REBOUNDING!!! On Jan 4: IOWA Ranked #329 out of 364 D1 Teams in Rebounding Margin. 20 Second Chance Pts & 46-34 Reb. Margin for Clown U

Our next opponent, Utah, is +9 in rebounding margin.
If form holds, Iowa gets killed on the boards again in this one.
They need to do something to shrink that margin. Unlike much of the garbage noncon, this game against utah actually will be impactful on their NET.
Might be a game to see more of Mulvey.

Mulvey might not see a meaningful minute the rest of the year with everyone healthy. For whatever reason he's become Fran's last man off the bench.

It's too bad Fran didn't give him the backup minutes to Freeman against our weaker competition, rather than wasting minutes on Brauns. You might have a legitimate 6'11'' backup center the rest of the season, as opposed to trying to fit some undersized guys against bigger and more aggressive rebounding teams. Dembelee played a lot more aggressively coming off the bench against ISU.

those extra 9 possessions Utah is currently getting could make the difference in a close game

The problem isn't who's playing back up center, it's that the starting center isn't a very good rebounder and the guy playing the 4 is overmatched but Fran is determined to play him 38 minutes a game.

I thought playing Payton at the 4 was a better option than the 3 because he can't guard anyone on the perimeter and he always had decent rebounding numbers. It's better for offensive spacing but it's clearly giving up too much in other areas and he's not taking advantage of the shot opportunity on the offensive end either.

Payton needs to rebound better or play less in favore of guys who can rebound like Traore and Koch.

Obviously he's not going to play less for Fran McCaffery but he may end up moving him back to the 3.

I went to see just how bad Iowa's rebounding currently is. What follows INCLUDES last night's games.

NOTE below that Utah (+8) is a good rebounding team.

Also check out below how good Drake (+9) is.

IOWA (-4) is currently ranked #326 out of 364 D1 teams in rebounding margin.

Rebound Margin Rankings:

+13: BYU, Idaho State (these 2 teams lead the nation)

Other notables:

+12: Michigan State (#4 in the nation)

+11: Illinois (#8 in the nation)

+9: Drake (#18 in the nation)

+8: Utah State (#23 in the nation)

+8: Utah (#32 in the nation)

+6: Iowa State (#56 in the nation)

Iowa (9-3) beats Utah (8-3) today, 95-88.

Once again Iowa struggled in the rebounding department. For this game it was MINUS 8 (35-27).

Iowa pulled away late from an average team today. The bottom line still remains the same: you simply cannot be one of the worst rebounding teams in the country and expect to win close games.

Hawkeyes are not the best team in the country no!
But they play well enough that they can be there in nearly every game they play this season . Really competitive and every team has weaknesses. Tonight I thought Ladji had a pretty good game . He played pretty fundamental basketball, which is what was needed.

that rebound deficit is gonna cost us, though, just like it cost us vs Iowa State

You really surprised, Iowa under Fran never plays defense or rebounds as a Team, They are only not brutal in the Years they have great individual rebounders or defenders, This Team has none that fit the description, Not a priority in Fran's recruiting or System, Iowa will never make a run in March under Fran for these shortcomings . You have to have guard play, play defense and rebound to cut down nets in March

You are right; the poor Iowa defense is a 15 year (Fran's tenure) broken record.

I checked just now; per KenPom, Iowa's Defense is ranked #93 in the country; the Offense is #20. Overall Iowa is the 44th ranked team.

And you are right again; teams ranked in the 90's in defense don't do much in the NCAA Tournament (if they are even invited, that is)

Iowa (10-3) outrebounded New Hampshire (2-13) by 6 (44-38).

KenPom, however, ranks New Hampshire as the #359 team in the country (out of 364).

It will be interesting to see how things trend now that our next 18 games are all conference games.

Regarding defense and success in the NCAA tournament, I've looked into this but never written up an article - the bottom line is that you need to be good at both offense and defense to have a decent chance to make a run and even then your chances aren't that high. If you are good defensively but have a lousy offense your chances are actually slightly worse than if it's the other way around (good offense / bad defense), but it's a minor difference and your chances are lousy either way. Bottom line is that both ends of the floor are important. This adage that "offense sells but defense wins" is pure nonsense - you need both to win.

I'll have a couple articles on rebounding published in the coming days so stay tuned. I think you'll find them interesting.

20 Clown second chance points
tonight off 18 Clown offensive rebounds.

100% unacceptable, but it's the same sh*tty lack of rebounding, different game.

The Clowns win 89-80 after Iowa had led for 33:28 of the game (the game was tied for 3:27).

Iowa led by 13 points in the first half (39-26 with 4:09 to go) but blow the opportunity.
It’s so weird to me how little Fran cares about some fundamentals that lead to winning basketball. Rebounding and half court defense.
