 2001, finished 2nd in 2002 (and OSU had to vacate their championship), and won again in 2005.

How's that 1 in 20?

I forgot about 2001. Can't count 2002 when we went to the NIT and lost in the first round. So we had two. both more than 13 years ago.

Oof Marone. This was not the point of the original post at all.

That should tell you all you need to know about conference tournaments. Iowa makes the finals as an NIT team.

Fran has been tremendously consistent winning 20 games and getting Iowa into the tournament and typically advancing to round 2.

The current state of either program is Fran vs Prohm and I take Fran all day. Prohm had 1 great year with Hoiberg recruits.

Comparing conference tournaments is apples and oranges. The Big 10 had 8 tournament teams last year. Iowa destroyed the team head to head that won the Big 12 tournament.

Fran will qualify this year again while Prohm has a disaster on his hands.

Iowa is looking to bring back a monster team next year while ISU looks like another rebuild season in store.

Fran is way better finding talent while Prohm gets 4 stars like Lewis and Zion who are terrible.

Same guy that said the past ISU football season was a success considering they lost their 2 best players. Clown.
It’s funny how Iowa has had unexpected turn and the same thing happen to them yet they find a way to win 9-10 games a year still. Happens (arguably, I don’t even agree) to Iowa state and they turn into a dumpster fire.

these were the players that developed under Fran

Marble as a SR 1st team All BT 2nd rnd NBA pick
White FR AA 1st team All BT 2nd rnd NBA pick
Uthoff 1st team All BT 2nd Team AA
Jok 1st team All BT
Cook 2nd team All BT
JBo 3rd team All BT
Garza mid season 1st team AA in the final group for the NPOY and BT POY

he has done far better than what Prohm as done.

wonder what Foster is thinking now about his choice. next year Iowa on paper will be far better than this season. what's does ISU have to look forward too?

ISU’s last 10 years prior to this one was a pretty good run but it’s hard to evaluate too. Toss this around, they made 3 sweet 16’s but beat only 1 power 5/6 opponent in those three sweet 16 runs - yes 1. In fact I’m not sure they beat anyone else in any of those runs besides 1 power 5/6 team. They were knocked out of the tournament three times by the B1G alone.

Their conference championship requires 3 wins, which includes at least 1 win against the bottom feeder teams of the conference and it’s played virtually at home where you can expect fans from at most two teams; KU & ISU. Contrast that to the B1G tournament which now includes 14 teams, the tournament locations and the number of large fan bases that travel.

A major difference is then is the overall quality of the conference they play in which in turn yields better opportunity to finish higher in their standings which in turn provides them better seeds which in turn creates better opportunities to make the sweet 16. That’s the difference.

I will argue that part of Iowa’s tournament advancement issue in the last 20-30 years is seeds earned. It has been extremely difficult in the B1G to earn a top 2-3 finish which then translates to a seed #5 or below. We’ve had way too many 7-10’s which means you are running into a top 8-10 in the nation, sometimes the champ, in round 2. The difference is the leagues costs 2-4 seed lines.

Fran Fraschilla is just gawd awful. Terriible. The worst shill among shills. Just as bad or worse than Peterson.

Thank you baby Jesus that Randy does not cover Iowa. His takes on Twitter are usually hilariously awful.

Peterson is as much of a homer as that d!psh!t announcer for the 'clones, Walters. He's not a reporter, he's an extension of their SID.

I hope an extension for Prohm

Foster made the right move if he thinks he can make the league as an early entrant. He’d be fighting for minutes next year at Iowa IMO. He’ll play from day 1 at ISU.

Wendy twitted the other day that someone in the press box cheered for the opposing team and that it broke code for journalists. I read it like five times in a row. Dumbfounded. The professional cheerleader.

And they have each coached at their respective schools how many years?

So, Iowa State is the only school with attrition? This article is putting lipstick on a pig.

Playing at isu he has zero chance of making the league as an early entrant.

I never paid attention to him but heard he was a massive homer. Then he was on local radio and they asked him about ISUs disappointing season and he seemed confused by that notion and spun it as being a success. I had to laugh. I guess he missed all the pre season hype. more likely ignored it after the fact. That type of reporting of my team would piss me off.

these are Fran teams finishes
1th 1
10th 1
7th 1
6th 3
5th 1
3rd 2
the best seed they received was a 7 Twice in the year they finished 3rd
the year when they finished in 5th they ended up in the NIT.
2 no post season.
3 NIT's
4 NCAAT

even in their best seasons they received 7 seeds not the type of seed to look at a sweet 16 realistically.

this season get a 4th, 5th or 6 seed and the sweet 16 is well within this years team reach.

get in the West region and a Elite is possible.

Meanwhile the AD sends a tweet out trolling his own fans lol.

“So 7 second left, KU up 3 and Baylor ball. Bill Self calls time out and then decides to not foul and let it play out. Baylor missed shot - KU wins. Interesting - I recall many Cyclone fans and local media saying always foul!”

Randy Peterson is receiving cash on the side from Janie Pollock to write positive Cyclone stories to keep the alumni and fans from revolting.

Foster screwed up. I’m not saying he shoulda picked the Hawks - but certainly not the Clones. He had other choices.
It came down to playing for the 10th best team in the Big12 or (roughly) the 10th best team in the country.

With terrible instincts & decision making like that, dude’s got upper management written all over him.

They will look forward to the 2021-22 season
Even that season could be rough. By that time Solo, Johnson(if he's any good) and Lewis will also have graduated.

Their returning team would be:
Grill
Jackson, could be good player
Conditt, if he stays (rumors floating that he's going to transfer with Tyrese leaving)
Bolton, good player
Griffin

Honestly, kind of poor.

Their incoming Freshman class looks good, assuming Dudley is still going to come. Whispers there again, that he may not because of family stuff, but now re-assured that he will be coming.
Looking at starting lineup of
Foster
Jackson
Bolton
Dubar
Conditt

With Blackwell first off bench.
Not a bad team. Again, will really depend on both Conditt and Dudley sticking around.

Iowa's starting lineup at that point would be:

Joe
CJF
Connor
Weezy
Ogundele/Nunge

Pat first off bench
Then Murray's, Uhlis and Perkins.
Iowa is really going to need someone in the post after Garza or we could struggle too. Those top 4 are all good perimeter players, and Pat, Uhlis, and Perkins will only add to that talent, but our posts worry me.

Obviously a lot can change, but even in two years, I'm not sure ISU is looking at an NCAA tourney with what they currently have and coming in, combined.

Randy is an idiot but he does have a point that this season is in part because a couple of the guys prohm recruited left before anyone predicted when they signed. Although, I would argue a big reason Wigginton left is because of how Prohm handled him last year and that is squarely on him.

They have a decent class coming in but nothing that will help immediately. I don't think they are set to get back next year unless guys surprised or make giant improvements.

By the way , how's his HS team doing? Don't hear much about it.

Oskaloosa is currently 8-13 in Class 3A. Their next game is against 8-12 Carlisle. I think XF has missed time due to injury or sickness? Not sure. They won the 3A State Title in 2019. They lost in the 3A Title Game in 2018.
