I'm loving the redshirt rule introduced this season. A player can play in 4 games and still redshirt. The count so far according to Leistikow:

Running back Henry Geil (two games), receiver Nico Ragaini (two), safety Kaevon Merriweather (two), defensive tackle Tyler Linderbaum (one), linebacker Dillon Doyle (one) and Tracy (one).

I suspect the ones with two games will burn their redshirt and the ones with one game are going to keep at/under the four game limit unless injuries force them into the two deeps.

I agree. It’s great football and for the students who love the game and might otherwise lose a year to an injury mid-year, etc., it’s a big positive. Also great for kids who are “next man in” but don’t get that chance until an injury in game 12 or a bowl game. Plus, some players might get a chance to get more school paid for to start or complete a grad degree.

HR is publishing a grid as well. Really good stuff:

I'm not so sure about that. Staff could be "saving" games for a player if he is needed to fill in for late season injury. Take Lindebaum for instance. He may be one that is most ready to contribute but why not hold him out until later, if an injury at DT happens with 3 games left you can plug him in and still have a redshirt year. Geil I really don't see a reason to burn his redshirt. I think they will limit him to 2 more games (unless of course he's needed for injury replacement).

I'm thinking it might have something to do with a win or loss Saturday night. Better chances we pull redshirts if we win???

I'll buy that.

I’m going to have to disagree that this Saturday will determine saving or burning redshirts. For one, I don’t think Iowa or Wisconsin is running the table with the rest of thei schedule after Saturday. Sure the winner will be in the driver seat for the West but it’s possible the West winner could be a 3 loss team.

Geil will be interesting. If IKM comes back healthy and the 3 RB's stay healthy more or less the rest of the year, then they could probably keep him no more than 4. It's a balance between protecting redshirts and having a guy ready to play if injuries occur. Hope it doesn't happen, but what if Young and IKM are unavailable in a game, Iowa is down to Sargent at that point. You need to have a second back who you can put in the game and be able to win with.

Thank you for posting the link. I'm planning to update that every Sunday or Monday during the season.

That’s why I put the last sentence in my post that is in parentheses.

I know they are just tracking freshman with this but doesn't it technically apply to any player that has not redshirted in their career? If for example, Max Cooper who played as a true freshman last year and has played in the first three games this year, did not see any further playing time the rest of the year, he could consider this a redshirt season, correct? Or for that matter, a fourth year senior could as well?

This might be a game to situationally put in Nixon. I realize the DL is deep and has done well but NIU, ISU, and UNI have all just massed their guys and steamrolled up the middle for significant yardage. Each opponent so far only tried this a couple times but I can imagine Wisky executing this with their hogs repeatedly particularly in the 4th.

I hope to see some Nixon but I have to disagree with the steamrolling up the middle part. Iowa run D is ridiculously good so far.

Thanks! Do you have any input on the guys that have some games under their belt? Is KF & co. just playing it week to week or do they have a strategy in mind?
I think KF said this week that they'll look at it closer during the bye week and decide how to proceed. My guess is that Moss and Brents continue to play and the others will probably stay at 4 games or less and redshirt unless injuries hit at their position.

Thanks. I hope we have a dominant enough season that all of our redshirts can max out their 4 games before the season is over with and still maintain the RS eligibility. I can't see how any in-game experience would hurt unless, of course, they get hurt.

This is a new facet of the program to manage in its own right. Obviously position groups with depth and performance issues like CB and WR come to mind. I agree Tracy should burn the shirt if he makes more catches in coming weeks. No need at LB or RB right now.

If KF is willing to put brents in a one score, 4th quarter game vs wiscy then he must have a lot of faith in him. Sounds like we'll be seeing quite a bit more.
