Recruiting methods

We don't necessary need a guy. My wife could run this program on the money side better than anyone I know. So many connections and skills to get it done. Her job is getting money and she is one of the best in the country. The most accredited in her field. Her uncle is the man that owned the all the Heartlands before he sold them off except Iowa City and he would be good start. Her life is wrestling and promoting it. She builds clubs.

I would love to see her get a chance. She'd find every loophole in this mess. And we could move back to Iowa City. I'm done dreaming and talking shit.

Step forward and do it Sans! Would be great if you and your wife made the bold commitment! I understand fundraising and nonprofit work fairly well and could help on a limited basis.

It would be great to get you out of the flood plain finally.

Also, her uncle is an ahole.

Haha, he's a little crazy. I never witnessed the asshole side.

Obviously it would never happen with my wife, but I would love to see her try. She just has so many connections and her job is getting money. We should have the greatest wrestling facilities in the country. Again, I'll say this program is run by fools. There is no good reason we don't have the best of everything. I get so tired of talking to Iowa's young stud wrestlers wanting to go to tOSU for their strength program, PSU for the fun and OSU for Smith's coaching. Nobody besides my kids would only go to Iowa. Something has to change. I can't settle for third or forth place after growing up watching domination.

"Again, I'll say this program is run by fools."

wow... just wow...sometimes the truth hurts but this is as brutal as I have heard.

No one I know is satisfied with 4th-- but fools?? unreal

Just how many of Iowa's "young stud" wrestlers have gone to any of those three schools during the past few years?

Yeah, SansSouci writes some cringe-worthy things and "fools" is poorly chosen, but he, Gobblin and others have very valid points. We're talking about IOWA HAWKEYE WRESTLING and the university has allowed the program to slip. Money and facilities should never be an issue --- for an analogy, Alabama / Michigan / USC (football) and Kentucky / Duke / UCLA (basketball) have all the resources they need. There should have been/needs to be significant, aggressive fundraising. Sure, the football team is the money-maker, but it's not the signature sport. Wrestling is not an expensive sport to fund, and there needs to be a coordinated effort between the university, HWC, the RTC, former wrestlers, alumni/boosters/funders, and others. It should have never gotten to this point - years ago the HWC, RTC, facilities, recruiting "techniques" etc. should have been developed far above any other school's program.

It all starts with the vision and efforts of Gary Barta and Tom Brands. If BOTH don't make decisions to go all-out and put together a TEAM of businessmen, marketers, salesmen, etc. (as Gobblin stated), then Iowa will never again challenge PSU, tOSU and others. I would hope that they have sat down and put together an action plan of how they will build the HWC, fund whatever needs funded, get creative with scholarship offers, etc. Gable and Kurdlemeier before him were groundbreaking in their marketing of Iowa wrestling, making it something everyone wanted to be a part of. Now PSU is taking a page from their play book, with their own twist to it. Did Iowa just get complacent? (One thing that is INEXCUSABLE is to fail to thank every donor, no matter the amount --- whenever anyone donates even $5 to my projects, I thank them profusely, to make them feel like they've really done a great thing...and they have!).

Randy, for a while I've been struggling to start a professional level, technical institute in Latin America, so I know it's not a simple path forward. I chuckle when people say "All you need to do is spread the word on social media" or "Just get connected with wealthy business people" and many other ideas that are well-meaning, but just aren't feasible in my situation. The path forward for the Iowa wrestling program isn't a simple 1-2-3 solution, and that's why Barta and Brands need to have a weekend retreat and decide on a course of action, and aggressively implement it.

Sounds like she needs to contact Dan Gable and see what his thoughts are on this. His name would be a great start. He should know thousand of people who could or would help. There are a lot of ex wrestlers who own their own businesses. Also, there are a few grads who are making it big in Hollywood and come back to football games alot. Let's move on this and not just talk....

Very well said, Mendoza.

One thing that's becoming evident in this thread is that there are a number of bright, talented Iowa wrestling fans who want to be part of the solution. That's encouraging.

I've donated to HWC for many years (5 digits per year, and wifey just let me increase it!!), and to another non-rev sport thru the Foundation, and to a Biz school dept thru the Foundation. I'll be in IC later this month for a Foundation event and will ask "what's the deal". In the meantime, I'll ask the Coaches how we as fans can help.

A lot of constructive comments here, certainly interest. The common goal is get the Hawks back to #1. For us fans, we need an answer to how we can help. I will say in re the other non-rev sport, that the coach had a vision to improve facilities and the Foundation supported him. I can't imagine why that would not happen with Wrasslin.

Good thread, and let's keep it productive.

Good job outta you, bnicolls! That's impressive. Way to go. Couldn't agree more. And I agree -- great thread, and let's keep it positive and productive.

Hi bnicolls - please send me an email if you're interested in discussing this topic further (peking1059@hotmail.com). When there's an issue that I care about and would like to see something done, I believe in taking action. Some of the people who post on here have excellent thoughts but maybe are unsure how to act upon that. If we as supporters of Iowa Hawkeye wrestling want to be a part of the move forward, a coordinated effort needs to be considered. I'm willing to be a part of that, if others will join in. (p.s. my name is Paul)

Things have been slower lately but look what has been done over the last 3 months. This push should help the coaches land a great class to go with last years top ranked class. The spring/summer of 2017 are the biggest events in Iowa wrestling since Gable retired. Reading through this thread it is amazing how far the HWC has come in such a short time.
