I am not bashing. But what I am tired of is "now Brands has stepped up and understands what he needs." So what, he wasn't recruiting the best wrestlers nationwide before? Bullshit. Evans, Telford, Scon, etc. Stop telling me cause we got Lee, Bull and Young we now know how to recruit. That is crap. Jesus not football. Only so many good recruits in wrestling. So stop with the now our coaches woke up to recruit East Coast. We have been. Just not getting the best period.

Without doing a ton of research, I don't think it is false to say we targeted the very high end guys more than in the past and have had more success (though the Teasdale loss hurts this). Fewer top 20-50 types and more 5-10 types. With Teasdale and perhaps even without, I believe we were going to have more top 10 p4p guys than we've had in a long time. I suppose it depends on the service but I think the only top 10 p4p guy you mentioned is Evans.

I agree not my point. I just can't believe we weren't trying for all the top guys for all the years. Just don't tell me we are "recruiting different" cause we got Lee and formerly Teasdale. The top wrestlers everyone knows. Need to close. Point is stop telling me we are recruiting different. We know the top wrestlers.

Before Kemerer, Evans was the only top 10 guy. Once you get past top ten, talent drops off. 2012 was the last year the top ten was crappy. 2013,2014,2015 have been nails. 2015...8/10 were AA's as RS Freshman with two champs.

It's not just Lee but we got Marinelli, Warner, Kemerer.

I think the belief, and perhaps this has even been confirmed, is that the prior philosophy was to spread the scholarships out a little more and land (for instance) 5-6 very good recruits versus taking that same amount of scholarship money and getting 3 top notch recruits instead. If you look at the run of Kemerer, Lee, Warner, Teasdale, Marinelli vs prior classes the proof might be there to support that.

You can't equate wrestling recruiting with football recruiting. All football scholarships are full rides while wrestling scholarships are more resource allocation and the amount offered, what can be earned at camps, etc.

Maybe this has been a waste of my time. Given your responses your mind seems made up and you don't seem interested in another POV.

Hey if you or anyone else can figure out how Cael is doing it please let Tom know. It seems the numbers don't add up and it is a big mystery. That's why only 9.9 scholarships are available for college wrestling programs. So teams can't load up on all the studs like Penn St. is currently doing. It's worked for the most part until now for some reason.

Maybe someone should look into this?

Is everyone seeing one of the problems here? Iowa has been forced to try and get the elite wrestling talent in the country to travel several hundred miles to the Midwest and leave family and friends behind. In many cases the kids don't want to leave their comfort zone.

The lack of top end p4p kids in the State of Iowa is killing the Hawks chances of returning to the top of the heap. Having one kid in Iowa be top ten every 4-5 years won't cut it.

To me, the biggest problem with the GT decommit is the timing. JRent and/or Mejia might have beed salvaged if this shit had happened last fall.

I look at the PSU situation and wonder how as well, maybe jealously so. People talk about the ROTC avenues, stuff that I had never heard of so I have no opinion there.

I will say this. There were similar talks in the 80's and 90's with the loaded Gable teams. Now I know, there were a couple more schollys back then, but people still wondered. The consensus answer we always heard, was that kids(and their families) were willing to sacrifice scholarship money from other schools to have the chance to wrestle for Gable(for less and sometimes as straight up walk ons)

I really think that is what we are seeing here. A chance to wrestle with their idol. And for someone, who at least in their opinion, is the best coach out there.

IMHO

Can we still go after Renteria or Mejia? I know the committed elsewhere but they haven't signed have they?

They have signed, which is part of the reason that losing Teasdale hurts so much. His pseudo-commitment caused us to lose both of these great wrestlers that wanted to be Hawks.

From his days of coaching @ ISU and the repeated bitch-slappings he took from Iowa, I'm sure Carl does as much as he can to do to somehow negatively affect the Iowa program.

We'll see what eventually happens and how TnT adapt.

Spooner - my mind not made up in the least. I just get frustrated sometimes. And the focus on a couple studs to go all in on instead of spreading money around to 5-6 guys seems to be a change in philosophy and if so I stand totally corrected. I guess some people made it sound like our coaches woke up 1 day and said we better leave the Midwest to get some studs. And they have with Kem, Bull, Young and Lee. My point was they did that before with guys like Evans and Telford and Baldy and Skon so didn't seem to be a new recruiting change on that front. Thanks to Chief and Spooner for correcting me where I was wrong.
