Rating Recruiting Classes How is it Done?

Does anyone really know how they rate recruiting classes? How does Iowa get ranked at #38 when they land four #4 stars and finish with a 3.19 rating when someone like Minnesota ranks #28 when they sign 3 #4 stars and have a 3.03 rating .

Is the ranking based on numbers or some equation or is it just arbitrary. Do the amount of recruits signed impact the final rating ?

Just curious ...

In short, yes it's because of numbers.

You get points for every committed player as long as they are rated at least a 2 star, so Minnesota having 9 more players gives them more points almost by default.

Well partially true. Rivals only counts the highest ranked 20 recruits.

It's pretty simple really.

If a player commits to Alabama, that's 100 points. Ohio State, 99 points, etc.

I appreciate and track rivals rankings, but tbh I prefer 247sports. I feel like they break down players better who have the same star ratings (I.e. a .87 three star vs a .83 three star) and I like that they do the composite, though I wish ESPN's scores would be removed from the composite

Don't pay any attention to rankings, they mean nothing. Remember iowa had a top 10 recruit in Blake Larsen, I don't think he ever played.

Meanwhile Josey Jewell was a 2 star.
Micah Hyde 2 star athlete
Josh Jackson 2 star athlete.

These ranking services are good ways to get players out there, but their rankings are so subjective and really don't mean squat. Like the poster above said, if a player commits to Bama or OSU their overall star level and composite score will improve. Also to get ranked they have to go to a bunch of camps and workouts. There are players out there who 2-3 star players who could hang with the 5 stars just the same.

What's wrong with ESPN ratings? 247 composite includes rivals themselves and ESPN is that the only 3?

I just don't trust ESPN - they seem to update less often, are often missing prospects that are late bloomers (sometimes even prospects that are not late bloomers), and I honestly wonder how invested they are with that aspect of their business with all of their cuts elsewhere. I much prefer Rivals and 247sports even more, though 247 can grade a little harsher in terms of stars and is still in transition a bit since acquiring Scout. And yes, it only uses 247, Rivals, and ESPN in its composite I believe, though Scout is included in the 247 grades in some form after the acquisition

Yea I saw there was some type of merger a couple months ago. Not sure how to look at ESPN.
