Stanford has a huge advantage at QB in Hogan who will be playing in his 4th straight bowl game including three Rose Bowls. He has thrown for over 9,000 yards and has a career QB rating of 154. We have to not only stop McCaffery, we have to limit Hogan as well. Hogan has more yards, more TDs and a higher QB rating than Conner Cook and the game is in their backyard. I think we need to score 31 points to win, unless we can control the clock and keep their offense off the field or have a big turnover advantage.

Iowa has the advantage in that Stanford thinks they are better because they perceive themselves as more talented and the Hawkeyes haven't faced a team like them.

It reminds me of Georgia Tech.

Go Hawks!!!

One thing I'll give Stanford is that Shaw is not nearly the arrogant tool that Johnson is for GT. He won't just sit back and assume his own brilliance is automatically going to win the game.

And this is strictly your opinion. I hope you're right but you have no idea what they are thinking.

Here's Stanford's schedule with rankings by points allowed:

Notre Dame: 34
California: 88
Oregon: 114
USC: 57
Colorado: 71
Washington St: 83
UCLA: 52
Washington: 12
Northwestern: 7
UCF: 118
Arizona: 106

Not hard to put up points when only three of your opponents are ranked defensively in the top 50.

Here's MSU's schedule for comparison:

Oregon: 114
Western Michigan: 78
Central Michigan: 33
Air Force: 40
Purdue: 112
Rutgers: 104
Michigan: 11
Nebraska: 75
Iowa: 15
Indiana: 116
Maryland: 103
Ohio State: 2
Penn State: 30

MSU played 6 teams in the top 50 defensively.

MSU is also ranked 19th defensively, including 7th best against the run, while Stanford is 38th and 44th against the run. We should be able to move the ball on them.

It's funny you say that because my buddy's nephew plays for Stanford and per my buddy, Shaw is arrogant...I'll admit though that he doesn't come across that way to outsiders.

Our thoughts on players and coaches are probably way off compared to what they really are like in person. My cousin is on the Arkansas coaching staff and he says the Beilema is a great guy and loves working for him even though most people think different of him.

I don't think you can be a successful D1 football coach (and Shaw has been very successful) without having an arrogant streak. You have to have clear belief in yourself and what you're doing and you have to be where the buck stops.

Sure, I don't know either Shaw or Johnson, but Johnson always comes off as a smug "I'm smarter than you" type who believes his offensive brilliance will carry the day.

Disagree. There are probably more arrogant head coaches than in the past. But there are other, and better, ways to show everyone you are the leader, and you're in charge: Self-confidence and wisdom, and i think a truly wise and self-confident person is not arrogant.

Arrogance is a character flaw. It can alienate players, assistant coaches, and fans.

How many times have I told you NOT to use facts to support your arguments? It makes the rest of us, well, look stupid. We will win because our fans will Be Bold, and Wear Gold.

IF McCaffery only hurts Iowa, on offense, and NOT on special teams. Iowa will win.
His numbers are sick. Make anyone, but him beat us,

Hogan may have some numbers, but would anyone on here want to trade CJ for him? Would anyone on our team?

Agree Hawks probably need to score +31. Also:
- Win the turnover battle by +2
- Limit big plays by McCaffery
- Punt out of bounds (away from McCaffrey)
- Watch the McCaffery trick play (him passing) late in the game

Good post CP, we win. And our O is going to be very interesting I believe. I think we score a lot and I think we frustrate the hell out of them.

Hogan has more yards, more TDs and a higher QB rating than Conner Cook and the game is in their backyard.

Hogan has less yards (2644 vs. 2921), the same amount of TDs (24), more INTs (7 vs. 5) and was sacked more often (18 vs. 14) than Cook. Hogan was more efficient when Stanford did pass, but Stanford relies more on the run than Sparty.

Bielema is one of those guys, to make an example, who will take a bullet for anyone he keeps in his "circle of trust"..........and tells everyone else to gft. (Only a slight exaggeration btw)

Shaw sounds like he takes a different approach in that he wants to keep up outward appearances while being confident within his closed circles.

Needless to say, there are many ways to show your two faces....

If there's one thing the Pac-12 is known for, it's shutdown defenses...

So you disagree that playing in 3 of the last 4 Rose Bowls is not an advantage? Not only Stanford as a team but having the same QB in those games? I hope we can put up lots of points on their defense, cause I think we'll need 'em.
The Rose Bowl IS A FIELD. It's got grass, with chalk stripes, and two end zones.
Iowa played an MSU team in the BIG Championship that had Connor Cook as their starting QB for the past three season, and had been in two of four previous BIG championships ... were you voicing the same "advantage" thing about MSU when you faced them?
