Yeah, SansSouci writes some cringe-worthy things and "fools" is poorly chosen, but he, Gobblin and others have very valid points. We're talking about IOWA HAWKEYE WRESTLING and the university has allowed the program to slip. Money and facilities should never be an issue --- for an analogy, Alabama / Michigan / USC (football) and Kentucky / Duke / UCLA (basketball) have all the resources they need. There should have been/needs to be significant, aggressive fundraising. Sure, the football team is the money-maker, but it's not the signature sport. Wrestling is not an expensive sport to fund, and there needs to be a coordinated effort between the university, HWC, the RTC, former wrestlers, alumni/boosters/funders, and others. It should have never gotten to this point - years ago the HWC, RTC, facilities, recruiting "techniques" etc. should have been developed far above any other school's program.
It all starts with the vision and efforts of Gary Barta and Tom Brands. If BOTH don't make decisions to go all-out and put together a TEAM of businessmen, marketers, salesmen, etc. (as Gobblin stated), then Iowa will never again challenge PSU, tOSU and others. I would hope that they have sat down and put together an action plan of how they will build the HWC, fund whatever needs funded, get creative with scholarship offers, etc. Gable and Kurdlemeier before him were groundbreaking in their marketing of Iowa wrestling, making it something everyone wanted to be a part of. Now PSU is taking a page from their play book, with their own twist to it. Did Iowa just get complacent? (One thing that is INEXCUSABLE is to fail to thank every donor, no matter the amount --- whenever anyone donates even $5 to my projects, I thank them profusely, to make them feel like they've really done a great thing...and they have!).
Randy, for a while I've been struggling to start a professional level, technical institute in Latin America, so I know it's not a simple path forward. I chuckle when people say "All you need to do is spread the word on social media" or "Just get connected with wealthy business people" and many other ideas that are well-meaning, but just aren't feasible in my situation. The path forward for the Iowa wrestling program isn't a simple 1-2-3 solution, and that's why Barta and Brands need to have a weekend retreat and decide on a course of action, and aggressively implement it.
