I'm remote, several people I work with are office-bound. It's about 9:25 where I'm at. I've been heads down working since about 7:45am, having just stepped away to take a dump.

Up to now, most every 'Teams dot' I saw was yellow or blank because most of the office saps were on their 30-60 minute commutes strolling to their work areas from the parking ramp, standing in line to get coffee, catching up on weekend conversations with people in the office, any other time wasting activity you can name.

I haven't received one email or IM yet, but, like clockwork, I'll start getting lit up between 9:30 and 10:00.

Fast forward to 4:00 - I'll get a flurry of crap from about 3:30-4:15 then all the dots will turn yellow again as I work right up until 5:15 or so when I have to get my kids.

I'm all for purposeful time in the office, with people. However, anyone who just defaults to culture and collaboration jibberish has been brainwashed or is insecure working with autonomy.

My company refers to it as "Together at Gemba"... what a heaping crock of shit 🤣 🤣 🤣

How is posting about your co-workers on HOBT different than your co-workers chatting about the superbowl on their way to their desk?
Because he’s taking a dump. That’s much more important than putting something into the body.

I could easily argue against the op. I work from home one day a week most weeks. I am by far less productive at home. Hell when it’s nice outside I tend to get caught up doing things outside that aren’t work related. My little dot turns yellow.
It also depends on the amount of work I have that needs to get done. If I have stuff I need to get done, doesn’t matter if I’m in office or at home.

Sounds like you have a discipline problem. Good idea for you to be supervised in your work.

So... how about you becoming the "remote working trainer" for your HR department. I'm glad to hear you're at the top 1% of remote worker efficiency

Lol - so there's no other employees at your workplace?
I would bet we have more employees at my workplace than most companies in Iowa.
You just admitted you can't be trusted to be productive on your own.

So easy.
Where did I ever say I can’t be trusted to be productive. If anything I said I can be productive. You know, where I said if I have work that needs to get done, I get it done. Doesn’t matter if it is in office or at home.

my work ethic is dictated by my responsibilities, not anyone looking over my shoulder to check on me

working from home isn't for everyone and there's definitely some tasks that are harder or more annoying at home...but anyone who thinks every employee needs to physically be in an office everyday has a very different relationship with work than i do

So you are supervised. SMH

You're an outlier if you're truly as productive as you say you are (I don't believe you). And for the vast majority of work from homers, they aren't doing a whole lot of "work" from home.

Corporate America has never been able to truly devise good work measurement and productivity data systems.

Who is driving this go back to the office mentality?

So they want you in the office so they can watch you. The mgmt just cant handle people working at home I guess.

As a former corporate Training and Management Director I was given the task of creating a new Perf Mgmt system and I got a couple of my colleagues from my department. It really focused on top people get 98- 100% of their work done correctly, very good employees get 95-98% of their work done correctly and on time etc.

If they cant then management needs to hire and train better or just not give them much of a raise at all since workers should be able to get almost all of the work done correctly, and if they are trained correctly and have a good work ethic then maybe the company goals are too high.

Then that is the Companies problem if they are not working much at home as they are either sluffing off or arent given enough work. Again Companies do not know how to manage their work and workforce very well from my experience

Like many things.... It depends on the employee.

Some employees like the OP are disciplined and kick a$$ from home.

Others are distracted and running errands everyday that they are working from home. There are people out there that try keeping their young kid at home while working remotely.... Tell me how productive and focused they are on their job?

I like going into the office, just to be in the routine and see coworkers.... but I'm and to have the office 10 mins away from home. If I had a 30+ min drive, I'd be 50/50

For me - I work for Wells Fargo; so my team is spread out from coast to coast. Every single meeting I have is virtual; there’s no one I work with in person that is essential to my job performance.

Work from home or In Office depends on the employee and company.

I work from home two mornings a week. But, I have a vested stake in my business.....so I truly want to be productive. The people I work with that chose to stay in the office have been honest in saying they get more work done when they clock into and out of the office environment.

Gemba walks, elevator meetings, skip level meetings, kaizen, six sigma, green belt........we waste more time doing these bs things. I could cut my day down by 2-2.5 hrs without any of these and be just as productive

I'd ok with forced office work if companies stopped bothering employees after they leave the office. Either I can work from home or I can't. If you want me to work from home too, particularly outside of normal work hours, then you should pay a premium for it.
