is ranked #83 out of 106 FBS punters. So, what you are saying is that there are worse punters?
Here's a list of notable teams with punters with a worse net average than Colten:
  • Miami
  • Wyoming
  • Michigan
  • K State
  • FSU
  • Oregon
I know we are beating this to a pulp, however in Ferentz ball, field position is everything. I think it's time to see what Gersonde can do, perhaps during the bye week we'll revisit. That said, our net return yardage (punt return defense) ranks #44 nationally, a little better than middle of the road.

Multiple factors in the punting game which have been discussed on here previously. However when the punt goes to your own 30 yard line, you're not going to win much putting your defense immediately on its heels

Yep, agreed. It was maddening to watch Sat afternoon, same song and dance. Iowa pinned back deep, 3 and out, short punt, MSU on the plus side of the field, rinse and repeat!!! Insert obvious audibles on offense and not using Toren Young and that pretty much sums it up.

@rivercityjazzman has stated he has a great leg. I trust @rivercityjazzman .

If he feels comfortable doing so, I appreciate his evaluation.

I believe things are better than we think. The rugby kicks are designed to eliminate returns and of course would not be as long typically. We've seen him bomb at least one. We don't know what other conditions have impacted him.

Until my man the jazzman states his case, I'm not drawing any conclusions.

Welp, when the offense can't obtain a first down inside the ten yard line and you are punting from the end zone, you usually not able to take the three steps to kick...so you rugby it and this is what you end up with.
All goes back to fielding punts inside the ten.

We've seen what Colten is capable of (50 yard conventional punt in a previous game). In warmups prior to, and at half-time, of the MSU game, he was hitting bomb after bomb. Unfortunately, he is struggling to transfer his non-game performance to the game. Only he can make that transition, and it is a transition that some players never make. I sure hope he does. Regardless, I wouldn't be surprised if we see some changes coming, in some form. KF is on record as saying he may use both punters at some point.

The field position thing involves a lot more than the punter. Yes that spot has to get better, but maybe the offense could move it out from inside the 10, maybe the defense could pin a team inside their own territory instead of buckling down at midfield or in Iowa territory

Not unlike the golfer who bombs drives on the range and can't keep it on the course during the round.

The brain is a fragile organ. o_O

Or the 3-point shooter who only makes them in practice. Not naming any names

What can you tell us about Gersonde? All I have seen of him is at halftime.

I thought I read in an article that opponents are seeing Colten R.'s short punts where he would get a nice roll, and are putting someone up short and catching it after a flight of 30 yards or so. So his average may be going down.

Why can't we just go down under and literally pick any of the many aussies that can absolutely boom the rock
When i was in college one of my roommates from australia could absolutely boom it and it always blew my mind cause he's just a golfer doing this but he would kick barefoot instead.

We did literally pick an aussie, gave him a scholarship, and he never contributed.

I remember that guy! Awesome punter on film. The problem was that he needed 5 seconds to go through his routine and could never learn to grab the snap, one big step and pound it. Needed much longer than any team could reasonably give him. Too bad. He had a big leg.

I think punting is one of the crazy positions that pre-game reps don't always translate to the field. Watched enough NFL punters in the preseason the last 3 or so years to see them hit bomb after bomb (and I mean 60-65) and not have it translate to the game even if the situation called for it.

Are you telling me that you can't just grab a guy and make a quality Division-1 punter out of him? Because every idiot on the internet tells me differently.

He's long-limbed and pretty solid. He hit the single longest punt in fall camp, 63 yards (in the air), if I recall correctly. He can hit beautiful Aussie and conventional punts. I haven't seen him rugby.

Not saying I'm pleased with the punting this year, but I did find it interesting that Rastetter's net punt average is 1 yard better than Coluzzi's last year. I would have never believed it.

Not surprised to see Wyoming on this list after witnessing their punter in the first game of the year.

The difference is punting "big" when a big punt is needed. His yards are from dribblers. Presently, he is not dangerous, strategic, or consistent.

Totally agree. Just can't believe this guy's average is even in the same zip code as Ron's.
