I found it interesting that ISU, Nebraska, and Michigan all only have one kid from their home state committed.

Michigan State has 3 Michigan kids in the fold.
Wisconsin has 4 from Wisconsin
Iowa has 5 from Iowa
Minnesota has 8 from Minnesota

Minnesota may have a little too much home cooking but those first 3 are surprising.

Coincidentally, Iowa kids are also committed to go to Nebraska, Arkansas, MN, Wyo, Northern Ill, Bowling Green UNI, and South Dakota State.

Iowa has a population of 3.1 million and two P5 schools.

Minnesota has a population of 5.5 million and one P5 school.

So "too much home cooking" may not be accurate considering we have 5 and they have 8.

Regardless of that anal retentive reply, recruiting is a difficult game. Kirk has to make the call, "Do I recruit a midwest kid who is elite in his territory, or do I recruit a kid from a hotbed state who isn't getting big time offers?"

I commend Kirk on his recruiting. Sometimes I scratch my head and wonder why Karras, Ruhland and Bobek didn't get a sniff. But overall he does a pretty good job. Every class seems to contain a few kids with bluechip offers. Then there are the kids with multiple non-elite P5 offers. Then there are kids with Iowa as their only P5 offer. Once they arrive it's Kirks job to make the team-chemistry work and instill an insane work ethic. If those two things pan out Iowa can do impressive things.

They after bigger fish at Michigan than the talent in state?
ISU think they are better than Iowa's table scraps?
Nebraska going Hollywood as well?

Population has some to do with it but it isn't the only factor when shopping for the groceries.

Given the population of that state, it is surprising that Michigan and MSU have so few in state commitments. We will end up tying Sparty and leading the Whimperines.

Michigan/MSU did pass on the Thorpe award winner. Genius on their part. As far as "taking too many locals" goes. I guess 8 is too many. Or maybe a sucktacular program like Minny didn't have better options?

Yup, I'm fine with us taking their "little fish" ;)

I did notice on ESPN they had the recruiting rankings in the Big 10 and had Iowa currently ranked 8th. I was a little surprised that Minnesota was ranked ahead of the Hawks.
That could change if one of their higher rated recruits(Dedrick Snelson) decides on where to go...He has visited Maryland and UCF recently and is currently scheduled to visit PSU this weekend...His next possible verbal will be his 3rd or 4th verbal to a different school....

Who cares where they come from? Get the top talent. Jesus.

Michigan under previous coaches has always mined the talent in Ohio. And of interest to me is that N. Dak. St., the multi-year winner of the FCS had 34 kids from Minn. on their roster

I'm not. Minnesota can always compete head to head in recruiting vs Iowa.. Terrible season vs dream season, and yet I still like our class better.

You might as well chalk up Iowa's recruiting class to always finish somewhere in the range of 4-9 in the Big Ten. Lets face it, we will never finish ahead of OSU, MICH, PSU, and MSU. Those 4 teams always get the top recruits. This past year Iowa was done with their recruiting before the season even started, they had something like 20 commits before the season.

Iowa coaches instead of looking for top talent, they go after players that will fit their program and become great players. Reese Morgan does a great job of landing the in-state talent and I think he has a great eye for potential in a player. Iowa has landed some top talents in the past, but its difficult to compete with all the top teams in the nation. Iowa city isn't exactly a top desitnation for college kids.

Iowa will be fine moving forward, I think you will see the recruiting rankings rise in the next couple of years. Getting Epensea is a huge get and will pay off in the long run for both recruiting and playing.

MSU will always get the top recruits?????? Why? Our program was ahead of theirs 10 years ago. They weren't killing it with John L Smith on the recruiting trail. The answer is they got a coach who isn't afraid to recruit against the big boys and has been able to build MSU's brand while providing consistent results, unlike our coach who likes to call us a "developmental" program after 17 yrs and leaves at least one position group exposed every year because we have no depth as we are in process of developing players. Yeah the homers will point to our record with a VERY favorable schedule this year, and it was a nice year, but if you look at what happens typically over the last 10 years, we usually finish were we recruit....well outside the top 25. Current class ranked 40th by rivals. The previous 5 seasons were downright bad to mediocre because that's how we recruit. Hopefully the new facilities and a nice season springboard us to a class ranked in the top 30 where we belong but I'm not holding my breath.

MSU has a better geography than Iowa. Detroit is home-state for them; they border Ohio; they are closer to PA/MD/NJ/DC and play in the BIG East which gives them more exposure there; and they are nearly as close to Chicago as us.

As far as metros go, Iowa's only real advantage over MSU is Minneapolis (home Minnesota and not a football hotbed) and STL/KC (not true BIG markets).

As far as programs go, Iowa probably has an advantage in facilities, fan support, and resources, but MSU certainly has a geographic advantage.

This was more point with my post. Iowa city is in the middle of nowhere. Trying to get kids to come here is a big step, there are alot of great players in Michigan, Ohio, PA, and other states. That's why I stated that OSU, MICH, MSU, and PSU will always have the advantage in recruiting. Iowa will every once in a while beat them, but it won't be a steady trend. Iowa coaches go after players they "can get". They do not throw hail marys and see if they can get a kid or not. They find the kids that fit their system.

I realize last year was an out of the ordinary year (weak schedule blah blah). They won every game with average recruits and when got faced with tougher opponents they got beat no shame in that. If KF can continue to recruit top 40 classes and win 8-9 games a year, I am okay with that.

this is exactly the kind of THIRD RATE LOSER attitude that needs to be stomped out. Your kind of pathetically grateful for what we have fan needs to be tarred, feathered and run out of town on a rail.

Crazy how that never correlates to compete with Iowa head to head on the field, on the court, or on the mat. Just baffling isn't it. Last 15 games head to head Iowa 11 wins and Minny 4....LOL are you done yet?

Just being realistic sorry. If you think Iowa is going to be top 5 every year and top 5 in recruiting your dreaming. Good luck holding on for that to happen. Iowa will never be top 5 in recruiting its just the way it goes. Sorry but IA City is not that great of place. Maybe with the new facilities we might bump up to top 25 annually, but we are never going to be to top.

8-9 wins is good for me. GO HAWKS, ill continue to purchase season tickets if they can do that.

Yeah and kansas gets recruits for basketball because of their great location and weather. Just win
