Recruiting/Scholarship question

For those who are up on this topic, my question is this. It appears we only have one scholarship left for 2016. If one or two current roster players on scholarship leave, does that open up more scholarships for 2016? I honestly do not know so was curious about the correct answer. Thanks in advance.

We have commits from 24 players. There is a rule that you can only sign 25 in a given class. That leaves us 1 more that can commit (plus if any de-commit, we would replace them). There are ways around this 25 limit. One if for a player to enroll early (when classes start in Jan) but none of this class intend to do that so no additional room there. The other way is for a player to enroll late, which usually means the following Jan but he has to pay his own way for the first semester (gray shirt). If we sign more than the 1 allowed, we would have to gray shirt someone. Most players don't like that choice and will usually only do that if they have no other options.

The rule that applies to the team size is that there can only be 85 on scholarship when practice starts. We currently have 86 and will get to 87 with the 1 more recruit above. We will need to have at least 2 players leave due to "attrition" to get down to 85. If more than 2 leave, we would have available scholarships but could not sign any incoming freshman. Therefore, those spots usually go to walk-ons for the year.

All true, however schools are allowed to over sign by 3 each year. Like you said if coaching staffs know of players leaving, etc, they will then over sign by that 3. Iowa had already lost T. Harris and I wouldn't doubt Mick Ellis leaves if he loses spring comp at kicker and/or punter, among other possible transfers. Players will transfer, seniors will decide To graduate as opposed to playing a 5th year, options all around. Iowa loses guys nearly every spring after spring ball/spring semester.

My guess is Iowa signs 25-27 guys this class.

I could be wrong but I believe you can still only bring in 25 new guys per year. So, if you over sign you are hoping one of the players enrolls early which counts against the previous years class, someone is willing to greyshirt, which then won't count until the following class, or is banking on someone they signed not actually qualifying or making it in. You can't actually bring in more than 25 guys in any one class.

Nope, can most defiantly bring in a maximum over sign of 3.

I know it's wiki but it quotesactual ncaa by laws. Obviously there are rules for the over signing but it does happen.

Ole miss and the SEC are famous for it.

One of those, 2011, actually brought in 29 new guys, JUCOs help and help in different classes however, these two classes are only 2 years apart and account for 56 guys. Technically "new" guys, regardless of class. Ways around the "limits". It's obviously up to each school to get to the 85 limit, however, many schools employ creaning principles. Iowa does not, which is why assume they know more guys will be departing, allowing them to oversign yet be under 85 limit.

Big Tens own Michigan: 27 with what appears to be no JUCOs.

Also, Oversigning is used for the 85 limit. So even if some are used for other classes via JUCO or early enrollee they obviously still count towards the overall total

Now where in the article does it say that you can bring in more than 25 players. It says you can over sign by up to 3. And the list of recruits just show how many players the schools signed, not how many they actually brought in or made it in for that particular year.

I am still fairly certain (although I admit I am no expert) that you can only actually bring in 25 kids per class.

If I read it correctly if you have 25 spots and can explain how you will stay at 85 you could sign 28,

Doesn't the 85 limit only really matter once Aug rolls around since the incoming guys won't be on scholarship yet? How would you be able to explain how you are going to get to the 85 limit if you over sign in Feb? You could be right though. Like I said, I am no expert but that was just always my understanding.

There are players that they would expect to transfer, not make grades, not return from an injury, graduate and not take the 5 th year etc. I would guess it's a paperwork shell game in some regards.
